Hey guys

Thought I would stick this in here first before the market section.

Top mount intercooler with bracket to bolt to intake manifold and bonnet scoop $120 + freight. No hoses as they were reused to suit another project.

All as per photo. ( was in a RRC)

one would need a bonnet scoop to make it worthwhile correct?

so what are you changing to? front mount? water to air?

It comes with a scoop Similar to GU nissan type.

Changing to a bigger top mount to help with pushing the 35"' tyres etc.

Yep made them a few years ago. Just standard height got the tube bent up at a local tube benders and machined up the bottom plate. Welded them up and powder coated them.

Justin

Why dont you come down to Emu Creek for a hard run in April with us. I,ll even let you buy me a tube of ''Knead It''

I've hear from the boys at KLR that an intercooler did F*#@ all on the 4BD1-T, They did mention that they tried it on the non waste gated turbo version, but alas this is what I have.

Your opinion?

My water to air IC knocks between 25 and 35 degrees off the intake temps.

Any engine will perform better if you can reduce the intake temp of the air. I know the KLR boys very well and their Isuzu rangies are intercooled:cool:. Funny that.

Isuzu even intercooled the 4BD2 themselves.
If you're running under 10psi boost then it's a take it or leave it thing. But who runs less than 10psi boost?

The factory turbo has two models, mines the model without the wastegate. Havn't tested mine personaly but a mate that has the same set up had it run up on the dyno, and boost peaked at around 8 psi.
I wouldn't mind more but don't want to sacrifice reliability.

I've intercooled mine, BIG frontmount. I have no before and after figures, but after a long hard climb, I can barely touch the turbo outlet pipe into the IC, and the outlet to the manifold is cool to the touch. I would say it is doing its job. I'm running 15psi at the manifold.
After I replace the trans, I'll try and do a dyno run for interests sake.
And yes, anything less than 10Psi it is debateable as to whether it is worthwhile.

What're you doing to the trans and how do you dyno them (2wheel, 4 wheel etc)?

There are at least 3 turbos.

IHI RHB6. Wastegated, top mount
Garrett T25 wastegated.
Garrett T25 free floating with T3 mounting flange.

Hi Dougal,

I am on my 4th set of transfer case thrust washers, after about 30,000km!(LT95):(

I have recently bought an Ex Mil 6X6 LT95, with taper roller TF case etc, and this is going in shortly.

Local TAFE has a 4 wheel dyno, I'm offering the truck for a night course dyno run if they are interested...:twisted:

Justin, old thread i know, but any pics of your new top mount intercooler????? Interested to see what you've done, i can't fit a front mount and don't want a water to air

not a real good photo mate but it is 450 x 450 x 75 and does a good job although mounting it to the motor is not a good idea. Body mount is better.43051

Is that core size or overall? I have one here thats 450x300x75 core size, but boy it takes up a lot of room. Hoping to find something factory for ease of parts

A lot of japanese vans (incl prados and 200 cruisers) run a top-mount which is fed air by ducts under the bonnet which lead towards the grille. Could be worth a look at.

Overall mate and yes they take up a heap of room.

A top mount intercooler will not work as efficiantly as a front monted cooler. 1st there is little area on top of the motor to fit the intercooler and where is the air going to go to? Straight into a hot motor! 2ndly a bonnet scoop is not very efficient as the hole in the front is usually in a low air pressure area. Look at the reversed scoops HDT put on Toranas and Commoders, The base of the windscreen is a high air pressure area and the reversed scoops got more air to the carby than a front facing scoop! The most common mod Toyota and Nissan owners do to their top mount intercoolers is fit a thermofan that runs the whole time the engine runs!

Yep we sort of worked this one out mate;)

If you read our posts we run AC and high mount winches, which leaves us a top mount as our only choice. I also run vents in the sides of the bonnet to help reduce and positive pressure that is under it.

pretty sure a top mount will run more efficiantly than no intercooler;). All modern deisels seem to be running top mounts these days. I'm looking to put mine on the drivers side of the engine with a 10" thermo fan under it for low speed work. Will keep investimagating it:)
Could hook the thermo up to a relay for when the EGT's start getting high

A boost switch would be the easiest way. I wonder if a radiator thermo-fan switch would work as a boost temperature switch? A 90C cut-in temp from the turbo could work nicely.

Still thinking this is the way to go for me (top mount I/c). Any chance you have a better pic dranged?

FWIW This is why I went WTA. bit more expensive and complicated but it is an option.
