Gentlemen (also ladies),

A similar thread to the one about the belt tensioner, but slightly different and Idon't know what the deal is with hijacking other peoples threads so I figured "i will go the safe route and make my own."

300TDi keeps shredding serpentine belts. First time at the top of a big hill, second time was when I tried to put the spare one on, at the top of the same hill. 3rd time on the way to work, slightly rainy. Was told that the PAS pump or the water pump (shame on me, I can't remember!) was buggered, so had a recon one put on. That was about 4 months ago. Shredded another belt yesterday (well, slowly, over about 3 weeks. It finally let go when - wait for it - going through a mud puddle, in the rain. Am I just imagining this pattern?) And yet another one this morning after I replaced it last night.

OK. So it has 7PK1595 belt, unfortunately the Disco is at home (where I'm not) so I can't see if the tensioner is the right one, as mentioned in the other thread, but I do remember hearing that the tensioner had been "fixed" at some point - no mention of what was wrong with it (maybe a bearing?).

The belt looks as if it has simply skipped a groove on a pulley, I suspect its the water pump - that is the one I'm looking at, right? The top-rightmost pulley, the first one to the right of the tensioner (when looking from the front - where else would you look from?). Now then, on the water pump the belt is at the front of the pulley, leaving the rearmost groove exposed. On the other pulleys, the frontmost groove is exposed. This leads me to believe that it is indeed this pump which is buggered.

Apologies for my non-technical words, I know enough about cars to look and see if something isn't quite right, not enough to fully diagnose the problem and tell other people about it...

Any ideas, confirmations of my theory or other advice (apart from buy a V8 - believe me, I considered it!)

Kim

Check all the pullies for in/out movement.
It's usually the power steering pump which develops a lot of end float & chews out belts.

Also check to see if the tensioner is running true. By that I mean have a look at the tensioner where it pivots against the half that is fixed to the engine. Between the two parts there is a black plastic shim which prevents the two halves rubbing together, it may be worn paper thin or even worn through on one side. This will allow the tensioner pulley to run out of line and forces the belt to run against the lip of the water pump pulley and destroy the belt. Well that what happened to mine(Can you understand my ranting)
Also the water pump check for sideways movement if it has replace it now not later I have seen one let go without warning and they don't leak or weep coolant they DUMP it. This particular one had the bearing let go and the actual pulley had just about separated from the pump.

ah i have looked atthe tensioner once before and thought it looked a little iffy. i've also been pointed in the direction of another thread on here which talks about the dayco belts having rounded grooves, where the rover engines are supposed to have sharper grooves.

the water pump has maybe 2-3mm (3 at the *most*) in and out movement, didn't notice any sideways wiggle. i shall check all 3 things out tonight, thanks

By the way if it is the tensioner don't go Genuine, get a Dayco APV 1004 tensioner. I got mine from Colrain but bearing places should be able to get them as well, cost me about $93 from memory. If you have a look at the back of the genuine ones they are stamped DAYCO.

I have asked this question before but have never got a reply, so I'll ask again.;)

Is the V8i tensioner the same tensioner as the APV 1004?

Fank oo.

No. The D1 V8 uses ERR3440

APV1004 = ERR4708

Up to 1998, the P38A uses ERR3562
The 99 onwards P38A uses ERR6439

The D2 uses different ones yet again.

Thanks. Right. Now, is there a Dayco equivalent for ERR3440 then?
