"We know that a five-year deal is in place for Jaguar and Land Rover models to use Ford engines, with Tata indicating that this will be a longer-term commitment. Tata has also stated that it will keep British plants and job levels at both manufacturers safe until 2012.
However, it is believed that Tata/Land Rover has a deal in place with the Indian army to build thousands of Defenders for military use. This could see production of the classic Land Rover switching to a new hub near Delhi in order to satisfy extra demand."

Hopefully still the current shape Defender!

Tata will have a TDV6 & TDV8 at their disposal.

5 years of EU Defenders getting 2.4 Ford motors, to satisfy the terms of the contract and to appease the EU where I'm guessing anything over 2.5 gets extra tax.

Meanwhile, the colonial Defenders will race around with TDV6s across the sub continent, Africa and hopefully Australia. Unless you option it to TDV8 Auto.

Emissions laws will NEVER allow the return of the older style engines in ANY vehicle.

There is no way they will ever go back to an agricultural motor such as the 200/300Tdi, as they no longer meet emission standards in developed countries. Even importing the beasts (great as they may be) will not be possible.

Having said that, I hope the Defender continues in its present guise for many years to come.

It's funny, I often think people have a stuffed up view of India..

The brains trust, the workforce, etc... will (if they want it) allow Landrover aka Tata to build a world class product.

A product, built much more carefully than many of the poorly assembled versions from Solihull.

Don't discount that nation.... Or their ability to provide world class products.

Hmmm air cooled 2 stroke diesels....

I doubt the motor will be more powerful than the current Puma diesel. The drivetrain will need serious upgrading to cope with the outputs of a TDV6 for example.

The R380 gearbox is limited to 380 NM of torque.

geez fella's, it was a joke. I know what killed off engines like Nissan's TD42T......
But by the same token, they don't have emissions legislation on the sub continent like we do, and I can't see the Indian Armed Forces using the Puma engine, can you ?

the R380 isn't used anymore, it's now Getrag 6 speed ;)

I was speaking to an Indian fellow that I work with and he said that TATA was initially an Iranian Company...

Anyone else know anything about this?

Ps, he also said that they were very innovative and would probably be a good thing for LAnd Rover

AFAIK the tata family emigrated from iran many generations ago and still identify as Parsi and Zoroastrian. Goes to show how many different flavours of curry there are out there. Its nice that Landrover now has a parent company that can manage its own affairs. tata bought the truck or bus division of daewoo when it collapsed a few years back, and a brief look at the matchbox collection Tata Motors - Products (http://www.tatamotors.com/products/) that is the tata range (and considering the conditions of the main target market) i'm hopeful landrover can see a return to its roots and away from the production of highmargin poofter mobiles aimed at citywankers stuck in unrewarding lifestyles that are susceptible to the marketers' "escape" image that a 4wds have come to represent.
i understand there are bottlenecks in the production of the pugwort/jag v6/v8 diesels stemming from the sourcing of the graphite materials used in the block. im sure tata can get its hands on a lot of other suitable donks. they have done a lot of work with isuzu, and we all know how well they go.
Im not a mathematician, but if 70 million poms struggle to make 25,000 landies a year, perhaps 1,400 million curry munchers will be able to make 500,000 landies a year. thats a lot of carbon credits.
