Hot rod builder Boyd Coddington has died age 63.
Boyd Coddington: Boyd Coddington, Hot Rod King, Dead At Age 63 (http://jalopnik.com/361391/boyd-coddington-hot-rod-king-dead-at-age-63)
If you've watched his show "american hot rod" you may know of his ill-temper, but he's still built some incredible machines.

sad thing to of happened but he was an idiot .... if he'd talked to me like he did his workers I would of knocked them teeth right out of his head . and it was his workers that made the cars not him . he was just a fat git who sat in his office cramming donuts :D:p

Thats not good at all, i enjoyed the show, and the cars he built. I reckon Boyd would have lost more staff to Foose had he of sacked that **** clown Dwayne, he was the problem, sure he worked hard and was reliable but he was the reason people didnt want to come to work all the time.
A big loss to the car community.

Had some pretty amazing vehicles and some excellent tradesmen, but you would never want to work in that sort of environment - all night marathons, no weekends off and far to short project deadlines.
The amount of angst in the place was through the roof, any wonder Chip Foose and Charlie* etc walked.
Diana
* Charlie seemed much happier in his cameo appearence working with Chip on "Overhaulin"

He didn't always have a large workshop and a troop of workers. He built that all himself, and a lot of fantastic cars by himself too. He did appear a bit of an ass on the show though.

That's a sad loss to the hot-rod community and custom car scene in general.
I quite liked the bloke from what I saw of him on the show. As mentioned above, Dwayne was the biggest problem with regard to the mis-treatment of staff and the walk-outs by key team members.
RIP Boyd.

I never really saw an issue with Boyd himself, but he let Dwayne walk all over him, and the deadlines he set were stupid. For a family man after a while it would be the job or the family. If you worked there you would never see your family

No doubt mate. he had to work his way up . but if you look some other shows the boss is still out helping even if it is just to hold a panel or a bolt ..... boyd would stand back and watch and then get Dwayne to jump up and down to get the project finished yesterday ...... I'd like to smack Dwayne as well :p
as a man on his own he was probably a great bloke but as a boss he was less than average .... and they do build some awesome cars :)

I would be more than happy for either Boyd or Foose to come out and restore my SS Torana for me.
Like him or not he was on of the great Hot Rodders and Foose learnt most of what he knows from Boyd. Some of you may not be aware that Foose and Boyd used to be real closes and Foose was Boyds protoge.
RIP Boyd.

I loved it the other night when he cracked it at the French chef... the British and French go a long way back, and it looks like they have a long way to go:D. It was arguably the best application of the p, f, c, and w words in a very long time.

That's interesting because Chip credits his father (also a hot rod builder) for a lot of his skills, and most importantly for developing Chip's love of cars particularly hot rods.

The Boyd Foose thing is true though, Foose learnt alot of his skills working for boyd until the relationship went sour for some reason, hence Boyd getting so upset loosing employees to Chip. I dont blame Charlie and Mike for leaving, i couldnt work with dwayne.

Not wanting to speak ill of the dead, but Boyd was pretty full of himself. Chip Foose probably went to Coddington to learn from the acknowledged master. You can only learn so much from your dad and you need to see other perspectives.
What master tradesman expects that his apprentice won't go out on his own, only an egoist, who knew what a tallent Chip Foose was and is. However from Coddington's perspective, he was losing that tallent and his cars would be that much less for the loss of Chip.
I do not understand why Boyd wouldn't allow Charlie to go and do that one special car with Chip and return. It all comes down to ego.

Well said, had i of been boyd i would have considered it a good thing that Chip Foose wanted to source tallent from my workshop, yet over some petty bull**** he lost probably one of the best panel beater/painters in the business.

Yes, that all good and true. But he went to work for Boyd as a young fella and was Boyds head buider for a number of year. Not sure how deep the fued went or wether most of it was hype. I know that Boyd did regard him as family. I sincerely believe the grumpy, difficult tyrant character may have been mostly a put on for TV.;)
Chip comes across as a really nice guy and Boyd as a grumpy old bugger, but thats TV. None of us will ever really know what he was really like.
I still have the upmost respect for his work and ideas as I do with Chips.
Now Overhaulin Australia with Chip and the crew doing up my SS, Id like to see that.

It was believed that there may have been a feud over alledged fraudulent activities. Can not be confiremed.
Another snippet Jesse James was also a builder for Boyd. I believe about similar times to Foose.
There is also a bit of a dispute over who really designed Cadzilla for Billy Gibbons, wether it was Boyds or Chips creation. At the end of the day it came from Coddingtons shop.
Talented man all the same.

Rod it yes, restore it no. I wouldn't let any of those clowns near a rare classic car.
I was disgusted the day they rodded that green vintage ute that had been restored to original (can't remember what it was, but I think it was a Ford). Faithfully restored and rare as all ****, but it was just an easy build to him. He was determined to build this rod in an impossible time frame and did. (don't remember his name - looks like Cletus).

I believe that would be Mike, the one who was sacked for designing wheels for chip on boyds time. he looks like Cletus because he was in a bad smash with Boyds son on the salt lakes or somewhere similar.

sorry mate, that wasnt my intention, i just added the last bit cause if you dont know why he talks and looks like that its a bit strange. He did talk about it on one of the episodes, apparently he and boyds son were testing some car out and lost control, Mike did alot of damage to his face in the accident and barely survived, i am not sure boyds son was so lucky

Now theres a man who created his own end. He set unrealistic deadlines on his projects creating his own super stress levels add that to a poor diet and obesity and pop goes your heart.
I would be very surprised to hear he didnt die of heart failure.
He has left us with some very nice cars although I wonder how some of them will look a few years down the track.
