Hi all,

Getting ready for the Fraser Island comp in May in the new rig. Dollars are a little tight or rather being spent on recovery gear and getting the rig in shape. I was considering delaying the fitted UHF by purchasing the UNIDEN UH064sx handheld.

It has 2w and a reported range of 10km. It has been superceded and is pretty cheap now ($85 incl delivery).

Has anyone got any experience with this ? Is this a reasonable temporary solution or should I just spend the $400 on a fitted unit right now ? It would not be wasted because I need a replacement handheld anyway (my current is only 0.5w and is not much better than a toy).

Cheers, Steve.

2 watts is obviously going to be better than 0.5Watts. "Range" is a subjective thing and depends what is in the way, and whether you are talking to another portable or a mobile with gained antenna etc.

As with everything you get what you pay for. The cheaper units might perform as well as the more expensive ones, but may not be as robust.

Look at the ICOM portables too, we use them in the 4WD Club and for driver training etc and they get lots of abuse and stand up well.
Also look at the type of batteries they use ( Newer technology like Li-Ion, NiMH or the older Nickel Cadmium ) and whether the batteries are replaceable.

G'Day Steve

I've got one of those ... got it as a bonus when I bought the in-car unit.
very happy with it for car to car comms and sometimes more.

My wife can whisper into it quietly when I'm reversing the camper into an "approved" position..... good too for guidance in tricky 4x4 situations and recoveries. I often take it with me when away from the car so I can still hear the chatter or guide someone else. My wifes car doesn't have a UHF so on a long trip, when we're in two cars for some reason it's also been useful and cheaper than mobile calls.
I usually have it scanning all channels while off road, as an early warning for others using the same tracks (if they're talking on the UHF).
Most of those things can be acheived with the .5w unit, but things like better clarity and accessories are good with the uniden ... I use the ext speaker/mike, but gave the headset away

I don't think you'd be wasting money to get one now, and then get an in-car unit later ... you'll still use this, and prolly the other portable as well.

Batteries for them come up on fleabay every now and again for under $30.

Yep, very happy

Stevo
