Instrument Lights

While head down to Phillip Island last night, i went to switch my parkers on and noticed i had no dash illumination. Pulled over to check the fuses but couldnt find a fuse for them and dont know IF there is a fuse for them. Then i remembered reading somewhere about fibre optics and possibility of a simple blown globe, so does a 98 disco have this fibre optic system or is there a fuse somewhere for the lights. I dont have a copy of RAVE with me which i will be rectifying when i get home. Luckily i have a pda with gps and GPS Dash loaded which gives you a choice of large instruments of course of which i chose the speedometer - dont want any nasty letters from the powlice next week.

The Disco1 has bulbs.

If they have all gone at once I guess it is either the fuse or the switch.

RAVE says fuse 14 is for 'Instruments, clock, speed transducer'. It is a 10 amp fuse located in the second column of the main set of fuses. It's the second from the top.

Satellite 2 fuse 6 is for 'Radio, clock, alarm, indicator light, interior lights, loadspace lights, trailer lights'. It is a 20 amp fuse located on the far left of the row. Not sure if satellite 2 is the top or bottom row.

I'm just guessing but I'd think it would be either of those two.

I have tried both those fuses but both are fine, i had them on just before we left as i was trying to find the pin in the trailer socket that was for the tail lamps so i could wire up a tail/numberplate lamp for the bike rack. When i pulled no 14 it cut power to the clock and tacho so i dont think its for illumination as well, also noticed my rh parker isnt working but thats possibly un related.

My Haynes Manual indicates the fuse could be either. F4 (10A), F7(10A), F14(10A) all in the passenger fuse box.

Each entry in the Manual for these fuses mention "instrument cluster" in the description but none of them mention "illumination"!

Bugger!!!

Just reread your post, didn't notice the RH parker bit.

Go for F4, fuse is for RH headlight and instrument cluster only!

F4 eh, dont know how that corresponds the fuse layout but i will look at it when i get home. Just as we left to come home last night i turned the lights on and bugger me, no rh tail lights in body or bar :mad:.

I have that problem, it is F8 in the fuse box under the steering wheel.

F8 is the 8th one down ( funnily enough ) from the top on the LHS of the fuse box. Its a 10 amp ( red ). It says in the manual it is for RH tail lights but if you follow the wiring diagram it is also for the instrument lights.

Have never worked out what blows it, but i does it every 3 months.

The running lights for a trailer are also wired to the feed to the right rear tail-light hence also run through fuse 8.

I had continual problems with F8 blowing at intervals and couldn't find any problem with the wiring in the Disco (1997 S1 3.9L) or the trailer. In frustration I switched the trailer running lights to the feed to the left rear tail-light (different fuse).

Haven't blown any fuses for months and everything still works.

That could be where my problem started, i have a small tail/number plate lamp that i was checking for a pin on the plug to pickup the power with the the parkers on, since then no dash light, rh parker or rear rh tail lamps. Did you rewire it completely to the left lights ?

Hi LoanRangie,

Wiring to the left tail-light feeds across the Disco from behind the right tail-light. I just spliced the trailer running lights into the feed to the left tail-light.
Can't remember the colour code but can post it tonight if you like. Didn't need to run any extra wiring.

Sheĺl be right, i wont change it unless i have this problem again.
