Steering Relay

Checking through the Series 1 manuals I have I cannot find anything about topping up the steering relay. Checked the workshop manual and it mentions filling before fitting the baseplate when overhauling it.
There is a plug in the top of the shaft and apparently another plug in the body at the top (haven't looked for this on mine yet). I'm guessing fill through the point in the top of the shaft as this is cross-drilled and would deliver the oil between the bushes, the other plug is an air release ?
Same grade oil as the steering box (EP140) ??

I'd also like to drain & re-fill the steering box oil but there seems to be no drain plug. Do you have to remove the cover plate to drain it ??

My relay in my S1 has a grease nipple on the side? not sure if all have as I thought they were oil charged, my steering box also has a grease nipple but then it still has the filler bolt on top of the column tube under the bonnet, dont know if that helps you, I have a 54

Steering relay should have a filler plug on top of the shaft. Remove one top cover bolt to allow the air out. Small passages, slow filling! Use EP90.

Is 90 the correct grade or is it just impossible to get 140 in the filler ?

G'day Colin,
My Series 1 handbook says to use 140 grade oil.

The filler plug is the small bolt in the top of the shaft; the breather plug is the small bolt which screws into the side of the housing, at right angles to the shaft.

I have just rebuilt mine and found it very easy to fill with 140 using an oil can. If yours leaks it may be worthwhile stripping it and replacing the seals and speedi-sleeving the shaft,

There was a brand new old stock S1 relay on flea bay just a few days ago dont know if still there
