View Full Version : D1 Impact Sensor ?

I am quickly becoming familiar with my 95 D1 V8 Manual ES, learning all sorts of bits and pieces (often referring to the Rave CD or searching these pages).

Here's one I can't find............

I hit a cavernous ditch at about 100k's on a dirt track and my hazard lights started operating.

1st thought I had accidentally hit the switch or blinkers or similar, check them all out but nothing switched on?

Pulled up and turned motor & ignition off. Hazards still blinking away?

Started removing various relays and fuses and basic fault finding stuff including looking for shorts (thought the impact may have shorted a blinker or similar?) still the Hazards kept blinking?

OK ready to start driving with the Hazards on (was going to pull the globes if I had to). Turn ignition back on and cranked motor...........hey Hazards go out????

Sort of reminds me of restarting a "computa". Is there some type of impact sensor which I activated? or just one of those gremlins ???? :)

Yes there is, I had a similar experience plunging down a sand dune at Stockton beach a few years ago. It is up under the glovebox somewhere I think.

Has happened a few times since. Turn off and restart resets it.

There was a fix for this years ago. there is an inertia switch in the alarm "spider". You have to cut a couple of wires.
I had a fellow club member who had it happen over and over. Used to turn ign off, lock car, walk around it , unlock, then start.
The Microsoft reboot.
I am sure some fellow sufferer here can direct you to the thread. I thought they all would have been fixed years ago. Just goes to show your car had not been off road.

Looks like I was on the right track with my thoughts, thanks for the confirmation. (and yes the blinking sound was comming from under the glove box) I had thought my beastie had seen a reasonable amount of off road prior to my purchase but perhaps not! I am certainily making up for any lack of off road this vehicle may have done. I was quite proud of having the dirtiest car in the car park at work after easter. :BigThumb:

I have read about the spider mod required, not sure if mine has been done. I have been putting of venturing to far under or into the dash just yet

I think this has a lot to do with the market and model of the car you have.

On our Middle East spec Disco's the inertia switch will set off the hazard lights if we hit a pot hole etc just like yours. To re-set the thing you have to turn off the ignition and it will cancel the hazards etc...

I also know of people who have hit a much larger bump and the inertia switch has cut out the fuel pump. This is a safety feature in the case of a heavy front end collision to prevent petrol being pumped out.
You then have to pop the bonnet and despress the rubber buttoned re-set device on the engine firewall.

Thats my understanding of the inertia switch.

Thanks Streaky, I knew about the Fuel Pump cut out, this is well written in owners manuals etc. and makes good sense to have. I think you are correct in that being an ES with SRS etc etc this sensor could be related to the SRS components but I can not find any easy to find documentation about it.

Either way, at least now I know it is an easy fix and not a precursor to something more evil lurking in my electrical system.

Hi Folks,

I bought a brand new D1 in 1998 that occasionaly did that. I thought it was just a loose connection somewhere.

I purchased another 1997 D1 a while ago and that did it as well. Usually whilst driving along really corrugated roads.

If somebody finds a fix, let me know.

M.

The fix is to stop, turn off the ignition and lock the car, and then unlock it again; has happened to me twice now. The spider had already been disconnected on my car,

I think the inertia switch is in the alarm ecu module, rather than the spider. These are two quite separate boxes. However I will be proven wrong if someone without an alarm has this problem.

Hi guys recently I went driving minding my own biz when the road jumped up and shook the beast and me, after this the hazard lights began to flash. When I turned them on they went twice as fast HUMMM. So in a fit of rage I puled over and started looking for the relay! I found it eventually after busting some plastic tabs the little bugger was in a small box on the LH foot well to the far left. Thinking I was very smart I pulled the plug out! YEP I know both of em, but hey the hazards stoped SUCCES when I plugged them back in they came straight back on until I went to start the bugger, she would not start (had to roll start in reverse with only a couple of metres of room how good am I) but the 4ways stopped flashing all was well again "except I was to scared to turn it off till I got home". Any way I have a point the monster lives again starts as normal BUT the friggen remotes wont work any more (not that they worked very well anyway).

So my question is does any one know how to get em working again with out a trip to Land Rover, so missus will have some cash to remove from her second wallet?

yep i just cut and pasted cos i don't know how to direct you guys back to my first post. and to ask the same question would have required me to rethink and rewrite my question and i'm to lazy for that.

p.s. on tuesday morning after easter i was 10 foot tall cos my beast was the dirtyest thing with in 5kms of the work carpark:cool:

p.p.s the jump pic didn't cause the problem different monster!

For Mr King - what appears to have happened is that your alarm ecu has had it's power interrupted when you were pulling plugs and relays out, and the fob(s) have become unsynchronized with the alarm ECU.

The recommended fix (as in the owner handbook) is to open the car with the key, and then push the lock button on the fob four times. This is also the same procedure if you fit new batteries to the fob.

If the road jumps up at you again, and the alarm ECU trips again - stop, turn ignition off, wait a few seconds and turn ignition back on, and the hazards should cancel.

For MA series owners only - non-alarm Discos have a blanking plug with a jumper wire installed in the loom connector for an alarm. If your alarm ecu keeps going off whilst off road, then you could temporarily disconnect your alarm, fit the blanking plug and re-fit the alarm when you get back on the tarmac.
Otherwise to remove the inertia switch means disassembling the ecu itself and unsoldering the component. I haven't found an ecu to play with so I can't say how easy or hard it is.

Cool thanks langy, problem solved, sadly my mighty beast never came with an owners hand book, I should look into that when the motivation attacks me :D. but I think I solved the problem with the reset button which I found (I assume) as two little rubber plug type thingies about 1-2mm in diameter, in a plug mounted on the lh firewall between the washer bottle and the firewall, very indiscreet they looked like water proofing stopers in unused wire holes, any how I pushed them and now both remotes work like new (the second remote stoped working weeks before for no reason) so happy days all is well and the sun shines on me again hooray.
