Hey guys.....long time no hear.

Well you could be hearing a lot more from me soon, as I'm on the lookout for a Disco now the chaos around my daughters birth has settled.

I'm looking for a D1 or D2 diesel, so if you know of any good ones around, let me know.

I'm looking forward to coming back to the club, and heading out for a bash with you guys again. I've really missed the fun times, and great friendships I made there.

I plan to make it down for the next meeting, regardless of whether I find a Disco by then.

I'm probably looking to spend up to $16000.

Yeah, I did love the sound and grunt of my V8, but there are very expensive to run.
Maybe I'd get a V8 if it had LPG....saved heaps with my last one.

Maybe look for a D2 for about 12-14K, put LPG on it and you'll have the best of both worlds. This may go over your budget because the conversion costs on that model are about $3.5-4K though :(

Seriously, good Disco tdi's can be had for less than $10K these days, stick some bar work and a locker and you're set. D2 td5's are getting cheaper. Good rule of thunb is to buy the best vehicle you can afford and work from there, most times you'll be happy.

Also maybe look outside of Brisbane/Gold Coast, the prices are way too dear in QLD. Sydney seem to have some of the best buys, seen a v8 D2 with about 180k on the clock in bloody good nick for about $9K a while back. You'll pay nearly double that here. Transport costs are not too bad (about $450 avg to GC/Brisbane) just a lot of buggering around that's all.

mate i picked my 98'v8 up for 10,000 on the Goldie so they are out there to be had you just need to be patient and look around.

Pending on when you bought it, but $10K for a 98 Disco V8 is waaay too much in the current market. Tdi maybe, not a V8 :)

$7-8K is more the price for a good one, for $10K it would have to be spot on for me, may I add a d2 is only $2-3K more in V8 guise and you're getting nearly twice the vehicle as well.

Yeah, I'll probably consider a V8 D2, as they are cheaper to buy, and probably chjeaper to repair as well.
The Fuel savings in a TD5 could be offset by the high purchase and maintenance costs.

The only problems with buying from interstate are not getting to check it out first, or take it for a test drive.
I'd be happy to fly and drive it back depending on how far away it is.

May I add that best to buy a 'S' spec version without ABS and SRS air bags (less crap to play up on you) which were available in the tdi's as well as the V8's.

I like the D2's but for some reason you can't get them to flex well, probably that crap watts linkage that they have on. Should have stuck with the a-frame like the D1's :)

As you can tell...I still haven't made up my mind what I'm looking for yet.....apart from the fact it will be a Disco.

mmmmm that sounds like a white one on the north side of brisbane i was looking at the other day. Was up for $17000.

There are some really cheap TD5's that come up on trading post from time to time. Seen them from $13000 up

As long as Sophie has good head control then a gentle drive should be fine....how old is she now?

May as well throw some variables into your car search equation as well since I have a modified TD5 D2. If it were me and I had my time again, I would go the D1 over the D2. But only as it would be a dedicated off road car nd not a daily driver. You have seen my D2 and although it has it's limitations in terms of flex, she goes pretty well in the rough stuff......albeit with the occasional help of that good fellow Mal at Maxi Drive;):D I have ACE, which does flex slightly better than those without, and Justin has modified my rear suspension to give me a little more flex. Although a small change in droop, it does make a difference and I still have stock brake and ABS lines.

The questions I would ask before you buy/test drive is primarily what are you going to use the car for? Is it going to be a daily driver or is it going to be a project you will keep modifying? D1 or D2 you will spend $ modifying if it is your play car but yes, generally the D2 will cost you more to run I would suggest. I however, love my D2 as it is comfortable, capable and.......well sometimes better with the devil you know:D

TD5 is not bad engine and if chipped correctly, is a great engine. Mine is a manual but I would suggest an auto in the TD5 as the auto box is better suited to the TD5 engine.

Other than that, depends on $ and how you are going to use the car. As I said before, if I had my time again I would buy a D1 as they are easier and probably cheaper to modify, but then you do sacrifice some level of interior and on road comfort IMO, so your family may wish to go newer;)

Probably confused you more now but welcome to take a look/drive of the mack truck anytime you are in the area if you want to gauge how a reasonably modified D2 TD5 goes.

Well I've been searching very hard to try and find a replacement Disco, but to no avail. Considering everyone says LR's are unreliable pieces of rubbish, they certainly seem to sell fast. 10 of the 12 Disco's I had on my list had sold before I even had the chance to see them. :mad:

I managed to test drive a 97 auto TDi today, and I have to say I was impressed with the performance......I was expecting it to be really slow, but if you put your foot down, there was plenty there. I had no trouble pulling away from traffic, and cruising on the highway in it. :eek:

So looks like I've decided to follow all your advice and stick with D1. The only problem is there are hardly any late model TDi autos around on the market. I'm just going to have to be patient I think.....which will be quite hard for me. :)

Looking forward to catching up with you all again on Thursday Night though.

You must of test driven a good one. I've driven a few tdi's and they're all gutless off the mark and that turbo lag really annoys the **** out of me. In saying thatn they have plenty of poke once the revs build up and would match the V8 in some instances without the horrenous fuel consumption.

How much were they. I would say at least the $10K mark as a start off price. Most of the cheap tdsi's have 300K plus and a bit scrappy overall but you get what you pay for (I'm just a cheap ***** that's all :D:D)

I saw a couple of Discos in nerang.

The one test drove was a 97 TDi with 168000km but no service history whatsoever. Asking price was $13000.

This one also had side steps, snorkel, and nudge bar.
ABS light didn't come on on startup though.
Also had leaky swivel hub, and snapped drive belt that was replaced while I was there.

There was another that was a 98 TDi with 160000km, and full service history. Asking price $15000.

Had no accessories.
Leaky transfer case and front diff.

Both were 7 seaters, both were silver, and both had sagging hood lining.

Nothing much else out there at the moment though. :(
