I've sold the 300tdi and if I sell one of my foresters I might be able to justify a D2 td5. What are the best configurations for general driving touring and light 4wding? Who does the best chip? Is auto the preferred? Or would a dual gassed V8 be better?

Chipped TD5 auto would give you very close to V8 performance with fuel economy to boot.

watch how hard you go at it as too much on the chip can push the EGT's beynd what some of the parts of the engine can deal with.
I swear by a manual 110 but Im somewhat biased.

So what is the difference between a V8 & td5 wrt l/100kms?
And what of the costs of other running-maintenance?
Simply (for me who is simply)
1. If a V8 does 15l/100km and I do 20,000km pa - I'll use 3000l petrol @ 1.45 = $4350pa
2. If a td5 gets 10l/100km - 2000l diesel @ $1.57 = $3,140
Saving on diesel in 1 year=$1210 or cost on fuel for V8 $1210
So over 5 years... $6000 saving with diesel...... so.....
Are V8s obtainable at least $6000 cheaper initially?
Oh and I did not factor other maintenance costs?
Reliability of V8 vs td5?
What's involved in dual gassing a D2? Are there many about?
Back to original q - what are most reliable basic - standard suspension configs as well?
(Oh - sorry to see tombraider jump ship..)

might be worth thinking about - the diesel is worth more when you get rid of it.

the best config is the one I have of course ;)
I reckon the Td5 is better coz there are still reliability issues with the V8s and at least you get economy with the diesel!
It seems that there are more threads discussing 'issues' with the auto box than the manual and I personally find the manual more fun to drive.
I reckon the excellent performance of ACE is worth any potential dramas you might have with the system.
On the other hand, I'd prefer to have coils/polyair airbags on the rear due to issues people have had with SLS airbags/valves/compressors etc. Having said that, people with SLS generally seem pretty impressed by it...

Then again, a LPG injected V8 will do similar kays but cost 50% less :D

I think I have seen more threads on TD5 issues than any other motor.. Petrol V8's are simple and last a long time. Even if one does go belly up, it costs one third of a Diesel to replace. That buys an awfull lot of petrol. :D

totally agree that there are lots more threads about Td5 issues but this would have something to do with the fact that there are more Td5s than V8s on this forum...but I agree, seems to be more to go wrong with the Td5. However, I get the impression that the 4/4.6 V8s aren't as reliable as the 3.9s and slipped cylinder liners is a rather catastrophic problem to have if you're one of the unlucky ones, and there's not much you can do to prevent it (unlike most of the Td5 issues).
Depending on your environmental bent, I'd also struggle to live with 20l/100km on petrol and 25l/100km on lpg in running a V8...and these figures head radically north of this when sand-driving. Yes, I know that in terms of the greenhouse gas 'potency' of their respective emissions, diesel is worse than petrol which is worse than LPG. However, this difference is not enough to make up for the much greater quantities of petrol/LPG that you use in a V8. People may quote lower V8 figs than the above, but in my experience you have to drive pretty conservatively to achieve them, and that's no fun, is it?
