have you checked the air cleaner and replaced the fuel filter first of all, next check the intercooler you can pressure test it with some compressed air and a gauge you could be loosing boost, next crack the lines to all your injectors while it is idling are you getting fuel to them all, have you checked the compression on all cylinders, check the small hose from the turbo to the fuel pump aneroid.
just some thoughts maybe you have already done all this.
good luck matt

If youve had the head off your injector timing may be out so it may pay to spil time it (if you can on a 300TDI, Ive never had to try) or make sure your Valve clearences are correct other than that it could only be about 1000 other things so a bit more info might help.
Edit - Might help if you put in your location as there may be someone nearby that is in the know that could help you out...

You may want to check your fuel pump as well, I just had mine re done as my 98 Disco 300tdi lost power as well, due to the plunger that lets fuel in from the anaroid valve was sticking, had heaps of turbo boost but not fuel getting in, also when they pulled the pump apart they found it still had rubber seals in it.

Just letting you know you can't spill time a rotary fuel pump, you can only check the injection timing with a dial indicator on the back of the pump.

Umm not entirely true, there are some rotary pumps that I have spill timed BUT they are on stationary engines so are more than likely a different set up.
As I said, I wasnt sure if you could with a 300TDI so there you have it, apparently you cant ;)

Another question why would taking the head off and replacing it have anything to do with injector timing
It didnt last time i looked:D

he's right you would have to acctually have to adjust the fuel pump timing by taking of a cover and turning a nut. Either your not getting enough fuel or air or compression is low.

Good point, Im now having a senior moment I suppose but I wrote that while I was tired and wasnt thinking things through very much.:bangin:
I was meaning that he should check the injector timing and seems he'd had the head off then to check the valve clearences.....I think that would make more sense.:BigThumb:
Now do I look a little less like a DH lol :p

have you checked the simplest things first.......
like are you actually getting full throttle.......this has caught a few people out before.......

Im with Tony
Cables stretch,if it aint opening the pump fully, small turbo diesels suffer a huge power drop.
Get somebody to hold the pedal down hard, see if you can open the pump wider at the same time by hand.

other things to try is new filters and bypassing the sediment catcher....if a disco ( worked for me) i now have a Delphi 296 fuel filter with built in glas bowl and nothing else between the tank and the engine bay

Hi Mate;
Just a Long shot , have checked "the boost pressure signal hose" from the wastegate actuator to your Fuel Pump housing , if pump is not recieving the correct boost signal from the the Turbo then your Fuel pump will solely rely on governor for the power. I hope I said did correctly?
and as also said all other obvious things
such as
Throttle cable
valve clearances
air filter
fuel sedimenter or blocked fuel lines
fuel filter
