I think he was using the profits from the coke dealing to propup the car business.

There is another contribution the Irish gave the motoring world.
British Racing Green.
Pre WW1, the Gordon Bennett Races couldn't be held in the UK, coz of the red flag act - the 4mph limit. So the English moved the races to Ireland & ran under the colours of the Shamrock. The French ran blue, the Germans silver, can't recall whether Italian red dates from this period as well.
BRG has changed shade a bit over the years though.

Out of interest the speedo only goes up to 85mph
