I'd have to say if I was buying one today I'd seriously look at the GME TX3440. seems like it would be real easy to install. Ozzy company and 3 yr wrty too.

Too many options out there to advise without knowing your needs.

If plain and simple also means lower end of cost scale, then I'd say look at any of the cheaper GME or Uniden sets.

I bought and fitted a GME TX3440 a couple of weeks ago. Very happy with it so far.

The main body is very small so you can mount it right out the way. There is an extension lead for the handset so its pretty useful.

All of them are ine. if you keep your cost down you genrally gte a simper set up.

Also look at your installation site as some vehicles can be a bugger to work out where to put it. So things like the Gme with all the buttons on the microphone could be good or one of those remote face units.

Alternatively a very simple way of going is a handheld ith an external aerial.

This is a 5 watt unit, easily attach an external antenna, and has a lapel mic/speaker which works great. Battery life is brilliant (and you get a second battery anyway, never used mine). Has scan function and repeater. Nothing to compare it to, but range seems pretty good to me - even without external antenna.

Wow your right!. I didn't realise that just screws straight out I thought I had made a mistake when I bought the 78. Now I'll have to work out something for an external aerial. What plug do you get for it?

The UH078sx is a neat little handheld - my only disappointment is that there's no headset for it. (Uniden used to say the VM-75 was the VOX headset for it, until they found out they don't work together.)

Just a note on power: 5W is it's max, it'll also do 1W and 0.5W on 'LO' - great for conserving power when you're in convoy.

I've had no problems using it in the cabin with an external antenna, though the controls and display are a bit too fiddly when driving (eg. backlight's auto-off feature, and small buttons.)

Xavie, it's an SMA connector. If your antenna cable has the common BNC connector, buy a SMA-BNC adapter from a radio shop. (I got mine for $12 from Andrews Communications).

I have not needed to buy a set for years, but a couple of comments may be useful.

1. In my experience, I rarely, if ever, use any advanced functions - just use it on a single channel (not always the same one), so these would have little influence on choice.

2. I have experience with Uniden, GME and Phillips. All work equally well (see below) and almost the only problems have been with microphones - so it is worth looking for one that can use a generic microphone as one special to that model will be much more expensive and may not be available in a few years.

3. The maximum legal power for UHF CB is 5w, and given a halfway decent antenna, this will get you the same range (line of sight) as higher power.
Even handhelds, often with a power of 2w or even less, usually have pretty much the same range with the same antenna - their lack of range is usually the result of the antenna being designed for convenience rather than performance.
The only reason for having higher power is if you plan to talk over the top of other users, which is hardly polite (apart from being illegal), and in any case is usually irrelevant in the bush. No approved set will be higher power, and while you will probably get away with using an unapproved set with higher power, if you use the power for its only purpose of talking over the top of others, you will lose friends, and sooner or later someone may lodge a complaint.

4. Several of my sets (two cars, tractor, header, spares) came from Cash Converters or similar places, and were about half the price of new ones and have given no more trouble.
