I think the current winner is a guy called Monster Tjima (or something like that). He drives a v6 twin turbo vitara that apparently pumps out over 1000kw of power. They say the hardert part of the drive is getting the tyres to last!!

Actually, Ari Vatenen broke Walter's record in 1988, setting a time of 10:47.22, that is the record that stood for ages. And here is the video.

sorry Craig , i was just going with the Commentary on the video that says Quote " Walter smashed the outright record of 11:00 minutes and this record was to stand for 10 years" ?

I enjoyed watching you video of Ari Vatenen thou..thanks

Yep, just beautiful. There is also another film of Ari's records breaking run, with the entire 10mins shot from a camera down low at the front. It is poetry to watch the perfect lines and car attitude around the corners. :D

Got to love the way the Yanks tried for years to get up that hill faster, in all sorts of wierd specials, then the Europeans turned up and blew them into the weeds!!!:D:D

No worries, just to clear things up a bit, Walter actually set a time of 10:47.85, not bad for his first attempt! But apparently Walter later admitted to making several mistakes, and probably could have shaved 25 seconds off if he ever tried it again, unfortunately he never did though.

This is the quote I like the best

Audi's first attempt was also in 1985 when Michele Mouton blasted a Sport quattro to the top in a winning 11 minutes 25.39 seconds, a record then. How humiliating for the good old boys in their big super stock Chevys and Dodges, beaten by a woman!

The more I read about Walter Rohrl, the more impressed I become. He was two times World Rally Champion, competed in the Le Mans 24 hours and various road racing events. Niki Lauda is quoted as saying he is a genius on wheels!

Found this interesting quote:

Walter Röhrl - head test driver at Porsche AG - is driving a Ferrari 599GTB on the Nürburgring (Germany) for evaluation. He’s driving along “swiftly” and notices he’s slowly catching up with another well driven car up ahead. … He gets closer and closer… And he notices it’s another 599GTB! … Now he’s at the other Ferrari’s bumper and when it’s driver makes an error, Röhrl takes him on the inside. … A bit later, in the paddock, the other car stops next to Röhrl’s. The driver lowers his windows and shouts: “LUNATIC!!!”

Well… Apparantly M. Schumacher can be a bit of a bad loser sometimes.

In his defence, he was beaten by the ‘ring Master’! At 60, Walter still has what it takes to set dazzling times on the clock and to make a car dance.
