View Full Version : D3 Heater performance

With the chilly mornings I have begun to notice that the performance of the heater in my TDV6 SE leaves a little to be desired. Is it normal to have to wind the heater up to 28 on both knobs to get some warmth in the cab or do I have a warranty issue? When you turn the knobs all the way to the right plenty of hot air comes out but at anything less than full blast it gets chilly. Engine temperature reads normal and the problem is still there after 30 minutes running. Climate control seems to work fine on cool as I've never needed to ajust temperature until now.

Mine was similar until I turned it off the full auto setting. I leave it on auto fan (one dot on the auto button) and manually open the vents with the buttons on the left.

Now I have no problems.

20 or 22 deg C setting on my temp controls seem to be fine on chilly Melb mornings (4-6 deg C) with fan speed on 1 or 2. If I set higher then I'd be roasted.

I'd say you have some sort heating problem.

That sounds like the case, my D2 would boil you if you left it on auto much above 20-21.

Try pushing the econ button. My guess is you still have the aircon engaged.
My does exactly the same as yours.....as it should, until you hit the econ button. Then you should find the heater is too hot.

Over the last few days I've tested mine again. The behavior has changed, and full auto works. You choose your temp and it sets it. It will now bake your food on the way home from the supermarket regardless of the setting of the auto button. Perhaps they quietly fixed a problem I didn't know I had at a service?

The AC is automatic. You shouldn't need to turn it to econ to turn it off.

Mine appears to be improving too, maybe a sticking door or something inside the heater assy??

This is my 4th discovery and trust me if you want your heater to work
PROPERLY you need to hit the econ button. Mine will also work on auto,
just not as well......don't ask me why, it just does. I just went for a drive
to double check my theory and there is a noticable difference. You are right,
in theory there shouldn't be but there is. I have a feeling the aircon does
remain active even when auto is on.....this is why your windows don't fog up when on auto.

Might be a sticky external temp sensor, your climate control works off this, well it does in the D2.

I always recommend leaving the system on auto to heat, as this ensures that windscreens don't fog up, as the air con removes unnecessary moisture from the air as the air heats up.

So, to heat, aircon on if any chance of condensation forming on the windows.

There is a known (minor) issue with the D3 heating system which I call the "cold feet syndrome"! Basically it doesn't pipe enough heat to the front passenger footwells when set to automatic mode. You can resolve this yourself by sending more air to the footwells with the manual buttons / fan control.

LR know about this, and as for nearly everything related to the D3 there is a software fix that cures the problem if you mention it to your dealer.

They've applied the latest software patches to your ECU then ;)
