I needed some parts today immediately, normally I would have ordered them from the usual British 4WD but unfortunately even overnight delivery was no good.
So with condom in hand I went to an... independent/dealer. What would have cost $66 ex British 4wd cost $132.79.:(
Though I try not to sook about things like this, what pees me off are the opportunity costs - the $66.79 of diesel, or a bottle of hendricks, or the russian mail order bride, inter alia, that I could have had...
So I direct my question at people with inside knowledge - does LRA standardise parts prices and what is the margin retailers throw on them?

Sorry but the condom will not help!
LRA are so good at "shafting", you would be lucky getting out with your wallet in tact!
It is a know fact that if you are silly enough to buy a Land Rover product, you are also silly enough to be "shafted" and think it is normal .....
The wise people shop around, that is why LR is so expensive :)

Well my last landrover purchase - top radiator hose for the Freelander.
$150 + shipping from British 4wd
$130 + shipping from 4WDs in Melbourne
$103 in total from the local stealer.
So - just goes to show that you can risk not taking the franger with you.

not that i care, but although it was between 47 and 27 bucks cheaper locally for you, how much time did you lose in getting it locally?
ie: would it have been cheaper to have it direct shipped to your address than messing around going out and getting it?
and b92 etc, what is the answer?

I set out to purchase a specific kit with a designated part number but was told that that wasn't possible and every single little bit (ie o rings etc) was sold separately to me at exorbitant cost - eg, ONE o ring cost $5.85.

And Repco, Bursons, Autobahn and Supercheap were just around the corner...?????.......$5.85 would of bought a bag of 10

The simple answer is no - 25c to ring the stealer - the next day he rang me to say it was in and then about $2 to drive 4km to the stealer and 4km back to pick it up. If it were shipped from the other suppliers - I would have the same fuel cost to drive to the post office or courier depot to pick up because I would not have been home when it would have been delivered.
The other advantage was that the stealer carries current stock - much to my surprise Landrover have got rid of the rediculous vulcanised junctions (the bit that had failed) in their radiator pipes and now have proper metal T pieces with real clamps. The ones from the aftermarket suppliers were all earlier stock.
There is another thread that also reflects that on occasion the stealer can surprise with pricing.

These days you mention the word Landrover and ears ***** up and all of a sudden they think they are tapped into the golden goose.

What annoys me is some price comparisons in relation to size/materials etc.
I ordered today among lots of parts to get my gear box back on the road, a new air filter...big steel tube full of cardboard & rubber ring, large box it comes in $25.
The rather small rubber dump valve that fits on the end of the 300TDI air box $31.25 it fits in a match box almost, so go figure the value difference in the price.:mad::mad:

More likely to be able to source the air filter from some other source. The matchbox size dump valveI would expect to be a bit more difficult to source from elsewhere:cool:

Agreed it isn't always dearer from a stealer... i remember a year or so back everyone with a fender was talking about the cup holders that fit on the transmisison tunnel... they were looking at imports for around $90 compared to the $110-120 from the independant aussie suppliers... then i went and grabbed 2 from the stealer at $77 each ;)
On the otherhand... i went and priced a new 100a alternator for my fender, ended up getting for about $100 cheaper than the best price i could find through my landy mechanic.
Just shows that you really need to shop around on almost every part you purchase :(

A number of the parts I've seen being sold by aftermarket suppliers are branded Allmakes. Many people have doubts about some of their stuff and would rather pay the extra (if any) for genuine.
It may be hearsay but the inconvenience and extra labour costs of doing it twice makes any savings on parts vanish.
I've found LR to be comparable in most cases and better in some.

Well
Just sent my 06 Defender in for an axle seal (**** itself at 58,000kms!??), alarm and other electrical gremlins (no brake lights) and the handbrake.
Will warrent seal and electrical stuff. NOT the handbrake cable as it is a 'wear and tear' item therefore not warrented!!!!
Price for cable from RoverParts = $72.60
Rover Dealer = $180.67 $300.98 Fitted!
Told them not to bother - also mentioned that my previous handbrake had lasted in excess of 200,000kms! He seemed un-phased! GRRR. It has rusted, and therefore must have been exposed to water!!!?? WTF.
Rover are just un-real like this.
Got my $$$ worth though -called RoverCare this morning, and sent the bloody thing to the dealer on a truck so....l feel a little better about things!
Ah. Feel better now!

My wife's 2005 Forester had a major service (2 year/50,000km - even though it only has 37,000km on the clock) today. I wished they'd greased the pole before reaming me.
$750! Ruddy hell!
And she wants a new one!
You can see why I drive an older Rangie I can service myself.
