Hello all i'm new.:)

Anyway i will get to the point. i have a 1985 County V8 bored out to 3.9lt with extractors and rebuilt. i've had the vehicle for about 2years with only minor problems(1 being it needed a new distributor) other than that it now runs great. but last week i was driving it and it was performing as normal(great) and the next day i reversed out of my driveway only to find the power steering wasnt working. i had a mobile mechanic out to have a look and all he did was let all my power steering fluid out onto my garage floor and said he doesnt have a clue and he charged $30 and left. i want to get it back on the road as soon as possible. the landy mainly is used for road work. any help would be great. thanks:confused:;)

Total failure of the power steering should be easy to diagnose - seems you have a bad choice of mechanic.

I assume you mean power assistance is not working, not that you have no steering. The usual reason for this is total loss of fluid, in which case it is simply a matter of refilling it and finding where it is leaking out and repairing/replacing as indicated. Most likely the pitman shaft seal, which means either a replacement or overhaul of the box.

It could also be total failure of the pump, or simply a loose belt.

Hi.

The steering does work put very hard to turn the wheels.
the power steering fluid container was full and clean no dirt or anything
untill the mechanic let it out and the belts are fine. i suspect the power steering pump has failed and time for a new one. does anyone know where to buy a new one and roughly how much one would cost? thanks heaps:)
