Well I'm a bit miffed, I got here in '69 at about 4 & 1/2 years old. Decided I should do something about it (cos I've never been anywhere else and this is home:( ).
Then I hear I have to pass a test. I had a mate at work - a "native" - say he didn't know the answers...
Anyway, got my information booklet so I better start studying...d'you think I'll get the last 25 years worth of taxes back if I fail?? :p:p

Adam
Hi adam
Go to the government website to find out about the test and download the booklet that its all based on!
Personally I would reccomend a website called australianexam.com you pay $20 by paypal and you get 90 days to practice 15 exams with 20 questions per exam, much like the real thing you can practice as much as you like and review your answers.
I did this but I also revised from the book as I didn't know how accurate practice exams are. As in missing anything out. So I revised solidly for the last 4 days wrote and memorized important historical dates as well as practicing the exams.
Needless to say I pass with 100%.....but personally I reckon I over revised big style, but it was because I didn't know what to expect. I reckon you would get away with just practicing the exams on the website the test is not that hard.
Although there was one other person in my test room and he failed for the 2nd time and another women failed in ian's room.

TRUE STORIES from Irish Immigrants :D
When my wife got her Aussie citizenship many moons ago, they gave her a wattle plant on the day. The MC jokingly said "immigration will come around in 3 mths and if the plant is dead, you'll get deported".
She and several others (of varying nationalities) - thought he was serious.
When she got invited to her first BBQ, the invitation said "bring a plate"
She rocks up with an empty plate thinking "are they short of dishes or something?"
My mate Johhny from Cork, finished his first work day in Aus. on a building site.
They handed him a stubby and a stubby cooler.
He looked at the cooler, totally bemused, and was about to pour the contents of the stubby in it.

Come on... As much as I love landies, SMEC/THIESS dropped landies like hot potatoes as soon as they got their hands on cruisers in the late 50's. There used to be a t-shirt that one of the LR clubs had made - "which 4x4 built the snowy". A fellow LROCB member didn't like it when I pointed out that was wrong.
Now people say "opened up the snowy" as you did, which really skirts around the facts...

Get it done, being casual and procrastinating about doing it shows you are already Aussie!
The three question marks seems to indicate you are having a go back by thinking _I'm_ in the same boat.
I'm a citizen, heart and shoulder behind this country and no other.
That's why I am so Pee'd off about so many things here, and why I'm always stirring for changes lol.
I encourage anyone who has been putting it off to get it done.
I encourage any who aren't going to do it to return home:eek:

Not all countries allow dual citizenship. It will be a hard call to give up the roots even though living conditions are better on the other side. Most people are patriots and keep a strong alliance to their old country.
If dual citizenship was not allowed, wonder how many whinging Poms will give up their British passports in exchange for an Aussie one? Imagine singing "waltzing matilda" instead of "God save the queen" at the rugby!

i have had discussions with mum ( here visiting) about a friend of hers here, they came, went back, came back out with the intention of getting citizenship then going back again.
she hates the heat, the flies, the wind, the dust, the cost of living (uh? its cheaper here) and now they are selling a house they have just bought so that they can rent??? i politely asked mum to tell her to go back now as i hate the thought of poms being here and being like that giving us all a bad name..

Agree .. people who "live" year should take the country to heart and adapt to its laws and standards. I don't agree that people should give up their heritage or relinquish their ties/citizenship with their mother country (when they don't have a choice) for the privilege to live here.
Luckily most people have a choice, they can have dual citizenship or be a permanent resident.

But what about when the war breaks out ? Do you fight on the side of The Brits or Australia ?
Ok that's an unrealistic extreme example, but ultimately your loyalties have to lie somewhere.
I have a mate who has Aussie, UK and US citizenship. Talk about fence sitting !

I think that will be a very personal choice, you will get a mixed bag of responses to that question. Often people are born in a country but move to a new one at a young age. They will probably have no allegiance to their birth country.
Others who have "grown up" in a country and moved at a later stage might have different views. Some people are more patriotic than others.

We've been here for four years and acheived permanent status last July; no intentions of going anywhere except in a wooden box:D
But... I spent the first 36 years of my life in England and as such my family, old friends and 90% of my memories/experiences are all back there.
Guess you can have dual patriotism too:)
