Defender Heater Fan

Got in the fender this arvo and fired it up. Windscreen fogged up and I turned the fan to 2 and noting happened (i.e. it didn't clear) :mad:

As i headed off I could smell something burning and I'm really aware of the potential for an electrical fire so I was a bit apprehensive. :( I wiped the screen down with a cloth and suddenly realised that the fan wasn't running.:o

I turned the fan off and the smell went away, :cool:. Got home and sat in the carport with the engine off and tested the fan.

On 1 it ran ok, switched to 2 it started squealing and making a horrible noise.:eek: I turned it off and then turned it back on again and it seemed to run ok.

Has anyone had one of these out? I have the aftermarket Air Con and if it comes out through the cab then its going to be a bloody nightmare.:mad:

I suspect that the motor has had water in it and that the smell was the motor windings heating up (tho y the fuse didn't blow I'll never know).

Any help would be appreciated, I'm about to study the RAVE.:twisted:

I have the same problem, turned it on after being left in a big downpour over night, nothing happened. The fuse was cooked changed that, still nothing. Clearly water has got into the fan motor or the switch/wiring from the to the fan.

I asked here before and getting at the fan motor is a bit of a nightmare but it's the replacement cost of the fan that put it on the backburner for me. Do a search here becasue there were some clever suggestions regarding alternative blower set ups.

Mine hasn't failed but I have heard it thrashing around in water. The drain in the intake blocks and the water overflows into the fan box, I syphoned the water out and now check the intake box drain yearly.
Given that the motor is only 12 volt the water may not have done any lasting harm and the motor just needs to dry out.
Hopefully, because it would be a nightmare to remove.

Where is it removed from? Engine bay or Cab? I simply cringe at the thought of removing the Air Con :(

For some bizarre reason my fan decided to go again this afternoon:eek:. I got home and pulled the washer bottle off and opened the vent duct and sure enough the duct was full of water.:(

I drained it and fixed the drain valve and decided if rain entering the duct could stuff it (the fan) then WD 40 doing the same thing could jolly well fix it.:D

Not sure how long its going to last but its still going and gee the inside of the cab smells excelent.:BigThumb:

One question, is there a drain in the bottom of the heater box? If so I couldn't find it and of course there is no mention of it in the RAVE
