Who do you IT people use for an ISP ?

On Whirlpool it seems Internode and TPG seem about the most popular, what about here ?

...and why do you use who you use ?
cost ? speed ? backup ? overall package ? or just that it's not Telstra ? :twisted:

About to make the jump to ADSL. :D (and I'm right at the limit in terms of distance from the exchange, so not sure how good it will be.........)

I use TGP. We are going to ADSL 2 with them.. Im happy with them.

I'm with netspace too- use a data pack when on the road and mobile as modem -works well to check email do a bit of banking/bills etc

Dial up was excellent. Alway got on first call, everytime. Never dropped out.

I have now switched to ADSL 256 Unlimited.

Cheaper than any deal from the major players.

I use iinet, but have some issues with their security system. Your password is the same for everything, and is also used as the primary identifier between you and the telephone support.

I'm reasonably sure that the iinet telephone operators aren't even vaguely interested in me, but the blatant stupidity of exposing all of their users passwords to all of their telephone people is gobsmacking.

They don't seem to have tumbled to the idea that a password is supposed to be a secret...

Duh.

I had iinet for a year when I was living in Melbourne, it worked well enough but I had a crap phone line which cost me in speed.

I don't remember having to give out my password when calling them either...

I use iinet.
No charge for upload, excellent speed on ADSL since I'm not far from exchange.
An no charge for downloads that iinet mirrors.
Great for my linux updates, as iinet are an Aussie mirror.
Also any proggies on tucows can be downloaded without affecting download limits as they are a mirror as well.

Westnet are good; I've also had good experiences with Amcom, Internode and Netspace.

I found the quality of my TPG connection suffered at peak time although the pricing was good (I reckon they oversell their bandwidth too much).

Telstra/Bigpond are bandits esp charging for uploads but every now and again have a good deal (but read the small print). Despite vowing never to deal with Telstra I actually have a good bundled deal at the moment with line rental.

I'm with TPG ADSL + 2 150 GB Plan , $69.99

Peak and Off-Peak periods apply , Uploads don't get factored in.

I went with TPG Mainly due to cost issue , once it's all set up works brilliant , I initially has an issue with the MTU ( Maximum Transmission Unit size ) with my Netcomm Router , reduced the MTU size and don't have any browsing issues.

Telstra in general offer a good reliable service But..... in general they are way more expensive than other ISP's, (and phone carriers come to that) and there help desk for ISP, (as well as land line, mobile and PDA/Data/VPN) are total crap. IMO
Just yesterday I had to call the same help desk three times for the same reason within about 30 minutes each time they said they had fixed it :mad:
What annoys me is I TOLD THEM what was wrong and how to fix it.
I call Telstra regularly through my job and every time I dial in the number it gives me the $h!ts

Actually.. it's not ancient , let's says you're on an internet plan of 12GB a Month with a certain ISP and you're speed is ADSL+2 speeds , for you to dowload a 6GB file via Torrent sites you will need to upload around app
40-50% to other Torrent users , if you're upload is counted with that ISP ( ie Telstra ) then you've already reached your 12GB limit and you will get shapped , so people searching around for internet service providers look at things like " Is upload Counted "?

i think you will find no one offers a truly unlimited connection anymore, datafast/eftel were the last tier 1 i know of that was doing it and they no longer do.

back hauling data was something that was looked for as it helped offset your data costs the more you contributed, now it matters no where near as much so they dont chase it as it doesnt a credit for them for anything so they now are starting to bill for it.

the guys that dont are offsetting by overselling their bandwith i think you will find.

sorry , I misunderstood what you "said" as apposed to what you "meant" , yes I totally agree with you , often families and friends come up and ask me if Telstra Internet plans are any good and how they compare with other service providers , because I work for Telstra.

My response is "Telstra is relatively expensive and they do count uploads ,whe shaped you're speed is reduced down to 64K etc.

I've heard that Exetel are really good, however I use Westnet. Westnet's prices are about the same as the major ISP's. I have found the service to be extremely reliable, and the customer service and tech support are excellent.
