G'day Everyone,
Hope you all had a safe and enjoyable Easter.
Just thought i might pick your brains again for some info. I just read something that i found interesting on eBay. A bloke selling Land Rover 110 Defender Doors reckons that they will also fit Series 3 Vehicles. Can anyone confirm or deny this?
This procedure may upset the people amongst us that like to keep the Series vehicles original, but for mine that was a little to late even when i bought it. I need new door tops, plus bottoms had a small amount of rust. I thought at least if this was a possible option i could have windy windows hahahhaha.
Also anyone know a good Land Rover Wreckers around south east QLD?
Any thoughts appreciated.
Cheers, Josh

If they're early 110 they'll will fit. I'm not sure about the later Defenders. You'll need to use the series 3 hinges but the 110 catches.

Series 2/2a/3 and 90/110/Defender doors are interchangeable in all models, subject to the following caveats.
1. Check strap arrangements vary (S2/2a and 90/110/Defender the sliding bit is on the bulkhead, but different, S3 it is in the door), and you may have to do some bodging.
2. 90/110 and Defender doors are thicker than Series doors, especially after 1986 when the outboard seats were moved in and the steering wheel size reduced when the door thickness was increased even more. This may be a real problem on a Series without power steering.
3. You will have to use the lock to match the door, with the appropriate striker plate on the door pillar - this may mean new holes.
4. Hinge mount holes are the same throughout.
5. The 90/110/Defender doors are a lot heavier than the Series ones - except of course for the military doors, which are the same as the Series ones.

Hi another thing to think about too.Is due to the doors having windup windows there is more that can go wrong with them as opposed to sliding glass. On my 110County the windup cables and pulleys are knackerd and even if I can find spare parts I have been told "its a real basted of a job" to sort out. And from personal experiance you do loose a lot of space as the doors are much thicker. Have you thought about fitting alloy door tops? might be a better & cheaper option cheers Brendon.

Hmmm,
Starting to sound like more effort than its worth. Its big money for defender doors, i dont wanna get the wrong ones and waste all that money.
Brendon, What are alloy door tops? Excuse my ignorance. Are these just the standard door tops?
I might just go buy a few bottles of rust converter and try and salvage the old door tops.
Cheers, Josh

Hi I have seen the door tops advitised in the UK Landy mags and have been told that there avalable through selected Land Rover spare parts outlets. What I like about them is that there made to the same design as the factory ones, also there lighter dont rust & you dont have to worry about the reaction between the steel and alloy. Iam planning to get some for the Stage 1 soon.
Cheers Brendon.

If you do get the Series tops Ex UK get their military ones.
The glass is different,it opens alot wider than ours.Unsure,it may just be a matter of getting custom glass and sliders made.Definateley alot better window setup if you are retaining sliders!!!

What they actually do is have the join between the bits of glass parallel to the sloping front of the frame rather than parallel to the vertical back. This allows a larger opening, and would be easy to do with any frame by getting custom glass cut and making custom spacers. There is nothing special about the frame.
