got the tyres... now what pressure....

Hi guys....

i went for the easy and quick option... some 245 70 16 D694 light truck version bridgestones.. worked out at a little over $200 each. they are a new design tyre with consistant tread depth and look pretty nice. hopefully they will be!

question is what pressure do you guys run at? the tyre place has whacked 38 front and rear but the book says 38 rear 28 front... so what is it?

cant beleive that i have 3 real good tyres off the old ones.. one with only a thousand k's on and on getting them home notice that have wrecked all but the worst one.. huge gouges out of the sidewalls.... very irritated as i wanted them to hand around on here... will be having words...

Hey Steve,

I have LT245/75 X16 Pirelli Scorpions, and I run 40psi front and rear, unless loaded for touring, then it is 42 front and 46 rear.

Obviously I run different pressures offroad.

The tyres have done 107,000 Kms so far and there is still a little bit more in them. The treads look fine and don't look like they have run over or under inflated.

the 40 front and rear were reccomended by the Bob Jane store when they fitted them.

I still dont get it tyre placards saying different rates front to rear :mad:
I run 40 psi all round and get great even wear on MTRs 50,000 kays and Ive only lost 3mm of tread
36 to 38 all round will give good wear
If you run different tyre pressures front to rear 28 to 36 the car will pitch into corners as the fronts will be way to soft
I always have the same pressures all round unless loaded for a trip then the rears get 6 to 8 more psi than the front
It also pays in summer if driving for long periods to check pressures every couple of hours as the road temp increases tyre pressure sometimes dramatically so

32 front 36 rear always have done in my rangie no matter what tyres I have on. Always a comphy ride,soft and supple. I mostly get around 90 to 100k out of a set if I dont damage them offroad. Been doing this since my first Rangie way back in 1985.

I remember a post not so long back about the 4psi rule.

Its something like check your cold tyre pressure and run them till warm, if the PSI has increased more than 4psi the pressure is too high.
If it's less than 4psi, it's too low.
At least I think that's right someone will pipe up and correct me if I'm wrong.

The will get you close enough to within a couple of psi but it will vary depending vehicle load etc You should get close enough though.

thanks guys sounds like 38 should be about ok... steering has lightened up no end tho!

will crank the back up later once i have loaded up.. and sounds like that 4psi check is a good one! i'll see if i can find more info.. i guess i'll need to air down for stockyard gulley now tho ;)

36-38 psi front and rear .. Disco 1 on 245/75
I find anything higher just too hard and bouncy.
Off seal I put them down to 30-32 ( if i can be bothered ) ...centre diff lock always in.
Harder stuff/sand down between 25-30.
Real hard stuff- whatever it takes to get out without rolling them off the rims :)

I run 32 front and 40 rear unladen and 34 front and 46 rear laden, i run them just over what the tyre placard says.

Took me a little while to get these pressures, more trial and error over a period of time of trying differant pressures and doing a trip, basicly running what the tyre placard says then adjusting 2 psi up every trip then down every trip until i got the best setup, for me this is where it handles the best.
