Hi All,

Had a couple of likely lads viewing Fluffy this evening...

They turned up after seeing the ad in the car window down at the local shops car park..they called up and said they were in the area and just passing through Canberra on their way home..should of had alarm bells at this stage..

They pull up outside the house in an old beat up Jackeroo and low and behold..'Steptoe & Son' appear from the smoke being belched out from the exhaust..:o

The little old guy was a spitting image of Wilfrid Brambell..and the younger lad looked a bit like Harold !..quick scan of the trailer attached to the Jackeroo and it was full of old engine bits , washing machines and fridges..I assumed correctly when old Steptoe said they were wreckers and collect old scrapmetal..thought that's not right when they are coming round to look at Fluffy..she's not ready for the scrapheap yet

After a quick walk round the car ..then went through all the usual chat about servicing etc...of we go for a drive..

Young 'Harold' gets to drive first and in he gets...he then realises he has never driven an auto before and asks what to do :o...told him ..foot on brake..pull in lever and put in D..eventually works out what lever I'm talking about and we move off..get onto the highway and he floors it straight to 130 in no time..I comment that their is a camera up ahead and he continues..then all of a sudden he hits the brakes and we get to 80 just in time before our picture is taken..

We pull over for old Steptoe to have a drive and adjusts the seat as far forward as possible and just about manages to see over the wheel..he decides to go off into the side streets and do a bit of sightseeing..comments from young Harold stating he thinks the ride is a bit harsh and not as quiet as the Jackeroo..!!:o:o..at this time it's starting to get dark and I'm thinking it's better we get home as I'm not too sure that these two individuals would be good company in the dark..

We get home and they have another look around the car..and the young Harold has a poke around trying to pull bits of trim off and has the audacity to give the front bumper a kick !!..he said that he's heard that bits fall of these Range Rovers very easily and just checking..

Old Steptoe starts to talk some money and his comments are as follows..

"Just to make it a bit easier for everyone and we all get on our way with a smile on our face ..i'll give you 7000 for it cash and be on our merry way home"

"I need something to replace the old Jackeroo as my scrap collecting truck and thinking this old Rangie would just about be alright"

I commented that 7000 is not really in the region of what I was looking for..he then reaches into his back pocket and pulls out a wad of notes..no kidding..their must of been 10,000 or more in 100 notes..I had had enough by then and said the deal is not going to happen and I think our time has been wasted enough..

Young Harold then said his goodbyes and said to me that I should think about it a bit more as he thinks I'm getting a good offer..

Off they went in another cloud of diesel soot ...I thought tyre kicking could not go that low..but you do get to meet some interesting people when your trying to sell your beloved cars !..:p

Now have to get the disinfectant out and clean the seats in Fluffy !

Anyone else had good tyre kicking experiences ???

cheers,
Richard

Richard you have my complete understanding:D

I nearly punched two blokes clean in the face who came to look at my Disco. One person said they wanted it fully detailed before they bought it because it was a little "shabby" inside. Sorry dude but find me another pre-MA disco that is this well preserved (no rips or tears on the seats, stains, holes, burn marks, screw holes, scratches) and I will be to BUCKLEY'S! If you want it detailed, get it detailed yourself! For all the thousands I've spent its still a very good deal.

The other's buying criteria was not how many kms, condition, servicing, off road work, recent repairs etc but.... wait for it.... "is it possible to sleep in it?" HA! Stop wasting my time please.

Another rang up and said "Hi, I'm from interstate and I'll offer you $x (it was half the asking price), so do I get on a plane or not?"... my reply... "No need to, bye".

