Hi Guys
ok i have now had another tyre blow out (standard michelins) and am fed up with replacing them one at a time.. so its time to replace the lot...
i have had a price for some new bridgestone dueller d694LT tyres (245 70 16's) of $229 each. (are these a common size by the way? more so than the old 235 70 16's)
are these any good, and is it a good price?
are there any tyre you would recommend (that act as per the standard michelins) that are good for road and a bit of off road work at a good price? i need them changing tomorrow as we are off to jurien at the weekend..
Perth supplier only please :)
Thanks again... hopefully this will finally end my stupid tyre questions..

Steve give the boys at West State Tyre service a call (bently) 9258 9259 they will bet that price for sure
Mine (235/85/16) muddies only cost $205 a tyre fitted
They fitted 5 tyres for me in 25min:eek:

Hi Steve you can also try Right Tyres in Joondalup a call. I have had several tyres from him and he seems OK.
Last time I hinted, (a lot) I had a price from elsewhere and he beat it.

Bridgestone, I see them a lot so they must be good, right?
I also see a lot of Ford's;)
I haven't had first hand experience of Bridgestone so can't say. Never heard of Advanta.
I have tried:
Hankook < seemed pretty good, they take a lot of punishment off road.
Nexen < also pretty good and are usually cheaper.
Goodyear < happy with them on my Falcon, never tried AT or LT's
Khumos < A bloke where I work has them on his LandLuser and has been up north a few times and he said they where petty good. They must be OK too as he's even more of a tight a$$ the me ! He does light off road to launch his boat off the beach, and that's about it.
I have had a few problems with BFG.
Thing is about tyres, they are a bit like shop assistants, you get good ones and bad but it depends on who they are serving on a particular day and how much grief you give them ! :D

Personally id say if you can afford em, go the BFG ATs.
With some pushing you can get them cheap, i got mine (albeit a little smaller 215/75R15) for 190$ EA.
They are a common tyre for a reason. Having said that, i have not tried the new duelers...

Not really up on AT tyres, but for the best prices in Perth, give Kewdale 2nd Hand Tyres a call (they MOSTLY sell NEW tyres - strange name).
I got my Maxxis Bighorns there aqnd was very happy with the price.

thanks guys...
tried the suggestions.. and the maxxis have sparked my interest apart from the size im looking for are passenger style so 6 ply and 2 ply construction.. if i go to a 245 75 16 then i can get 10/3 for a reasonable price...but put my speedo out by a long way! i need to check the bridgestones too as the ones im looking at are light truck (so should be fairly heavy duty)
how hard can it be to decide ;O)
Thanks

Would have thought for WA, most AT tyres be good seeing WA is sand 90% of places we go and occasionally muddy during winter but from viewing tyres on West Coast 4x4 vehicles mainly Patrols and Cruisers they seem to like muddies and don't seem to hinder them on beaches or dunes when lowered to around 12 to 14 psi.

G'day Steve,
I've used/use d694s in that size on a disco s1 and td5 but not in LT. They are are an excellent tyre on road and on the s1 we'll probably get 60000kms out of them. Can't comment off road though. Price is about what we paid a couple of years ago.

Goodyear MTRs:cool::cool::cool::cool:
Ive got 235/85x16 on mine.
Impressed me on the beach over new years.Went on without airing down to see how I went, infact we all did.I didnt air down to get off the beach everybody else did.
They didnt bury in like a mud tyre, just kept churning.
Goodyear dont call them a mud tyre,MTR= Maximum Traction Radial.
They wear well,Fat Faz has over 15000ks and trhey are looking good.Mine are less than 10000ks and look new still.
Around $270ea F/B

with the bridgestone remember they are the 694LT not the plain 694. they are a tougher tyre apparently... but cant really find any info at all... not even the bridgestone show it they just show a load rating of 113 and speed rating of S
the maxxis are no go as they are a 245 75 16 so 5% ish bigger in circumference and my speedo is running at very most 2% under (reading 100k's showing 98 on the gps) and thats with 235 60 16's the smaller maxxis will do but they arent as strong as the larger one as the larger is also a light truck tyre.
how hard is it to recalibrate a td5 speedo? can it be done with a nanocom? :p
i wanted to keep the budget below a grand or as close as for all 5... unless i go same size and keep a good one for spare.. oh decisions decisions!
thanks again for the info guys

