View Full Version : 245/75 16 - How they affect the Disco?

Hi All,
I am about to buy some new tyres. I have a choice of 245/70 16 All Terrains or 245/75 16 Mud Terrains.
I would prefer the Muds but am worried about the effect it will have on my Disco's gear ratios.
Does it affect the 5th gear when on the highway? If yes, how?
Thankyou,
cucinadio

Whether they are muddies or AT wont affect the gearing, it is the increase in size that will affect the gearing. The larger the tyres the harder it is for the engine to turn the tyres. In fifth gear your revs will be lower on the highway with the larger tyres, but you will find that you will not be able to carry speed through hilly sections and will have to change more regularly (if you are a manual that is).
Then it depends on if you need the muddies? If you only go offroad occasionally, then get the AT's. But if you like the rough stuff go for the muddies. Obviously the ATs will have better manners on road and will be quieter than the muddies which can get quite noisey as they wear.
What brand are you looking at? The Goodyear MTRs are a good muddy and are good on road.

Almost all D1 speedo's are 5-6 % out so fitting 245/75/16's will correct the speedo, change to gearing will be unnoticeable.

Thanks for the replies.
My Disco is a manual and is used mostly for Overland trips and not as an everyday vehicle. I also tow an offroad trailer with it.
I am thinking of going for the BF Goodrich tyres.

IMHO I think 245/75 16's are the best size choice on/off road for D1's and with pressure out the 75 aspect provides an excellent off road footprint. If you do more than 50% on road the muds noise is a pain but not your problem. BFG's are 1st rubber of many here..

I bought some s/hand 245/75 Muddies from Clarkie the naughty boy and they have been my play tires.
They do make all gears higher and you do notice it in traffic - not a problem, just different.
They WILL catch at the backs of the rear wheel arches and you will have to do a tiny bit of cutting. I thought I would get away without but learned that I was wrong!
I doubt I would ever want to go bigger. I have 225/75 ATs for normal driving and touring and they are much smoother. Muddies have a definite rumble and are MUCH more slippery in the wet. Even on dry bitumen they have nowhere near the grip. I like having both.

245/75's are fine. The speedo on mine is now dead true. ( was 5% out on stock size )
Yes you will need to trim a little off the lip under the bottom rear quarter panel - not hard seeing it is only aluminium - just use some tin snips or a hacksaw.

I've seen 265/75 on a D2 ( a 32" tyre) .. looks good and apparently no rubbing at all.
So 245/75 ( just under 31") will be sweet.

I had 245/75/16 Cooper STT's fitted to my series 1 Disco this week. I had 235/70/16 Scorpions on there before and the size difference is noticable.
The 245's really fill the guard more and have increased my overall ride height by about 20mm. It also dropped my rpm at 100klm/hr by about 150rpm.
Mine is the V8 auto and it hasnt made any noticable difference in acceleration or ride.

Nice Disco. I have the same colour. :D
I eventually decided on the 245 70 16s. Looks alot nicer than the 235's and I dont have to cut anything to make them fit.
Thanks for the advice everyone.

Shorty, nice truck!
Would advise you to trim the rear before it gets messed up - unless you never get the thing flexed ip.
Don't ask me how I know...

A dremel with fine cut off discs will do a super job. I marked my cuts with electrical tape and had to take a little more than I would have liked since I had decided to chance it. Had no problem until Shay and I did a training course at Werribee and got the axles crossed up to the stops.

Last week I fitted 245/75R16 Mickey Thompson ATZs. I haven't noticed a difference in it's driveability. She is obviously a tad higher. No increase in road noise. This new size fills the guard a little more which looks right, the 235/70 seemed a little too small.

Hi im a newbie and think this site is awesome:D, have recsently bought a 96 Disco V8i stock and I just did the same thing, after reading heaps on this website i decided to go the 245/75/16 Mickey Thompson on my 96 disco ( is that a series 1?) they seem to look good and fill the wheel arches nicely, at this stage i dont seem to even need to do any trimming but havent been off road yet. Even with the stock suspension!
But at full lock to the left the tyre is rubbing on the radius arm. Should i be concerned? it is only a slight rub:(
Exhaust is getting done on monday, from end of manifold 2.5" with resonator, she should sound even nicer than they do now. Window tint too.
Also had to bolt down my battery and when ive disconected it ive lost my radio, need the damn security code, well i ant got it:mad: Very tempted to just rip it out and whack a cd player anyway, does anyone know what to do here?
Righto off to hit a little white ball around............;)
Thanx i advance for your help and i will post some pics soon!

NJZ has done his exhaust, sounds fantastic so I reckon you'll love the change. He often gets enquiries about how he has worked the engine; gives him great pleasure to reply, nup, just the exhaust! :p Check here if you wish http://www.aulro.com/afvb/technical-chatter/48245-exhaust-shop-2.html
I persisted with my OE CD Player for 8 or so months but decided to ditch it and swap in an old Pioneer head unit I had from a few years ago. Best thing I've done, even the OE speakers sound better. Of course it sounds even better with the 12" sub and amp in the back ;)

Peter

For a CD player, go to Autobarn and get an Aerpro ISO to (insert brand here) loom to suit the brand stereo you buy, 2 mins to remove and install and for only $15.

That's a very nice looking car.
However I think the rear tyre will almost certainly foul on the rear quarter panel on full upwards articulation. The agggresive nature of those outer lugs on your tyres might cause some damage to the panel. ( deformation and splitting most likely ). I think you should consider a trim at the bottom of that panel to avoid it catching.
If you take it out and park it on an angle up on an embankment so a rear wheel sits fully up into the well, and you'll see the extent of the problem.
I could be wrong, but 245/75 BFG muds caught on mine all the time till I trimmed.
---edit oops just noticed the other guys have already pointed this out ....sorry.

hey dscoduck, mine is rubbing as well on ful left lock. It isnt too bad, its just as it goes on full lock. I havent been under it yet to see where it s rubbing. It is in getting the suspension fitted at the moment, so will check it out when I get it back.
going bush Saturday, will try to get those rear guards trimmed before I go, if I dont, then it probably wont need trimming when I get back, the guard might be 'fixed' for me.....

If the front is rubbing it will be the inside back edge of the inside wheel rubbing on the radius arms. Takes all of 2 mins to adjust the steering stops.

I figured the truck would have adjustable stops, my old crusiers had them and they were just a self tapped bolt into the housing, tanks for the tip, will get under the truck and do that this afternoon.
thanks again
