Early next week I am driving from Brisbane to Sydney.
If I give the "wave" to every Land Rover vehicle I Pass along the 900km journey, what percentage return do you think I will get ?
And which Landy type will have the highest return rate ?
Keep in mind I am in a P38 - the least waved at Landy on offer.
I'll give it a go and post my findings.

Don't like your chances :D
I've been driving around Queensland waving at every Land Rover on the road. I rarely get a wave back, more like a look that says, "Who is that idiot?" :)

I got a wave from a Defender coming home from Easter:D, spun me out as I rarely get waves from Disco's (what I drive) so to have the Defender initiate the wave was different.
Good luck, but I'm sure it won't be over 25%:(

The results will be interesting...I reckon 10%.
I'll be driving from Sydney to Smoky Cape this Saturday and will try like wise. I'll have a car full of potential Land Rover spotters on board so that I don't miss any. It's embarrassing when you get caught out: I was spotted and waved at by Lucy (one of the AULRO mob) when I was down in Nowra and I missed seeing him :oops2:.

I reckon you'll get a lot more if you're the one initiating than if you wait for people to wave at you.
Around Brisbane, I reckon in my series III i get a wave from 95% of other series owners, 80% of Defender owners, maybe 40% of Disco drivers, 5% drunken buggers in the city on a night out, and bugger all else from anyone - although i did get my first wave from a freelander the other day :o

If you get a 5% response I think you will be doing VERY well and they will mostly be older Landies.
Best of luck.

I try this going from mountains to Sydney on regular occasions and find it's a pretty poor response. I get maybe up to 2 discos every trip and about half of the defenders but that's it.
Mind you a guy in an old rangie has not started waving to me and I see him regularly so that's a start.
I don't think you will exceed 10% either. And when I drove up to grafton just before xmas I didn't see one deefer once out of sydney.

I think that the least waved at/by Land Rover without a doubt will be the RR Sport.
But you are right it is closely followed by the P38a and the current Vogue (what ever that is called), Disco owners (particularly D3) rarely if ever wave even though I drive a RRclassic and I think that Defender owners are so shocked to get a wave they are stunned to immobility.
Perhaps you should have an escort vehicle with a big sign "Land Rover Wave Following".
Then by the time you arrive the LR drivers will be primed.

Make it more complicated.
My guess is:
25% waving from any LR that looks like its heading off-road soon.
5% from LR clearly not heading off-road anytime.
1% by any LR thats driven by mum picking up school kids.
Double these figures if you initiate the wave.
If you flash your lights then wave, increase these figures by a factor of 1.7
and one more..
100% from the Police :o (waving you to pull over) whether you initiate it or not for weaving around not in control of your vehicle because of all your waving.
Heres one to start your trip with. :arms: good luck.:D

Ok girls and guys
I was out in ho har's deefer today and I actually had a disco 1 catch up to me on the gateway so they could wave at me :o then happily sat behind me. The disco was loaded up with recovery equipment and had a heavy duty camper so obviously they used it for it's intended purposes.

"Defender or Series" to "Defender/Series" around Melbourne and country VIC. - I reckon pretty much 100% wave rate if they spot you. :) On the other hand - "Defender or Series" to "any other LR including disco" - very low %. Defender to RR or Disco 3 - forget it, they are too busy enjoy the comfort... aircon, heating, seats etc.

My point exactly (and by you: much better enunciated :p(that word is for Ron))....that's why I will have spotters and as all three of them need LR identification training and two of those are feckless youths the "are we there yet" plea might be abated.

I'm new to the LR world and my fiance tried a wave at a couple of fellow disco drivers....only to get that look....who da what!?;)
I don't think that people in cars get it.....bike riders do it all the time. ...not usually the harleys, but most other riders would 'give the nod' and sometimes even wave of the hand.
look forward to the results...
Have a great trip anyhow.

In the 1960s and 1970s the Land Rover wave was alive and well (except for workers driving government owned Landies) then along came those stupid "hey Charger" ads for the Valiant car and the L-R wave went into decline.
It has still survived till now but I rather feel it will never be alive and well like "in olden days". :( :(

Seems to be alot of first time Land Rover owners around of late. Disco's and Rangies getting so cheap, they're popular with the hardcore scene. They do 'em up and use them, but they dont care for the brand or it's heritage etc. So they give a blank stare when you give 'em a wave 'cause they dont have a clue what it's about.:D:D:D

GET REAL !
I wave at all Land Rover products from my Sport and maybe once in fifty times I get a return wave, never from Disco's !
I have NEVER had a wave initiated from any Land Rover except the pretty young things driving their Sports to the ski fields. I don't think they know anything about Land Rover tradition. Maybe they are just more friendly !!!!

