hey, am new to this forum. am about to buy a 2nd hand td5 SE disco and have a simple question. the engine was built in 2001, the compliance plates was 2002 and the car was first bought of the yard and registered in 2003. what year model does that make it? and also - apparently the 2002 model isn't able to be modified to have the diff lock engaged from the secondary gear stick - any thoughts or experience with this? If we head to fraser, is diff lock nessasary?

Welcome.
Some Disco's are missin the leaver and other's are missing the whole centre diff lock. The disco owners will be along soon to confirm which models.

Welcome to the forum.
It sounds like it should be a 2002, but go off the VIN. If you key it in to this site it will tell you the year Clifton Scientific Text Services, the Netherlands (http://www.clifton.nl/index.html?calvin.html)
From 03 they had the 4 head lights and clear lenses. These came to Australia with the CDL installed as of late 02.
You are correct about the CDL, the external stub was removed from the transfer case by 2002. I've never actually looked at this (I have an 03), but someone else can post pic's as to what to check under the vehicle.
CDL makes it better but its not the total solution.

Hi babar,
You will have to crawl under and squeeze your hand up over the front of the tc and feel around for 3 nuts shaped in a triangle and in the middle is a shaft, your answer is yes you have the cdl inside if found, go to project tutorials and common threads, also do a search on this forum, loads of info. Hope this helps.

There was definately a grey area when some Disco's had the cdl internals and some did not, as well as a time when some had flashable ecu's and some did not. The only definate way to find out is to crawl under and physically check the transfer case.

I fitted the CDL to the transfer case and genuine LR actuator to my 02. It is now a completely different vehicle whereby the Traction Control complements the CDL. There have been some situations in the past where my vehicle without the CDL was useless as a 4wd. I had more capability from the two standard D1's I had owned earlier doing the same type of off-road work.
If you plan to do serious off-road work (not sand driving) then it would be worth getting hold of a D2a or one that has a CDL installed.

what is the cost of just fitting the internals to a non cdl d2?

I bought the internals and linkages second hand for my D2. Cost was $800. I had the whole sheebang fitted (this is not a minor job) for a further $360. Total $1160.
Now it's just like a REAL Landrover :)

I got hold of a second hand front housing from a D2a transfer case + genuine second hand D2a LR shift/actuator + had an upgrade to the TC intermediate shaft bush done for approx $1400. I had no g/box & TC remove and fit costs so you will have to get a quote for that. Also the Gbox tunnel mount plate requires modification to fit the genuine shift/actuator.
I prefer to keep everything genuine; however there are other shift/actuator options to choose from.

I am keen to find out how this all goes as i also have a 2002 with no cdl. I didnt find out until I took it along to ARB to get an aftermarket actuator fitted.
I have been told in this forum that the cdl will fight the TC and cause problems but I doubt this.
Anyone know exactly what I need and I will try and order all the bits from a wrecker. Does the gear box all have to come out as well or just the tfer case?.
Might as well do the clutch etc at the same time if it does.

Hi Mike...
Who told you that TC and CDL will fight each other?
Thats not the case, in fact they compliment each other extremely well....
