You can't link images off your hard drive. You need to first upload it to a site like photobucket, flickr, picasa web album or your ISP's web space

Land Rover lost the Australian market to Toyota by LR's refusal to produce a vehicle that had a decent highway cruising speed, by their refusal to fix glaring faults, and by their paternal pommie arrogance in refusing to even admit there were problems, or areas requiring simple improvement, or refusing to acknowledge that colonials might even have some idea what was wrong.

This attitude of "we make what we can make, or want to make, and you have to sell it even if the customers don't want it" was what sunk the British motor cycle industry first, then the truck industry, followed by most of their car industry.

All emotions and rot aside, its an excellent vehicle.

It comes in a range of colours and accessories, and all doors actually open when on display.

It also has an engine with power and torque outputs we wouldn't mind:).

Credit where it is due - it might not be everyone's cup of tea but it does what its been developed to do:o.

MAKE NO MISTAKE THOUGH - the 200 series is an abomination and shall surely be put to death!

I drove the twin turbo V8 diesel version last week. It may look weird but to drive one is fantastic. Only took it on bitumen suburban roads but it has refinement and power in bucket loads. I assume a D3 would be similar but I've never driven one.
Not a fan of the seats though. Very flat and you slide around in it when cornering. Steering felt disconnected from the wheels due to its smoothness. No feedback feel. Other than that it was awesome.
Would love to see a 200 Series and D3 off road comparison.

Another big selling point for toyota is it had John Laws behind it . Flogging it like a dead horse .Plus i don't think land rover advertise nowhere as much as toyota does on the TV . what land rover needs is a young advertising group to make adds like the pajero adds and pathfinder adds. land rover is a bit lame in this department ;):).

Land Rover has that ad on tv at the moment which is selling the Discovery as 3 cars in one. Very upmarket looking.
Don't think I've seen an ad for the Freelander, Range Rover or Defender.

Yes there was a Range Rover sport one a while back, mostly the RRS in glamour bling bling urban poses. - but hey - if Land Rover enthusiasts can't remember it it was pretty ineffectual wasn't it?

Land Rover all over - LRA probably doesn't realise that Land Rovers can go everywhere and not just St Ives, Tookak and the snowfields.

I don't get it, I read the thread and I'm meant to believe the v8 diesel in the toyo 70 series is the reason we see less landrovers on the road? Toyota doesn't give anyone 'what they want' - their marketing department tells you what you want and joe bloggs believes it. That is a marketing guys job, and Toyota's blokes do it well.

I might be wrong, but I would think the 70 series v8 diesel would be the lowest selling of all the toyota 4x4's to the public... there are certainly plenty of others to choose from: the rav4 (6 4x4 variants), the kluger (3 4x4 variants), the hilux (5 4x4 variants), the prado (5 variants), the landcruiser 200 series (3 variants), the 70 series (7 variants) so I really cannot believe the v8 diesel hurts land rover sales much at all.

What hurts land rover is a lack of marketing, a lack of being in the public eye and a lack of respectful commentry in the media. Despite this, Land rover sells plenty of discos, plenty of range rovers and plenty of freelander 2's. The defender is an icon for the brand but lets face facts, it is an enthusiast's vehicle, not joe bloggs choice of everyday transport. Despite this, current production cannot keep up with demand, so why would you promote it? to increase the backlog of ****ed off customers waiting 6 months for a vehicle?

Lastly, what am I meant to see in those photos that I couldn't see in a new Defender 110? stickers that say V8? It looks like what it is - a 20+ year old design rehashed to fatten toyota coffers at a bargain development price, in summary, it looks bland, souless and boring.

Well, this summary came from a Nissan driver neighbour of mine yesterday :

"If I won lotto, the only 4WD on the market would be a 130 DC Defender."

He summerised the V8 Cruiser Vs Defender with :

Best Articulation - The Defender
Lowest Cost - The Defender
Most Economical - The Defender
RPM at 100kph - <2000 for the Defender, 2300 for the V8 Cruiser
Best low range Climbing - The Defender

apparently some of the 4WD mags are saying nice things about Land Rovers lately. I haven't read any for awhile, but there you go, they're shaping peoples opinions.

I had trouble understanding that as well but I assume it is something to do with clean clear water (posts) and life being a bit muddy. The Yarra River is said to flow upside down, mud on top or something like that.

The thing that puts me off the troopy station wagon (apart from the obvious) is the lack of the second fuel tank that the other traditional models have. I assume it has something to do with the seat configuration, but has anybody managed to put a second tank in one. That's a big negative in my view.

There must be a reason why armies around the world have and still use Landrovers. Toyota, Mitsubishi and Nissan owners think only locally (Australia) when comparing the popularity of these vehicles. I’m sure sales of the V8 diesel in Europe will be limited.

Check out the new 76 series Landcruiser, new 4.5L diesel in a retro design, apparently parts of the market wanted this. For around $60,000 your accessories are limited to diff locks front and rear.

Let’s not forget Japans “design copying” since the 1960’s.

Well, if you go to a showroom to buy a Defender, and are told you can have white only and have to wait until July, AFTER THE PRICE INCREASE, as I was yesterday, it is no ******g wonder they only sell 100 a year!

They are lucky to sell that many. There are obviously 100 very patient, forgiving Australians

As far as I am aware, LR Australia are selling / have sold all of their allocated stocks of Defenders. They can't dictate to LR UK as to what they get, merely make suggestions as to what they would like. If your Dealer can't sell you one, I am sure it is because they can't get one to sell to you. All Dealers like to sell cars, it is part of how they make money!

Good point. So poor sales can be partially attributed to "Clowns" selling a good product.

Obviously they set a high target. Perhaps their thinking went something like this :

Hmm. Let's see, the competition sell 14,000 similar vehicles per annum. Lets set a sales target of 50.

100% of stock moved in 10% of the allocated time - oh goody, now I get a bonus.

Price increase .. WHA?

The brochure I have, from memory, says $49,990 for a 110, and $50,990 for 130 cc. And that was two weeks ago.
I got another one from the Melbourne motor show Saturday, I cannot recall what the price it had though.

also, the bloke i spoke to said that it would take a couple of months to get a new 110 into the country, unless you want white (i do) and the dealer can do a swap with another dealership.

Maybe they said "How many draughty, leaky, poorly assembled, uncomfortable, slow, noisy Defenders have we been selling? Not many hmm... Maybe we only need to order a few in for those of questionable mental agility that will want a new one."

Then when they are all sold "Hell, lets get more of these things in, they sell pretty well (on the phone to UK "Get us more... what do you mean we can't have any more?... They are selling well everywhere else? Oh well, we will just have to wait").

Maybe because of their inept after sales service and do not wish to employ extra people to their call centre, they keep the imports down

Less cars sold = Less complaints

3rd March 2008, 03:27 PM
You folks have got it in one - they just don't have the facilities to make enough LR's for the demand...

BUT they don't make enough for be able to build more factories to be able to build more vehicles.....

Australia gets its allocation and that's it, when that allocation is sold well "I'm sorry you'll have to wait".

Why would LRA spend a fortune on marketing when they know they'll run out of stock in a month? All that would do is give them an even worse reputation (hard to believe, I know).

Would be better if they went back to CKD form and we put them together over here - might be able to pump out more vehicles at least and hey there's a nice Mitsubishi factory down south that will have some spare capacity shortly :cool:
