I should probably keep this info to myself but you guys have been helpful with letting me know what a fair price is for these things, so here's another recent benchmark.
I just bid on a 2000 4.0S with 147,000km at the auctions today. Didn't get it, and was surprised how much it went for with no logs or spare key, a coolant leak and sagging suspension, marginal tyres and no rego. Overal presentation was good, (even though a few panels had been repaired and and a great job, either) but it was starting to look knocked about inside. It also has an intermittant book symbol showing up on the climate control and the climate control wouldn't heat. The blower fan relays felt hot to touch and the yellow relay casings had a brown discoluration on the top suggesting overheating. Other stuff like brown engine oil and a cracked drive belt suggesting it hadn't been loved, but being a repo probably said that anyway.
I spent quite some time chasing its service history - it had some, but it wasn't ideal. It had 3 susp compressors in about that many years.
Anyway, bidding started at $8k with about 4 bidders and then it was between me and another bloke who looked like a dealer from about $9k on. I lost my nerve at $11k (already $1k more than I intended to pay). It went for $11,100. By the time you got it on the road and fixed the obvious problems it would've been $14.5k. Trying to sell it later with its patchy history would've been hard. It might be a $16k car on the private market today, but it was too much of a risk to save - maybe- $1500. Auctions are not always cheap.
Still looking, still want to go broke owning a P38A, although am tempted to dip into the Disco II market, there's one going for just over $15k with only 73,000km atm...
