This was discussed some time ago on this site - but now RH drive vehicles in England are having this problem (driveshaft rod smacking hole in sump )
LR finally admits there's a problem with the 2.4 defender - LR4x4 - The Land Rover Forum (http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php'showtopic=23204)
and more ...
Defender2 - View topic - Sump problem! (http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic222.html)
I've had a look at mine and there are no indents or marks on my sump pan, but..
Do you think I should ask Austral to change my sump pan just in case? :(

Keep a pack of that 2-part epoxy putty in the cab and worry about it if-and-when.
Cheers

No, no RHD ones have had this happen, yet. Read the thread and linked thread.
But it has happened to RH drive vehicles - see post #29 in the first thread, paraphrased here...
My dealer has just had an 07 Defender in with a hole punched in the sump. The customer kept driving with the oil light on until the engine seized. blink.gif I've sent them a copy of the technical bulletin and will be getting mine changed at the next service...

If it has been raised in a technical bulletin your dealer should change it no questions asked. I doubt they will have stock of the new pan.

So Far a few dealers which I have spoken to do not nor does any one in the country so they seem to be shipping them in from what I understand.

from what we have heard it has been raised as a general bulletin... We are going to ask them to change ours on the first service.

Hello dullbird - there are extra replies in the first thread I posted - to the effect that LR will not warranty the new sump pan until the old one is damaged. That is also what Austral have told me - great - bring on the big lap.
Here is the Technical Bulletin issued by LR...

Doing a bit of internet searching I can up with this TSB.
Seems like some are getting replaced, don't have to wait for the banging/hole.
I would put more pressure on LRA/dealer to replace at next service as it is being done elsewhere.

If only mine was a military vehicle in France and Pakistan. :(

Get it dirty then give it a tap with a piece of pipe (similar diameter to the prop shaft). Bob's your uncle. :wasntme:

Rock damage is not covered by warranty.

Trivetts at paramatta in sydney. They are all cheap jerks but I just told them that the bulletin said damage could happen if I was doing serious 4wding and I plan on doing that so they need to change it.
And the response was when it comes in for first service we will change it then, no hassle just need to order the **** in.

They will, provided the vehicle is under warranty.

XavierNot too sure about the cheap jerks comment but unfortunately, being a Land Rover dealer, Trivetts are somewhat restricted in what can be & can't be replaced.
If the bulletin was a Service Action, then the part would be replaced straight away.
Unfortunately, it's just a Technical Bulletin at the moment & therefore the sump is only to be replaced when it needs to be.
I know this isn't helping your cause which is why Ian has spoken with me. As I know what sort of driving you do & will be doing, I advised Ian that it would be prudent to have your sump replaced on your next visit here. The part is only worth $100 or so & it would be good insurance to replace it before anything did happen.
The same applies to Dullbird/Muddymech too.

I'm not sure our members realise JUST HOW LUCKY we are to have people like Scouse and Bigjon as regular LONG TIME contributers to this site.
Its easy to generalise about occupations,, but its NOT something we do here.
If you have a problem with Trivets,, TALK to Trivets!
If this was my forum I'd:rocket::rocket::soapbox::rulez:

Thanks for the info, Scouse - this is in essence what Austral here in Brisbane have told me too. They are trying to accommodate me with this issue, but if worse comes to worst I'll just buy the part.

Yes probably over the top saying cheap jerks but my point is that it is a cheap part and it should be changed. Defenders are purchased with the idea of doing some 4wding in and not as a shopping trolley. I would much prefer not to have it punctured in the bush where I can't get help or a decent repair or on it.
I appreciate the help Scott.

For piece of mind, has anyone maxed out the articulation and seen if it hits anywhere? Thats the first thing i'd be doing. I mean seriously maxed out, like park 1 front wheel on a forklift, and lift the tines until the back wheel is 6 inches in the air. If nothing comes close to touching your little diesel sump, you haven't got a thing to worry about.

Mate - I've done some full on 4 wheel driving - over all sorts of terrain - with some cross axle driving - and have not got any witness marks - but the point is - what if I do have a problem somewhere remote - I'm traveling around the country in May and will be remote.
Have you got a spare forklift you can bring over? :p

Well - good news - Austral have agreed to replace my sump pan under warranty. :clap2: Thanks Scott for your advice with this ;) - and one thing to be remembered is that being honest and polite with your LR dealer can get you a good result - they do try to help out. :)
