Power Steering Pump??

Well, bit the bullet and got our local Landrover experts to replace the due timing belt on our 300tdi Disco. Did a good job by all accounts, except when I was driving the Disco home from work a day later, the power steering pump pulley shifted out of alignment with the drive belt and sheared a rib off the belt.......:mad::mad:. I promptly drove around to the Landrover experts and asked "What the....." thinking it was something they did or didn't do.

However the mechanic had said that the Landrover power steering pumps had a bad habit of failing through the shaft disengaging from the rear plate of the power steering pump allowing the pulley to protrude forward toward the radiator / intercooler and therefore get out of alignment with the drive belt.

His options were to replace the pump with a second hand one or bit the bullet and put a new one in.:(:(.$$$$$$

I asked him if this was an immediate issue or one that could wait, but in what I expected he explained that the pump could fail next week or next month or even 12 months from now, so who knows.

Has anybody heard of this happening or has happened to them before??
SWMBO was definitely not impressed :twisted::twisted: after shelling out for the timing bely only to find that it needed another 500 odd dollars spent on it.

they can get quite a bit of end float, when i replaced the one in my last disco it had a few mm end float and made the belt squeal some of the time.......

happened to me, i went through a couple of belts before i thought whaaaaat and got it fixed. i got a reconditioned one, its worked ok so far...

Having the pump pulley walk out of the front of the pump with the shaft attached on a 300Tdi is common:mad::mad:

Put a new one on, reco ones are hard to get the life span out of for the $$$ spent.

Put it this way, I NEVER fit anything but new ones to these, as they are pretty average pumps in the first place...
The same goes for 4 bolt steering boxes. New, or not at all.

A new one it is then. Might have to have a crack at it myself as well.;)

Matter of fact, may do the P gasket (behind the water pump housing) as well because it's a fibre one and apparently there is a steel replacement gasket that doesn't leak?? Draining the coolant would be a good excuse to finally put in my engine saver and the new opaque header tank I got the other day.

Has anybody heard of this happening or has happened to them before??Yeah, it's happened to mine. Last belt I got make ~5000km out of, but I was aware it was out of alignment. I replaced the old one and I was driving it today and got about 10km out of the new one :( . It whacked the air con belt off its pulleys too, so the warning I got this time was the smell of burning rubber (it was seized behind its tensioner). I just put a new main belt on and started it up to make sure it was all OK and after 30s or so of running I can see it's going to go again very quickly (rubber on the edge isn't happy). My power steering pulley is almost 5mm out of alignment, very obvious, and it's getting worse. I wish there was an easy temporary fix, like whacking it back in with a BFH.


SWMBO was definitely not impressed ...Neither is mine. We're about to trade the Disco and we've got a guy who's taking it for the day tomorrow to assess it. I'm betting the new belt fails on him, poor guy :D . SWMBO is already dying of embarrassment in anticipation since she'll have to deal with him (I'll be out).