I live in an area where there are more discos and range rovers per square km than any where else in Australia and none of them know how to wave... (and none of them have been off the blacktop except to pull the horse float back to Centennial park... that was before EI) ... BUT saw a bloke in a Defender parked at the local bottle shop ..asked him if he was on the way to Cooma and sure enough he lived locally and he indeed was on way to Cooma.... if I waved at him - he might have known how to wave back.

Wave at defenders and series only. Sorry to say but the others seem to be a waste of time. For some reason you get the feeling that defender/series drivers just get the land rover thing.
Just wondering if the lifting of one of two fingers to signal was because you are too scared to let go of the wheel at speed and wave properly.
The bike rider nod is alive and well exept with harley riders but who cares about them anyway.
Iget really annoyed when Defenders don't wave back, I think how dare you drive one, no respect and all that. Or maybe it's not their ride. Either way a kneecapping is in order. Or is that a bit too extreme?

6th April 2008, 03:28 AM
I find the Landrover wave is just lifting your Right hand up from the steering wheel at the Thee O clock position with out letting go of the steering wheel with your thumb.
Around Nowra all us Defender owners wave to each other.
When I drive the 101 rover I only get a few waves as most rover owners do not know what it is.
Driving through Yawal RD at Nowra one day a convoy of Discos and the like was going the other way and the first one must have realised what a 101 was and the bush tele graph.....the CB radio told the others and the air horn and rover wave got a work out in short time.

We are about half way there, and SWMBO is currently driving.

Hardly seen any Land Rovers at all, but virtually nothing from the ones we've seen. One wave from a Disco pulling a horse float stopped at the road side.
Only seen one Defender while we were stopped.

Overall....pretty poor response !..zero to be exact..:(
Two RRS's driven by some young chicks on the M2..one was on the mobile and probably didn't notice me anyway !
Caught a glimpse of a RR Vogue on the M7..but don't think he saw me till it was too late and some trees blocked the view..
Didn't bother waving at a silver Disco on the back of a recovery truck !
Waved at another Disco near Goulburn ..but got a look of total surprise and she nearly drove of the road !
Even waved at an old couple overtaking me in their Rover 75..got a smile from the old girl in the passenger seat..
So ..the only wave I got during the whole trip up and back home..was from Ron when I left his house late on Tuesday evening...:p
Thanks Ron..didn't feel totally unloved after that !

A couple of times I drove my wifes car a Peugeot 505 [selling it this weekend], and waved at Range Rovers forgetting I was in her car instead of the Rangie. :wasntme: Got a blank wondering stare in response to my wave. :wasntme: Sometimes I have had a wave from a holden or something that I never drive, and wondered why, not recognising who waved. They probably forgot they were not in a Rover. Usually flash my headlights at Range Rovers and an odd Discovery, that I thought was a Rangie till I had a better look at it. Otherwise do not flash my headlights, but if I think quick enough would acknowledge any 4WD Rover who waved. Sometimes they passed me before I had a chance to collect my thoughts in order to respond, usually respond by headlight flash, though occasionally a wave. :wasntme: Just me, but I often go talk to any Range Rover classic owners in the same parking lot, or at least look over their Rangie. Sometimes talk to other Rovers, of the non Rangie varity, more likely a series Landrover if they park near me, or I am walking past them, especially if they look as if they go offroad in it--most city Rover owners think if they drive up a well graded, sometimes potholed dirt road like the one I live on, they are going off road. I do not mind this so much as it often means there will be cheap hardly used second hand Rovers for my family to buy down the track. Never purchased a new car in my life, always second hand. Let someone else pay the bulk of the depreciation is my moto :), John.