I wont sell a car again, trade in, couldn't deal with the crap:D

swmbo's faithful bubble laser went up for sale cheap after it had given her at least 10yrs faithful service. 400000km but everything is still as it left the factory.
A pair of hillbillies turn up (stained shirt too small, tracksuit pants also too small, you get the picture) in this old Honda clunker.
Laser had some issues big and small so I walked him round it pointing them out. It was unregistered. I stressed to him the clutch was in bad shape & wouldn't hold out for long (I could drive it all day no problem even at full throttle, but someone only had to get it hot and before long it would slip and shudder and wouldn't come good till it cooled down) and the CVs were starting to complain. He had no idea. She at least knew how to dip the oil, check the coolant and tap for rust (I'll give it that much this old laser was still pure metal after all those years).
So we go for a drive.

We lived on a bit of a hill. He pulls out the drive and turns up the hill riding the clutch pretty heavily, I winced a bit and sucked thru my teeth.
It's about 30m to the corner and gets steeper as you go. He goes for 2nd.
4000rpm and working that clutch like an RM125. I'm having kittens now. Any second there'll be a bushfire and we'll be going back the way we came. He's not gonna buy the thing after all this and it won't be driveable anymore to boot. We make the crest, he short shifts it into third and ride em cowboy again.
We turn around at the next intersection and I point out the CVs clattering like maltesers down the aisle. He raises his eybrows and shakes his head "can't hear a thing". I steal a sideways glance and sigh.
We do a hot lap past our house with the little laser at full noise, the clutch is beginning to pout a bit, we get to the next intersection and I say listen carefully for the CVs again. Nope missed it again.

So, we get back and he parks it. He haggles $100 or so off the price and says yep we'll take it, be back in 1/2hr. Yeh right says me.
Sure enough back he comes with big wad of folding stuff and the pair of plates off his other junker under his arm. He pays, screws them on and off they go with another big handful (footfull?) of revs and a smell like bad feet.
Phew, it survived.

Got that on Sunday afternoon...

I had an email from a chap in SA willing to get on a plane and drive it back home..he offered me $9500 max ..he reckoned due to his costs of flight ticket/rego transfer/stamp duty etc he couldn't offer me anymore...plus he said he was looking for a younger model with the bosch kit at that price anyway ..but liked the alloy wheels !

I hate selling cars privately..no chance of me trading anyway..will be leaving Oz soon !!

Sound like typical scrappies. I see them at auctions, old Jap 4 tonners, blowing smoke, sagged on one side, holes in the deck, owners dressed in tatty bib & brace overalls and a blue singlet, boots without laces and a greasy towelling hat. Go up to pay after the auction and whilst the yuppie buyers are on their mobiles arguing with the bank about why their credit card has been refused, the scrappies are pulling out wads of cash and passing thousands over the counter. Saw one pass $15000+ over at an auction one day, no trouble at all.

seen a couple of classics come through the yard since i started, worst ones are fitters, picky as hell

great 2003 landcruiser turbodiesel wagon, full history and looks a million dollars, just let down a lil by 167,000km...... fitter jumps in, takes it for a spin and says "bit of a clunk in the back end"...... now i've driven it around town, done a couple of hundred k's on the highway in it, and i know damn well it doesnt clunk, but at least he's not stupid..... "but hey, you expect something after 160,000km"

another joker whinges about $49990 for a 04 landcruiser kakadu V8 with "high" 134,000km, everything short of a sahara..... simply flicked him the local rag, told him if he didnt like it, go buy the one with 150,000km for $61k..... said i'd even chuck in the car kit and UHF if he wanted to pay $61k we had.....

biggest stunners are the tossers who want $5k hiluxes and oldschool holden 1 tonners...... cheapest damn car on the lot is an AU wagon with 80,000km on it..... do they seriously think they're gonna find a tonner out the back?

I had a guy email me a few years back when I was selling a Defender. Offered me nearly $10K less than my asking price. His email said something like "...mate redbook says it is only worth $X so that's all I can offer you...". Two weeks later it was sold and I emailed him back to let him know that it went for the full advertised price. At least he was good enough to email back to congratulate me.

