18" wheels on discos - offroad?

Most of the better condition facelift DiscoII's in Perth for sale are either Classic Town's or SE's, which have the 255/55 R18 wheels. They look pretty hot and given most of my driving is blacktop that's great.

Now i take my cars off-road only a couple of times a year and 99% it's just down onto a beach like Whitehills and Coral Bay, not heavy sand, normally just drop R16 tyres down to 20psi and no probs.

Are the 255/55 R18's going to be okay for sand work, do they deflate okay with a reasonable balloon?

Or am I going to have to hold out for one with the R16's fitted? (i don't want to buy a second set of rims/tyres for the few times a year i go offroad.

I am sure if you only go offroad a couple of times a year onto sand the 18s will be fine.

thanks for that, i just went through the quokka (trading post like) and there's at least 5 or 6 sets of steel disco rims for $50-100 the set, and a few with 90-95% tread on AT tyres for the $500-600 mark, so might be worth buying a 2nd set.

Thats pretty cheap, you want to make sure they're not for the D1, D2's are a differant stud pattern and normally cost a bit more.

edit - and how dumb is that, changing stud patterns on the series...

i had the same concerns but i just bought a set of 265/65/18 bfg and now no more worries about airing down

can you get BFG A/T's in that size? how much roughly were they?

when you say no worries about airing down, you mean you don't need to air down, or that they do air down ok?

My DII is fitted with 18" wheels and with the exception of bottoming out I have had no problem in the sand.

I bought my D2 with 18"rims and it went some pretty interesting places on the stock rims & rubber. I would suggest save your money if you only intend to go off road a few times a year and if only on sand then (let the debate begin;)) I would say your stock tyres are fine/better than ats/muds.
