Looking to upgrade the Disco I and have narrowed the search down to 2 vehicles. '98 RR P38A on LPG, and a 2001 Td5 Disco. Considering accessories (bullbar, snorkel etc) the cost is about the same. Both very low mileage.
We're planning to take the 'new' vehicle across the Simpson later this year and Cape York next year.
I had an earlier RR on LPG and experienced with the usual issues. But my current '96 auto Disco is on LPG and gives me diesel economy, with V8 power and no real problems.

We've racked up a few,000km in the outback and know the issues with LPG supplies (which isn't as bad as some might expect). More concerned with the vehicles' strengths and weaknesses.

Here's how I see the balance.
RR - Pro's; Luxury ride. V8 power, LPG economy even at high speeds. Con's; Electronics not happy underwater, evidently suspension can shut down when wet. LPG not good for towing, would need to revert to ULP.
Disco - Pro's; Diesel economy. Reliable. Good for towing. Cons; Max cruising speed 90kph before losing economy.

What are your thoughts? Which truck would you want under you up at the Cape?

You want advice on buying a vehicle but your not providing much information on your needs

how many people you carrying
you towing a caravan or camper
what you carrying as on board gear
how much long distance travel vs city cruising you intend doing
is the vehicle required to be daily traveller

If it came down to Cape York trip and Simpson Trip then one got to go for the Diesel vehicle

Based on AULRO comments both P38 and Td have issues that can be expensive for owner regardless of service maintenance record

It comes down to what do you really like to own and drive and what are you prepared to pay for the joy of ownership both P38 and Discovery will do whats required of it off road.

If stuck flip a coin

If a betting man go the Tdi as giving you less worries in long run

This is an easy one to answer. Keep the D1.

As you said, it hasn't got any probs, and its resale $$ are very low. The D1 V8 is a very simple and robust vehicle, just fit some sill tanks for fuel mileage, Or a longranger 150litre and a torroidal gas tank in the cargo area.
Much cheaper than buying either of the aforementioned- electronically driven -overly complex- irrepairable in the outback vehicles!

Just my 30 cents worth there.:)

None of them, Keep the D1. You will jump out or the frying pan into the fire.
Or get a Defender. You cant beat simplicity on Touring.:D

Keep the d1 i must agree.

But if your thinking of those other 2 I'd go the td5 disco. Simply because of reliability.
