mine died recently and I replaced it with a presolite/leece-neville universal alternator that I had on parts rangie. Bit of fiddling to get the wiring right as I know nothing about car electrics. I don't know much about the quality but it seems to work OK. Others may be able to comment.

Cheers,
Pete

Here is a diagram of the alternator DP used:

ALTERNATOR SERIES 15 (http://www.dg2k.co.uk/ALT16.htm)

The problem lies with the top holes - 200tdi (as you know) uses the one on the left - GMH & Ford use either the center hole or the rhs. Bosch actually list a replacement in their world index, BX21816B, but as to whether or not there are any in Australia is the question. Whether or not a magna alternator would line up in a 200 tdi is a big question too.

magna does fit, you only have to lengthen or cut the steel tensioning bar.
i cut a section out, like a v, then bent and rewelded bracket. alternator was a 60 a from magna.
check bosch catalogue for mountings, thats how i found mine.
fred smith wrote down the part number on a clipboard hanging on his wall just outside the office.
