My wife couldn't see the irony of watching a 300Watt Plasma, while having all 100watts of lights out.

Yep, we really saved the planet last night (no sarcasm intended). I wonder if the dogooders understand that turning off the lights for an hour does nothing.

Those coal burning generators are still running, making electricity just in case it's needed as there's no way to store it.

True, but the idea is that it raises awareness of using less power, then they can produce less in the future...

I, however, remembered at 9:05pm :(

Yeah, but what worries me is that most people will think that turning off lights is actually doing good, when what they need to do is actually commit to reducing demand permanently so we can scale back power generation.

Residential demand metering is coming and you watch, they'll be a lot of screaming and gnashing of teeth, but it's the only way.

Huh, did I miss something...something about lights...then Blues...thought State of Origin was on...but to early in the year...something about Hawks and lots of "Carns"

for a prolonged low they spool them down but for a short sudden drop they dump on a big ass dummy load. Very cool to see how its all managed. In effect all everyone turning their lights off achieved was raising the temperature of a biiiig bucket of water. If however they turned them all off for say a week, that might result in one or 2 of the multitude of generators being spooled down early for some scheduled maintenance.

For a real difference they should have done it in the middle of summer and had everyone turn their aircons off for a month.