I think that is a self-preservation/security thing, if there is someone on a local road miles from anywhere and the only reason for it's existence is for the local properties. Then a return wave only comes from someone who should be there. Thieves and burglars never want to be recognised so never wave.
On the other hand, many farmers still have the old series Landy for running around on the property. The Land Cruiser is only for running into town etc so the wave may actually be a "Landy Wave"

One of the problems with RRs and Discos and particularly Freelanders, is that they are not sufficiently distinctive - Series, 90/110/Defender are very distinctive, in particular they are taller than almost any other cars, and are very different from other large four wheel drives, but RRs and Freelanders, and to a lesser extent Discos, are more difficult to instantly recognise, as they blend in to the rest of the traffic to a greater extent.
At least I tell myself this is why I often fail to notice them until too late.

As for RRS drivers, I waved at one the other month whilst driving the County, she just glanced back in my direction, pretending not to be seen. I pulled up beside her at the traffic lights and asked her for a ride. She floored it away winding up the supercharger, almost smoked up the 22's.
I eventually caught up, hard to do in an NA Isuzu.
I thought it might be the right thing to do too so I talked to her again this time I specified that I ment a ride in the car.
I got 1/5 of a wave before the supercharger wound up faster than the windows.

That's the LR spirit. If they don't wave back, hunt 'em down and talk about Land Rovers until they give in.:D

I wave at every landy, rangie, defer that I see on the road around here .... sad to say that i don't get a huge return rate. I even get my 3 y.o. daughter to wave, she is starting to recognise them.
This will not stop me though, I will continue to wave, i must say though that when you do get a return it makes my day (pretty pathetic life then hey). Ah, it's all fun .......
I drive mainly between the CBD and Patterson Lakes, I'm in a epsom green Disco .......

got the best wave ever to date. Heading out of Murwullimbah after our tour towards the Pac hway I spotted a 110 wagon heading towards us. As soon as they realised we were a defender the passenger starts waving enthusiastically, still 150 yards away then as we get closer the driver pitches in to help. Had to raise the rand off the wheel to return this one. A wave like that leaves a better feeling and lasts longer than any of that crap they were trying to sell us in Nimbin. Cheers guys, who ever you are you made my weekend.

Well I did my own survey on Monday this week and have uncovered a very sad fact.
While it seems that you can get waves from Series, County's and Defenders, the occasional RR classic or Disco and rarely from the later models. The drivers of any Land Rover model outside built up areas never wave at night.
In all my years of driving LR products I can never remember getting a wave from another LR at night where there were no street lights. Even driving a cross-eyed Series LR and approaching another cross-eyed Series LR no wave.
What is it about these nocturnal LR drivers?

I've noticed this too. I ended up thinking it was just me. Dunno why, maybe it's the debbil torch under my chin:twisted: while I wave, just to be sure they see me.

That sounds far to logical and simple a reason for it to be true and an extraneous variable not designed into the research methodology. :D :D :D

LR Wave? I've never seen it. But it was always standard practice with the several Kombis that I owned years ago (and still is). Once my kombi passenger said to me "Gee you sure know a lot of kombi owners". Some non "true believers" only thought we waved as we never knew when we might need some road side assistance.
I always thought a LR wave would be the right thing to do. So I'm in. And I drive a D2. And I hope I will not need roadside assistance.....

On the way home from work on Friday last week I got a late wave from a green Defender driver on Burwood Hwy crossing Warrigal Rd. He was driving a Defender 130 ute and I drive a white Defender 110.
For the most part I get a wave from Defender drivers but sometimes us drivers are just concentrating on the road so don't see other LR drivers until too late.

On a recent trip to the Snowys I waved to LR & other vehicles. I got return waves from most truckies & tradies & farmers. Some Defer drivers & Disco drivers also - even some D3s (however, many didn't). (I didn't wave to newish RRs as I didn't want to seem to be "sucking up". None of them initiated a wave.)
Best Wishes,

Hey Ho Hars,
Got back fine and dandy thank you.
I saw loads of D1s, D2s and a couple of D3s, a Rangie and a few Defenders coming back from Pomona. Initiated a wave to each of them to take out the bias:D and here are the results.........
D1s and 2s. About 1 in 25 wave:(
D3. Nada:(:(
Defenders. Small sample number but >60%:)
Rangie. I don't think he could even see me way down there at the end of his nose. I bet even his poo doesn't stink:p:p Only joking. There are some nice people out there in Rangies. They just don't seem to want to wave.:o
