Was outbid on ebay last week by Scrap merchant. It appears the SIIa I had my eyes on for parts (No engine, '67 ute.) was worth more as scrap. Fortunately the owner decided that he could not let it be mulched and turned into coke cans so cancelled the sale.:) I paid for it today. :D
It would appear that, with the mining boom, the cost of scrap metal has shot up too. (Especially ALUMINIUM). Be warned scap merchants are targeting old Land Rovers for their high Al content. If this keeps up we will no longer see the $500 ebay bargains and spare parts will become scarcer. Love your landie – it’s an endangered species

It used to be that the scrap value of the metal in a Landy was $350.00, with the value of metals going up it has to be more today.

So those people who think that the $500.00 for an old landy is exxy should try to buy 1/2 ton of aluminium and 1/2 ton of steel from the metals merchant!

There was a story in Restored Cars magazine recently about an auction that had just this problem. There were quite a few scrap metal merchants snappin g up the old cars just for the metal content .

Every now & then, I get a scrappy leave a card on my RR parked in the street .
The highest is $200 so far.

When I last sold some (useless) landie bits (completely mangles panels, dead blocks and cranks, etc...) the price was $3.50/kg for aluminium and $40/tonne for steel and cast iron.

Was a few years ago so prices have probably gone up since then.

Ben

Maybe the value I was given was based on a tonne of aluminium! Who knows?

Steel is now $80/tonne + GST.

Aluminium is now $1.60/kg + GST.

Copper is the winner at the moment, $3500/tonne.

Before I left Darwin in December, the local wreckers advised me to ensure that I took what I wanted from the 8 series Landy's that they had at "11 mile, Berrimah". This was because they were all going to the scrap metal yard for good cash and there would be no more Landy's there after a fortnite. :o:(

I'm told my $420 SIIa is probably worth $660 as scrap. Something very sad about such a lovely old beast being scrapped. All I can say is next time your tossing up whether you buy another donor/project vehicle - Do it! for all of us landy lovers. I read once that 85% of landies are still alive (although I think that figure is one of those unsubstantiated internet rumours!!) nonetheless if they keep turning them into coke cans we'll soon have nothing to scavenge and we'll be left with $110 door tops from Taiwan..:(

That's interesting - it's gone up even more. today's quotes for metals as a comodity from MetalPrices.com (http://www.metalprices.com/) (Converted using XE.com (http://xe.com) and 2.2Lbs:Kg) are: Aluminium $A3.09/Kg ($3090.00/Tonne)
Copper $A9.36/Kg ($9361.59/Tonne)
Steel $A616.77/Tonne(Although that is the metals in ingots not as scrap.)

An example is todays spot price on scrap steel $A169.21/Tonne

So even if there is only a 1/4 ton of scrap aluminium in a Landy and assuming a scrap value 1/4 the price of ingot it would still be worth $195.00

So don't park your project on the street looking like it is abandoned. :nazilock:

Whats the issue here?

I have a perfectly good series here, no one wants to buy it, if a wrecker offers the right amount it'll go.

A few years ago I spied a S IIa in a metal merchant, he wanted $1000 to part with it.

Guess what my answer was?

They're cars not puppies, but if you want to adopt another one there are heaps in the marketplace.

I think my point is if they keep mulching the only "heap" will be at Simsmetal.
Your proabably right though Dobbo . Call me a bleeding heart but I just can't bear to see them mulched.

Thanks. Hmm either aluminium has gone down (unlikely) or we only got $1.50/kg for ally. But what I definitely do remember is the price was the same even though the panels had paint and bog on them - which makes an old series even more valuable!!! :D

A series would easily have 3/4 tonne of steel ($60) - including engine, axles, gears - and 200kg of ally ($300).

Ingot price is alot more, the prices I have are for scrap.

Copper I am probably out as it has been a while since we sold some scrap copper.
We scrap alot of aluminium & steel at work.

Prices are based on what we get around Bankstown.

And Simmsmetal have never been one to hand over all the dollars that they get for scrap from the Chinese. The worst of all were Smorgon Steel when they had a depot in Nowra. They wouldn't get a set of scales for large items so you either gave then the scrap for nought or you had to go and get a before and after weighbridge ticket at $24 each. Takes the profit out of any recycling. But is good for their bottom line.

Wish I was getting $9 a kg for copper. Time to find me another scrappie. More like $5kg clean and $1.50kg for insulated.

I recently got $180.00 for a smashed up SWB ute back, seatbox & front guards.

Kept all the seatbox latches, gal trims & things, even though I don't need them I am sure they will come in handy one day...............

Thinking back, I got pipped at the post for a Series 2 on Ebay about 5 months ago by a scrappy.
Had a nice straight ute roof & a few other bits I wanted at the time, sold for $190.00.

I contacted the scrappy with my interest in the roof & bits, he said sure for $200.00 I could take the roof & bonnet.
Didn't collect it, dirty cheap mongrel...

Can we give an infraction to Dobbo for "lack of a LR soul" ?
