After reading lots of opinions on what engine is the best replacement for a disco I though I would ask more specific (well i think) questions on what engine too put in a Disco. Because lets face it you can pick up a S1 Disco/Rangie v8 very cheaply these days but some of the engines are becoming old.

This is just a exercise more out of interest to see what people's OPIONIONS are ! I actually love my v8 and it still has another 100,000kms in it, but i would love a bit more power for towing and also the economy would be good too :)

Question :
What is the best replacement engine and why for a Series one disco v8 based on the following categories !

** BEST ALL ROUND ENGINE (touring/daily driver/off road/towing) **

** BEST OUTBACK TOURING ENGINE (ECONOMIC) **

** BEST HARDCORE OFFROAD ENGINE (POWER) **

** BEST TOWING ENGINE (TORQUE & ECONOMIC) **

too start the ball rolling.....

** BEST ALL ROUND ENGINE (touring/daily driver/off road/towing) **
Standard landy v8 on lpg ! Because they are pretty good standard, but does need too be on GAS.

** BEST OUTBACK TOURING ENGINE (ECONOMIC) **
A diesel, maybe a Isuzu ! or even standard TDI

** BEST HARDCORE OFFROAD ENGINE (POWER) **
Big block V8 :D

** BEST TOWING ENGINE (TORQUE & ECONOMIC) **
Isuzu again ?

Now this is a big kettle of fish and is going to be dictated by your budget and weather or not your willing to go to engineering or not and your definition of what you need it for... My td5 now does everything I need it to and then a whole heap more since its been chipped and it would be in with a gurnsy across all of them but Im assuming your after a stock "please mr parts supplier, can i have one of (insert engine description here) for my disco, thank you"

Rover engines also need to be mated to your driving style and your choice of gear box but ignoring all that....

Ive answered using only engines that are available fitted to rover as standard(Ie no holden stuff) and modifications that do not invovle replacing or removing whole sub components to achieve that you could have done in any diesel workshop across australia without the need for proprietry or specialist tools (tweaking the fuel pump is ok replacing it is not and reprograming the td5 is out)

** BEST ALL ROUND ENGINE (touring/daily driver/off road/towing) **
The TD5 (this assumes that breakdown assistance will be on hand and you will always be in phone coverage)
** BEST OUTBACK TOURING ENGINE (ECONOMIC) **
tdi300 with the pump lift done and the boost lifted 15% or so to take full advantage if you need it. (the td5's can give better economy but Im factoring in ease of repairability here)
** BEST HARDCORE OFFROAD ENGINE (POWER) **
4.6 V8 from a HSE with all the trimings
** BEST TOWING ENGINE (TORQUE & ECONOMIC) **
a tough call between the isuzu 4bd1t and the Td5 the td5 if you can keep inside breakdown assistance range and the 4bd1t if youre visiting no mans land.

Opps, forgot the budget part... mmmm.... lets see, will for example you have just brought a secondhand car for less than $6k and you couldn't afford a new disco so I guess try and keep it under $10k-$20k (i guess price of a new cheap car these days!) otherwise u might of well brought a late model TD5 with a modchip!

** BEST ALL ROUND ENGINE (touring/daily driver/off road/towing) **
1HD-FTE:p

** BEST OUTBACK TOURING ENGINE (ECONOMIC) **
200tdi

** BEST HARDCORE OFFROAD ENGINE (POWER) **
Anything but a stinking Rover, unless its got forced induction:D

** BEST TOWING ENGINE (TORQUE & ECONOMIC) **
1HD-FTE

Matt.

Shame the 1HD-FTE is that little bit to long for the engine bay:(

This is easy.
Out back touring on it's own, a Diesel.
Everything else, a bored and stroked V8 to 5 litres with haltech EMS.