Now a story from the other side, a buyer,.
Years ago the Missus and I were looking along Parramatta road for a cheap clunker to get us to work and back (Windsor to Sydney, Balmain.)
Spotted a "Cheap" looking VW in a cheap and nasty car lot, took it for a drive, was rough but ran well and would be OK for what we wanted it for.
Got back to the yard and the saleman says what did we think and make him an offer, so I ran the car down and offered him $300 for it.
He rubbed his chin and grumbled a bit and then said. Tell you what Sonny, give me $100 and its all yours.
Crikey (being polite here) I nearly fell over, shoved the 100 bucks in his hand, I asked why and he said if it was sold for $300 he would have to put 3 months warranty on it.
Being a Mechanic that didn't phase me, BTW the next time I started it (in the car yard) was the LAST time it ever started off the key, but it lasted 2 years and then I gave it to my Brother, it only lasted a week with him, honest truth, Regards Frank.

Why do people get sooky, when offered a silly offer, I deal with this stuff all the time, and you'd be suprised how many accept silly offers, i.e. my P38 for 4k;)

I've only had good stories.

Sold my County to a guy from interstate who bought a one-way airline ticket. At 3pm he arrived and took it for a test drive and by 4pm I had my cheque and transfer papers and he was driving interstate to take it home.

He called a few days later to ask some questions and to say how much he liked it.

I've not gone sooky yet !..but if someone said 4k for mine it would be close to becoming a sooky moment...

I know its April 1st but I'm sure Fluffy is worth more than that !...I'm willing to haggle a bit ..but not by 50%...an old 91 classic went for 10k at the local car fair last week with 300,000k's + on the clock..

I would hope to get at least 15k for my old girl ..or is that still unrealistic ? :(

Its a pain selling as everybody wants to buy it cheap but sell dear. Put your self in both positions. If you were buying would you not try and get it cheaper? In reality Discos and RRs do not have a high re sale value anyway.
Just set your price and don not budge if you do not want to sell cheaper, but also make sure the price is realistic. I have sold a few cars and bikes and if I have a price in mind I make this clear at the start of negotiations and what I will accept as offers. Most of the time as the prices have been right there have been no issues, even though they will still make a lower offer.

It had a new engine , gearbox , exhaust and tyres...very clean for a 300,000k rangie..the swine parked it next to Fluffy at the car fair..he was getting far more interest than I was

New owner drove it away after just 2 hours at the fair..

I sat there for 4 hours and had a few jokers saying that P38's are worth less than older classics anyway and I should re think my valuation !

It may be worth 15k it may not depends on who has what to part with, mileage etc. I would not pay $10k for 91 RRC with 300k on the clock. I looked at one a couple of weeks ago with 200k on the clock and heaps of options for $7k.

Selling the Ford Escape. Had a call from a Pakistani gentleman on Sunday who offered me $2,500 less than the asking price without even seeing it. Unbelievable.

Wife once sold a car to a guy who caught a taxi over to see it. Bought it there and then for cash. He had to otherwise he had no transport as the taxi had been paid and gone. It wasn't until he left that swmbo realised she had no transport to pick up the ankle biters from school. Guess who needed a taxi then. :o:angel:

If you are not desperate stick to your guns as there are always opportunists and dealers that pose as buyers to get cars cheap. I normally come up with a figure I want and what I could take worst case scenario that I could live with. I am assuming that yours is a P38 and should get somewhere between $10 and 18k depending on options, kms etc. Most P38s are cheap because the have done high kms.
Hope you get your price. Do a bit of on line research and see what they are selling for at both ends of the spectrum.

What are you guys complaining about LOL

In Russia, the smartest car in town, GWM black 4x4 dbl cab ute with canopy. Put the for sale in the window, no phone number, no one has a phone anyway. Wake up the next morning and theirs 24 armed GAI ( traffic police) standing around it kicking the wheels etc.

For sale 400 000 roubles, I was offered 250 000, sold, no option, I think it was the fingers on the AKs that convinced me.

