View Full Version : Am I now required to defend my choice of vehicle?

1st March 2008, 02:42 PM
Today I found my way through a swanky showroom filled with Peugeots, Jaguars, Volvos and finally at the furthest end found a few Land Rovers of the popular variety and none of the unfashionable variety.
Not being of sound mind, I paid the man a deposit on a new Fender. To add to my fragile psyche I will have to endure countless days and nights until she arrives (mid July).
I haven't let the encumbent english mistress know that she will be tossed aside and her value spent on accessories.
Have I come to the right place for solace and sympathy?

If your experience is anything like mine, the sales person make you feel like you are asking for something illegal or at the very least something indecent.
"Ahh yes, we do sell Defenders, but we don't like to talk about it in public........Could you please keep your voice down Sir. You might frighten the Range Rover customers."

sounds to me by him walking thought pergeuots etc that he went to trivetts
maybe thats where you should of gone......you said you went to the dealers in sydney, sounds like you never went to the one that seems to be selling everyone cars;)..
so anyway i never quite worked out from your whinging are you buying a new defender or not???:p:D.............come on diego put yeh hand in your wallet, dont get hung up on the dealer thing......everyone knows even if you buy a rangi sport that as soon as money is exchanged that there job is done and thy no longer care. so your not alone.
no body likes dealers do a dealer search on here, i bet you get alot of hits:eek:........and i bet they are all about peoples dealings with them
we too got treated the same way in a dealership they served everyone except us, yes its annoying but then the next time we went in we were wearing the scruffist clothes didn't wait for anyone to say can i help you sir........just walked up to desk and said yes would like to put a deposit down on a new defender please. its a good feeling and you will walk out with a smile on your face.
in he uk some dealers wont give you the time of day if you dont look like the right type of buyer as so many landrover freaks in the uk they get fed up with people coming in nicking brouchers and tyre kicking

With the city dealers these days I wouldn't mind a trip to Dungog to buy a fender. Oh but they're not in favour with LRA anymore are they?:mad:

had a similar experience when I called in to do an inspection on a disco...
why would I want a deefer or a disco wouldnt I be happier in a nissan toyota or an explorer.
as I had to walk past them all with the sales dude in tow I told him Id explain as I walked past so in my normally quiet "can you hear me over the jet turbine" speaking voice as I passed the nissan I explained that while I liked it I didnt like the uninstallable option of head gasket failures at about 120,000Km just after the warrenty expires thats fitted from the factory floor in the nissan. As we passed the toyota I commented on the inconvenience of the suspension towers cracking off of the chassis brings when offroading or on corrigated dirt roads and as we went past the ford I mentioned something about having all 4 wheels all of the time being a good thing and the optional departure of the rear wheels, while good for lightening the vehicle on turns and massively improving the decelleration times it wasnt overly helpful in the motivation department.
when we got to the rover I pointed out the benifits of a full box chassis, simple diesel engine and decent sized wheel bearings.
looking back over my shoulder I saw some customers with strange looks on their faces and salesmen doing some pretty fast talking.....
Why cant salesmen (and women) figure out that if you walk in and say "Id like a landrover please" that you know what your after, why your after it and they should just try to sell you that.....

I'd have to say that the whole experience was quite pleasant and we had a good laugh about the rivets.
Sally and I turned up looking a bit alternative: worn jeans, layers of shirts and thonged and my hair needs cutting. This kept the jagvolvopeugeot people at bay. I marched straight up to the LR salesman (a Londoner) and said I wanted one. He then took us for a drive 5 minutes away to the storage shed in a freelander to have a look at one (and only one in a crowd of a hundred vehicles awaiting delivery).
He went out of his way to help and pointed out politely that the Defender mob were a different breed.
Trivetts now only have to deliver.

You need to find a different dealer then. The Adelaide dealer has been excellent and they are keen to push Defender sales. They even have one displayed right out the front every day that I've driven past there.
Congrats one_iota - you will love it, esp with that 2 tone paint scheme!

Yes it sounds like Trivetts to me too.
I'm not hung up about it...... I've been buying Landrovers since 1972. It's just that when I buy something for full price I like to be able to pretend that I can at least the choose the colour.

Many, many years ago, a bloke I used to know quite well sold HSV's through a prominent Sydney dealer.
He told me that the other sales staff there always ignored the blokes that came in singlet and stubbies. As he said to me they were often tradies or earth moving operators, etc, had always wanted a hot V8 Holden and were now in a position to indulge, cashed up and knew exactly what they wanted and just happened to be on their way home/to another job.
He had the best sales record and the other blokes just wouldn't learn ;)

Simon,
Interesting how the thread has wandered
Photos will be a pleasure :D
Ace has offered by way of a challenge a trip to Mt Airley (a track that the Disco has done) that will be an interesting trip for comparison.
As for dealers...well if you are buying a Defender the job is easy because there is no choice or comparison. Dare I say: they sell themselves. As a spotty youth at T-rivet-ts said: "oh...you want a bullet proof one"
The Disco used to fall into that league.

Speaking as someone who has absolutely no personal experience of car salesman because I have never bought a new car, I think you are right.
My impression of Defender owners is that they went in to buy a Defender. They didn't go in to be sold something.
I get the impression that they have done their research, they know what they want and they don't need a salesman to tell them what they want.

Have to agree with you I also had a pleasent experience dealing with the same bloke.I would be happy to reccommend him as one of the few intelligent Landf Rover sales people I've come across. Unfortunately the leasing company then ordered my D3 through the Canberra mob, idiots.

G'day Tim
Name the vehicle...that's not something I have ever done: however I think that I should make an exception in this instance:
I thought that "Rivets" would be appropriate...however Sally has suggested that that is a mouthfull so I guess she'll be called "Pop" for short.
I will be having accessory dreams until mid July.

Icanardlywayt...too many sleeps to go.
Well "Pop" was my partner's idea due to the rivets but her son has started calling her the "Destroyer".....hardly appropriate in these days of anti-4wd sentiment. But given that Land Rover will be owned by Tata then maybe "Shiva" (the Hindu God of Destruction) would be an appropriate name.

Hi Baz,
The first accessory arrived from the UK 2 weeks ago- a pair of Mud Seat Rails so that I can fit my stork legs in.
The second accessory should arrive today from the UK- a Defender front fog lamp switch for the driving lights.
The third accessory should arrive tomrrow- traxide wiring upgrade and driving light combo.
The forth accessory will be the bull bar.
The fortieth will be....
You get the general idea!

Don't worry about the anti 4wd croud. They are the same annoying little buz boxes doing 60 in a 100 zone out in the country because it's scarey to drive a coke can at speed:mad:. When it's wet they are even worse.
