View Full Version : The Manager of Australia's Largest Land Rover Fleet
BBC

Congratulations are in order for Ken Gillespie. Today Ken was appointed into the position of manager of Australia's largest fleet of Land Rovers, as Chief of Army.
I know Ken personally and it will probably not make any mention until he retires but Ken started out in the Army as an Apprentice Bricklayer. Becoming Chief of Army is a pretty big rise.
Can anyone name anyone else who has risen so far in public life?

I wish we could drop this "krudd" thing.
Even politicians, no matter what you think of them, do not need to be referred to in an obviously derogatory manner.
It might seem witty but it loses it after being repeated a few times.

And polarising posts - some folks here are masters at it. :(

I thought 'K Rudd' wasn't derogatory. They were trying to make him sound young and cool. Like a rapper name.
Not Krudd as in crud.

Your quite wrong - John Howard may have been Prime Minister but he never stopped being an ******** so his rise was only from being a lawyer to being a senior politician both positions being at the level of slime.

Too right Scallops.
Too many, too often lately.
Folks, can we get off the political crap, and the sniping posts?
WTF has any of that got to do with the original post in the thread? Nothing.
I'm all for a thread hijack or taking the mickey, but there's too much negative bitching lately.
Its not what this forum is about and it used to be known for the lack of it.
If you want to constantly whinge, bait and snipe, sod off to OL or some other forum, where they get off on bagging each other.
Have a nice day...
Love you all :D

Nearly... but I don't wish to name..... my uncle started out as a local garage mechanic in Adelaide hills at beginning of WWII>during WW merchant navy engineer>after war - regular army mechanic>then headed overseas to become head trainer of Thai army engineers>returned to Oz - became 2ic of WA Armed Forces> left army & headed to hammersley iron as chief engineer. A true gentleman who is now deceased, but who started out life as a very humble local garage mechanic.... and he remained a humble person all his life. RIP.

Fact.
Land Rover (the losers) didn't even tender or EOI for the new contract.
Will be a few years off yet.

WTF has any of that got to do with the original post in the thread? Nothing. To those suggesting that the thread was becoming too divisive. My previous post (http://www.aulro.com/afvb/general-chat/53651-manager-australias-largest-land-rover-fleet-2.html#post714532) was directed at politicians generally (all flavours) and I was using the Australian Reader’s Digest annual survey of trusted professionals as my basis. Trusted Occupations (http://grif.com.au/Trusted-Occupation.75.0.html) in a list of 26, politicians come last, immediately after car salesmen and lawyers rate only 21st.
It was directly related to the comment of public life in the original post.

Getting back on subject. Billy Hughes had a humble beginning.
In October 1884 he embarked for Queensland as an assisted migrant on the Duke of Westminster, reaching Brisbane on 8 December. For two years he led a roving life, taking various jobs and acquiring knowledge of the outback, as well as material for reminiscences that grew more colourful with time. Finally, as a galley-hand on a coastal boat, he arrived at Sydney. After a period of acute poverty he found a steady job as assistant to an oven-maker and domestic stability in a boarding-house near Moore Park. He married his landlady's daughter, Elizabeth Cutts, and in 1890 moved to Balmain where he opened a small mixed shop, took on odd jobs and mended umbrellas.
Cheers,