Thats sounds completely normal to me... I think you will find that everyone values vehicles differently. and your loss is always goin to be someone elses gain. It's fair in the end as you have to buy and sell all the time. Good when you buy and bad when you sell. But after a sale you generally buy again so its your turn for the good side of the bargain.

I often offer much lower than asking and at the same time I generally will sell an item much lower. So its not like I am a stooge!

Most P38's are cheap beause they're crap sorry to say. I know many people who have been burnt by them over the years and personally wouldn't have one myself, bit too hi-tech for me :(. if i dared to venture into one, post 99 XA series whatever it's called would be the go.

Although on the other end of the coin (my old man) has been more than happy with his 98 4.0 P38 Rangie. Dad's had a few issues more to wear than reliability and nearly has 200K on the clock now and strangly more reliable than the 88 Hi-Line he replaced it with (I parted it out after the goose who bought it smashed it).

well...... had a guy come back in today after test driving a turbo cruiser wagon last week...... quite a nice bloke and he and i used to get around in the same kinda circles, so we both knew the score

he came in, said g'day, chatted a bit as he looked over the wagon, asked if we'd take X amount for it, ($500 less than we'd told him was the lowest we'd take) i asked my boss, went back and said sorry but no, we wandered around the lot for 10 minutes, he asked to speak with my boss, said he'd go and think about it, came back 10 minutes later with a bank cheque for the price we gave him, and he walked away happy

i've got the detailer kid going over it with a fine tooth comb making sure its clean for him, mightve taken a lil time, but we gave him our best offer, he didnt bust our balls over it, and he paid straight up, he made my day a lot easier, so i reckon i've gotta look after him

I wont sell a car again, trade in, couldn't deal with the crap:D
now you should understand why car dealer's are so bolshy.....i was a dealer for 22 years, what you describe was my DAILY experience, 6 days a week.....i retired young-ish, utterly burnt out by the public, after a heat-attack at 35, a stroke at 50, followed by a complete nervous break-down at 55, all stress- related, as a result of dealing with motor vehicle sales....

I'm in the same price range as most of them..a couple of sellers really 'dreamin' with $21k for a 98 4.0SE P38 and another 99 4.0SE for $22k...I'll revise my asking price a bit if I don't get many takers during the next week or so....like I said..not desperate to sell it immediately

If you're not desperate to sell, hold out for your price. All you need is the one buyer, the right buyer, and they may not have seen the ad yet. Or, someone who comes to see the car might come up to your price after thinking about it.

I held out for a premium price when it came time to sell my three year old WRX (last of the series, pre-bugeyes). It had low kms and was in impecable condition. Redbook and private ads suggested 20-26k. I politely declined phone offers of 12k sight unseen and 14k dealer trade ins, and stuck to my 30k asking price (just over 70% of the original price).

I met the right buyer one night at a large well lit petrol station. He came in a turbo Liberty, with his WRX owning mate. After looking the car over (and knowing where to look), I was convinced they were serious enough to warrant a test-drive. The mate did the test-drive and practically sold the car for me. Then it fell down when his offer only went as high as 26k and I wouldn't budge.

They were still good about it though, the mate reckoned it was just a waiting game to find the right buyer, who would appreciate the pristine condition vehicle.

We said our goodbyes, and as I departed the servo, one last check of the rear vision mirror showed the guy running after me, waving his arms frantically. He'd made the decision to come to 30k, I took a deposit, and delivered the car to him the next day. His girlfriend was thankful they wouldn't have to spend any more weekends searching for cars, which most were thrashed, and the bloke was more than happy with his purchase.

Best I did was back when I was 17. Advertised an old valiant in the paper with no engine or box with best offer. Only had one call and the guy came round to look it over so I showed him everything I know on it and just said make an offer hoping for $100-$150 for it. He turned around and said could you live with $500:eek:. Instant sale:).
I had been given the car 3 months earlier and only work I had done was detail it till I could find an engine.
