Hi,
I have just bought a 93 Disco tdi with lpg. Very happy with her, fitted new tyres and got an alarm fitted. The door locking electric motors were stuffed and I had them replaced.
I had the first service done by a local mechanic. She has done 439,000 clicks and I was told by the seller the engine and gearbox have been rebuilt. I can see the springs and suspension has been replaced and she drives well.
I had a V8 disco for 10 years and did all the servicing myself (all pretty minor stuff) I have a factory workshop manual. My question is how easy is it to service the diesel model yourself.
I'm imagining the oil (what type do you recommend please as I assume it's different) and filter will be easy to do. The disc brakes look the same so swapping pads should be easy. Is there anything special I need to be aware of?
Any helpful advice much appreciated.
Getting 7-8 ltrs per 100k's on lpg/diesel is fantastic compared to the 20 ltrs a 100k my old one devoured. :)
Thanks
Martin

nothing particularly special to do aprt from usual oil at 5k filter at 10k, keep an eye on coolant and when the timing belt was replaced, check sedimenter and fuel filter. not familiar with the 200tdi but above is for starters.

Loanrangie is right, diesels are easy and it's all pretty much common sense. unless you're a diesel mechanic the injectors are the only thing you can't do yourself but they're unlikely to ever cause you any problems particularly if you use good fuels. Just one thing though, I do not believe in changing oil and filters at different times, do them both together. Engines are expensive, filters are cheap. A mate of mine owns a transport company and they service the trucks every 10k without fail, new oil and filters. They only use top quality oil and it's as good when it comes out as it is when it goes in.

As you have LPG fitted your Tdi will be running much cleaner, internally and externally, than a diesel engine without LPG, I would do some research (on here or Google) on LPG/Diesel, your oil will stay cleaner and viable much longer than in a standard diesel engine.
Under no circumstances would I change the oil (at whatever Klm/intervals you pick) and NOT change the Oil Filter at the same time, it is false economy, for the cost of a filter. Land Rover recommends changing oil and filters together and so do I, Regards Frank.

That recommendation according to publication LRL0521ENG extends to diesel models only.
300Tdi models replace oil and filter every 10k
V8 models replace oil every 10k, oil and filter every 20k

Accordimg to my L/R W/shop manual, published 1993 by Tech. Comm. Dept. of L/R for Land Rover Discovery (up to end of 1994 model year) says change Oil and Filter together at prescribed intervals and that applies to 3.5, 3.9, V8s & 2.0 Mpi and 200 Tdi Diesel.
Why would Landrover from 94 to 95 change from oil and filter together to oil at 10K and filters at 20K for V8s.
I have never seen a valid argument for not changing the oil filter at every oil change, Regards Frank.

Not a false economy, a Z9 for a V8 is only 5-6 bucks but a Z89a is more like $25, i think after reading a lot of posts from Rick130 who seems the most knowledgeable oils and lubricants guru here i wil go by his recomendation that at 5k the filter has only just started doing its job.

So from what I'm seeing here I'll replace the oil and filter at 10,000. What is the best oil to put in the tdi engine ?
Thanks

On my 200Tdi I was using Mobil Delvac 1 with Mann W930/20 Filters (which I bought for $20 each from a filtration supplier in Sydney.) I'll be doing the same with my new 300Tdi.

10k if using synthetic or 5k for mineral oil.

10k if using synthetic or 5k for mineral oil.
if only highway miles are involved, and reasonable trip lengths, a good mineral based oil like Caltex Delo 400 or Mobil Delvac MX will easily go 10,000km.
Short trips where the oil never gets to operating temp (in my experience a trip of at least twenty km is needed to open the oil t/stat) and stop start driving stress an oil like nothing else.
I'm a pedant and use the absolutely best stuff I can get my hands on, but any good diesel oil from one of the major oil companies will protect a standard 300Tdi well.
One thing I'm not sure of is how the LPG may react and possibly increase oil nitration. LPG specific petrol engine oils are available to combat potential nitration and it's adverse effects, but has anyone done any testing on LPG/diesel and oil nitration ?

I have never used petrol station oils, Caltex, Mobil, Shell etc in any vehicle I have ever owned and quite possibly never will, I don't even use it in my generator. Apart from the cost Penrite is probably still one of the best oils, and despite the fact that you can buy it at Woolies, Valvoline is also a very good product. For years I have used Valvoline in my standard engines, petrol and diesel, and Penrite in my high performance engines. The best thing would be to take notice of everyones advise, but choose an oil that best suits your engine and your requirements.
