Just tried starting my macbook, and I get a "folder" symbol with a question mark in it. Switch off and and start again, and I get a "prohibited" symbol...
I know there are a lot of Mac users on the forum....any clues? Fried hard drive perhaps? It made a clicking noies when trying to start.
It is only about 6 months old...not happy.

sounds like file system or hard drive
find your install discs, put disc 1 in cd rom turn unit on while holding "c" key down until you see the apple logo
when this loads, you will find a disc utility option on the menu. run it and try doing a repair disc process.
yell if it gets you nowhere...
if 6 months old it is under warranty, and you also have another few months to buy applecare and extend the warranty to 3 years..

Must be some mistake: Every Mac owner I've ever met, heard from or received the obligatory "you should 'a bought a mac" comment from have always lead me to believe that mac's never fail, just PCs!:D:D:D
Maybe it's some fiendish scheme of the PC God BG:o:o
But I do feel for you Mick. It's a bugger when this stuff happens.

I'm sure you can find something better on it but I'm too tired!

Thanks guys - giving that a go now. So far showing "invalid record count" and "invalid node structure" a number of times. I will let you know what happens.

OK - no good - so it's gone to a local authorised repairer - I have applecare as well - notwithstanding it's all covered by warranty. Guy said the disk is shot but they should be able to save my data etc. Should know within 24 hours or so...fingers crossed.

Just heard back re. mac....you were right Inc...hard drive. They are unable to recover any data. Should hopefully have it back by the end of the week. Hadn't backed up for a while so have lost some photos etc.

Bad news mate :( Hopefully the INC GOD can save some stuff. I use timemachine and it's great. It nags you if you haven't done a backup for ten days :)

time machine rocks, as does an external hdd connected to the airport - remote backup's happen at night for my powerbook....
all my photos I rip from memory card -> Powermac, then import form there to my powerbook.
I have 2 copies on 2 machines and upload to my dreamhost account at the same time (offsite backup) Dreamhost are cheap for bucket loads of offsite storage

Also, tell itunes to back up your photos onto your ipod. I won't delete photos off a camera unless it's on at least two places. IE... on computer and ipod at least.
