Hi All,

Friend of mine has a 130 that developed a leak at the shaft on the front of the pump.

Leak then fed fuel into the timing belt compartment and escaped out of the inspection hole at bottom.

Has anyone else had this problem with the Bosch VE on a 300 Tdi and if so can the front seal be easily replaced?

BTW the vehicle was running on B100 but before you all get carried away and blame it on that, I have run B100 in a number of Bosch VE pumps for a very long time without any problems. As far as I know, pretty much any VE after 1992 has viton seals and can handle Bio.

Sounds expen$$ive!

He needs to know why the seal failed.

Is the shaft worn in the area of the seal lip, from dust, mud or other foreign matter? I fit an elbow fitting to the drain in the bottom of the timing cover, and run a clear hose run back to an inline fuel filter near the brake booster.

Is the front bearing in the pump worn from excessive timing belt tension? Rover changed the timing belt tension to a lower value than that given in the workshop manual - though it is generally thought that the reason for this was to reduce deflections of the timing cover and pulleys that cause the belt to track off and wear.

As you said, if it is viton, the seal should not have deteriorated from contact with the fuel.

Edit; The seal is removed from the front of the pump. It could probably be replaced with care, without removing the shaft.

The following diagram from the Bosch Technical Instruction manual shows the cut-away assembly. This is the ve pump with electronic diesel control, but the section you are interested in is the same as our 300Tdi.