Depends where and how you drive but the best tyre I've had is BF Goodridge Long trail. 80000 Kms and only 1 puncture. They are an awesome compromise in a tyre. My country is very hard going and heaps of rocks. They were around $220 each. :)

Steve,
The Bridgestone 694Lt are crap in my opinion. They went to crap when they started manufacturing them in Australia.
I have had a good run out of Cooper STT's but opinion is widely divided on these.
BFG AT or MTs are good as well.
It mostly depends on your budget, but you do generally get what you pay for. Pirellis are a good mid price, as are Hankooks. Maxxis for the cheaper end. Goodyear Wranglers are another mid-high price.

We find the STT's chip on Rocks:( They have been known to last over100000 Kms in good going how ever) The wider the tread the more the chip. You have to look at the aplication of the tyre. It's no use running a MTR on rocks or a H/T in Mud. It comes down to a compromise. Unless you have 2 sets of tyres.

I put K-Mart Kumhos on the Range Rover and they lasted about 115,000km before one of the tyres developed a bubble and I replaced the set. Shame, as I reckon I could have got another 6 months out of them. I was running 215/85R16, and couldn't get the same size / pattern again, so changed brands. They did some rough 4WDing, but for the most part covered road kms.

Thanks Craig, but i dont think the size im after are made here (not according to the leaflet, some are some arent) i am seeing very mixed reveiws on the d694 but nothing on the LT version.. have you got first hand experience with them then? BFG's are going to push my budget a bit too much i think.. im getting quoted 280+ for them..
one reason for going with them is the tyre place is next door to work, so i dont have to take time off to get it done... and i have to get it done today as we are off to jurien bay tomorrow!
Brad..
Yes we will pop up to see you.. we wont have a radio or anything tho.. (something else to sort out!) so do you have a location where you will be or is it easy to find?
Michael
Thanks for the info, i have heard good and bad about the kuhmo tyres but the consistent thing is that they bubble, and for the small difference in cost i'd rather not have a bubbling tyre, sounds like you got a damn good set tho!
thanks again guys...

Last week I fitted Mickey Thompson LT245/75R16 to my D2 replacing the Michelin XPC 235/70R16.
I am very happy with them, there has not been an increase in road noise at all. I've tried them on gravel, fast dirt and in the wet...no concerns. Haven't tried them off road yet but they are going to be my run around tyre and used for Fraser in September.
Cost was $255ea fitted, balance, alignment & new values. You may be able to do better.
In relation to speedo - mine is now showing worst case 3km/h slower than actual at 100km/h. At 60km/h, it's showing 1-2km/h slower than actual.
This doesn't concern me at all as all our speedos are out...mine now is a little over which I'm conscious of.
Just in case you can research them today...

i had the 694's on my Series 1 disco a few years ago when they first came out. i thought they were quite a good tyre, quiet on-road and good grip in the wet. on sand they were really good, the only prpblem i saw was in damp/wet sand the tread pattern liked filling up and compacting in sand a lot quicker than other tyres (such as Coopers and BFG's), but on dry sand/hills/gravel, etc i thought they were pretty good, especially for the price.

Hi 5teve
What did you choose after all your deliberating?
I have looked at my Michelins , done 75,000k, and need to replace 2 fairly soon and having a brand new one on the back not sure if I should get 4 Michelins over 6 months or 5 something else fairly soon.
I don't need a lot of mud driving capabilty as the disco is now a full time caravan pulling grey nomad vehicle .:)

Have a look at the Yokohama G012 ATS. I tow, run on sand, Pilbara tracks, etc. They are turning out to be one great AT tyre.

I have cheap maxxis road tyres on at the moment, never had a maxxis tyre on anything but a bicycle before... 10,000km so far so good
I had 2 sets of toyo open countries on an 85 jackaroo, over 200,000 km out of those. Seem to be hard to find now.

Put the same set on my D1 today, will be very interested to see how they fare off-road. Travelled 200km home on tar this arvo and was very pleased with the noise and grip. Bridgestone have a bonus 8L 12v fridge going free with each set of 694's at the moment  Wish I'd seen this thread though because I paid $1k for 4 tyres fitted, balanced and an alignment :oops2:
