Hi,
I want to put a new JVC head unit (a KD-BT1 with bluetooth and USB) into my Disco Classic 2005, it would replace the original single slot CD unit.
I want to DIY it if I can, I've installed one of these units before but on a Japanese car which was very easy! I'm imagining the Disco will be more complex!
Any tips? And is there a pre-made wiring harness I can buy anywhere to convert the current harness to the new JVC harness.
Thanks for any help!

I think the current harness is referred to as an ISO connection. My understanding is you can do it, but I haven't as yet. If I do it will be to replace the unit with an iPod connected one.
If you go to a good car audio fitter (not one that just does doof-doof stuff but more the audiophile) you will probably get some good advice on what is needed.

Did it still allow the steering wheel controls to work?
Can you give a part number/name?

IIRC the part no. for mine was APP8PIO as I was installing a Pioneer HU and they doen't list LR Vehicles on their site.
Refer Aerpro INTERNATIONAL : APP8PIO : Pioneer to ISO Harness 14 Pin | NEW PRODUCTS | First Choice in Car Audio Accessories & Digital Media Accessories (http://www.aerpro.com.au/list.php?pcode=APP8PIO&cat_name=New%20Products&cat_no=&cat_sno=)

Fantastic, that'll make life easier, no soldering iron!
Does the JVC unit just slot in as a replacement for the current unit, or do you need a new fascia plate or anything like that?
My next question was going to be about the steering wheel controls for volume and band, anyone got any good tips for getting them to work?

Forgot a bit sorry. I don't have steering wheel controls so can't provide advice on that area. I know mine has the wiring should I wish to retro fit the buttons but not sure how she would work. Perhaps new HU are designed with steering wheel controls in mind considering they are more common now compared to when my HU was released...some 6 years ago.

Does anyone have a tip as to how to get the CD player out of the Disco, I can only see some holes that don't look like they have screws, do I need some sort of tool?

Pulled out the old plugged the harness in and slid in the new, didnt even change the cradle. Not sure about the sw controls but i guess if they connect thru the loom they should still be active ?

The proper tool is a U-shaped 2 prong device which slides into each hole releasing the retainer tabs. It also hooks in at the back and allows you to pull the unit out of the dash.
I ended up using a length of whip aerial which I had chopped off my VHF aerial when tuning it. Something about 1mm to 1.5mm dia. should fit, a coat hanger may be a little large. You'll need 4 lengths at a min of approx. 100mm. This will release the retaining tabs but you'll still need to gently prise from the dash - easy.
If all to hard, pop into a LR Dealer and ask them to pop it for you.

I installed it today and its all working, so thanks to all for the help!
I tried to get the unit out with some bits of coat hanger wire, and while it engaged the clips, I couldnt pull the unit out... I went over to Autobarn and they pulled it out for me with proper DIN tools, took 5 secs.
I had to buy a euro antenna adaptor for $5 to fit the JVC motorola plug.
I pulled out the existing metal sleave and installed the supplied JVC one, slid the unit in and clipped in place, too easy.
The JVC to DIN wiring harness made installation a sinch, no soldering, no wires, just plug and play.
Its a bluetooth model, the KD-BT1, and the mic cord was easy to put up the A pillar and not too hard to get the cable back to the head unit.
The steering wheel control of course dont work, but the JVC remote works pretty much the same.
BTW, Supercheap Auto have these JVC units on sale, $280 off the retail, for $199... bargain.
Thanks again.
