ryangus, a tropical roof is a second skin over the roof. The air between the two acts as insulation, keeping the roof cooler under hot sun.

"Tropical" roof is simply an extra 'skin' on top of the normal roof to reduce heat from the sun.
"Safari" roof, AFAIK, was fitted to some SII/SIIA's 109 station wagons. Safari roof was a roof that could be slid open (not unlike a huge sun roof) that would allow passengers to stand up on their seats, stick their heads up and either shoot or photograph wildlife. I have ever seen only one example and that was a SII 109 SW at Hilton Pollards in Colo Heights. Section of the roof above rear passengers looked like it was slightly larger so it could be slid open backwards above the boot. As far as I remember it look like a factory optional extra. Quite neat...

mine also has a patch over a hole probably made for game watching. Maybe why it was called a safari roof:cool:

Official name is Tropical Roof, at least in the 2a parts book. Standard equipment on all Series station wagons, and optional on other hard top/ cabs. Quite effective at reducing internal temperatures. I made one out of sheet aluminium for my Series 1 when I had it in the sixties.
See Capelandy's picture.

I salvaged a tropical roof with the second skin, windows and 4 vents, with the intention of fitting it to my 109, the roof its self was in poor condition so I bought a new old stock roof of ebay 2 years ago. Not sure if I will fit the windows.

I actually have a complete tropical roof for a LWB that I keep meaning to sell if anyone wants one. It has the 4 vents and two long fixed windows. If anyone wants/needs one I'm in Brisbane and it's cheap:)

If anyone has a spare tropical roof for a 2/2a/3 ute cab - I'm interested if it is anywhere feasible.
