View Full Version : Reliable vehicles

Ever had one of those vehicles that just go and never have problems?

We have two.
A 2002 AUIII Falcon SR and,
a 1997 Discovery SE7 V8.

I have to say that after three Jaguars, "marking their territory" and costing $$$$ to maintain, the Discovery is a breath of fresh air!

It does not leak oil, never runs hot, does not miss a beat, does not use much oil, runs beautifully and has not given the slightest trouble.
Yes I paid top dollar for it, but it IS a fantastic motor car.
The only money I have spent on it was a Vacuum advance retard unit, snorkel, big bore exhaust and engine saver.
Wife and I have decided it is a "Keeper". In other words, we will have it until it falls to bits :-)

The Falcon is another. In 5 years it has blown two light bulbs!

So, how many others in this forum have been lucky with their vehicles??

Cheers,
Ron

I had my 1997 Rodeo for 5 1/2 years and never had any trouble at all from it.

The 1994 Discovery is going well but have only had it for 18 months or so. Bit early to call.

Gday Ron, i would have to say the best and most reliable car i ever owned was a VH Commodore, had it 8 years and ran like a dream, i was in my 20's and yes i gave it a hiding aswell

Had the disco for four years, and been absolutely perfect only prob has been the Transfer Case Oil Leak. It does not leak oil (much) and just keeps going, Not bad for a car thats done 240k's. Totally changed my perception of Landrovers.

We've had two Mazda 121's (Bubble's) over 8 Years, the first one got written off in 2002, but they both just kept going. Regular Servicing and Fuel.

My EL Fairmont Ghia on the Other Hand .....Don't get me started

I had a couple of reliable cars . First one was a 1978 Datsun 120y . It was probably the best car i have owned . the other one was a 1983 vh sl/e 308 . Only ever replaced tyres on it :D:twisted::angel:

My Freelander is one of the most reliable vehicles I have ever had - certainly more reliable than both my previously owned V8 discos.

I don't own it, but my parents own a 1998 300tdi disco... Done 350,000km and aside from having to change belts and what not, it is incredibly reliable and gets mostly neglected!... my car get's all the attention... it needs it otherwise it wouldn't keep going for long!

give me a break Ron,,,

Our '88 Brumby has done 100,000 kays,,
in the ten years we've had it( a family hand me down:cool:)
we've put in two alternators, two batteries,
half a dozen tyres, swapped the seats left to right, AND THATS IT---
it does go through RHS inner CV boots,, but,, we've let the last one go for a while,, 10-12 months later and its still just "clicking"

It STILL starts first time and STILL hoots down the road(read my earlier posthttp://www.aulro.com/afvb/general-chat/23781-galloping-brumby.html),,

really dunno where we'd be without it :D

Reliable vehicle :I had a toyota Hilux dual cab 2.8 diesel 96 had it at 200000 and sold it at 315000 not a dollars spent on any mechanical faults just changed the oil and oil filter at 5 and 10000 kms and only put tyres on it.

Unreliable Vehicle: Ford maverick or nissan patrol 90 model got it at 90000 kms sold it at 100000 kms nothing but trouble gas system playing up head gasket problems and fuel petrol issues didnt want to run and when it did by the gallon.
will never buy a petrol patrol again other wise the thing was great.

Feroza. Good on fuel. 12 years old when gave it to a friend and 220,000 km's. just before I got rid of it the biggest issue was gear box was becoming notchy.

Sort of regret getting rid of it actually but it was just so bloody uncomfortable.

My Volvo 164 Rally car i had.
Built it, raced it for 8 years and only broke parts that were expected to....
Never broke down and never let me down...

Tally in the time i owned it.

Shocks..... every event
Ball joints... lots...
Lower front control arms.... belt lots...

Engine.... 1st one was the one that left the factory... then i wanted more HP.. so i built one up.... in 20k of stupid overreving it never died... and never used oil.
I ended up fitting a rev limiter as it was designed to redline at 6500 and i the taco showed 8000 alot.... there is no use in over reving.. your out of the torque band, but............... some times grabbing another gear is just a waste of time......:)

It depends what you call reliable.
Normal wear and tear of parts I would not call un reliable.
How you look after it has some impact.
Reliable cars I have had :
HQ Holden Panelvan, 186 3 on the tree, just topped up with water and oil and boy did that cop a flogging.
LX SS Torana, only the diffs let me down but that was self inflicted.
1984 MK Patrol, damn bullet proof.
VH Commodore, very reliable, never had to spend any money on this car.
VT Commodore Wagon, very reliable only issue ever was a flat battery.
WK Statesman, so far so good. Central locking solenoid failed.
97 Disco tdi, very reliable a few recalls for warranty but nothing significant. Typical LR clutch cylinders.
2000 Defender, fairly reliable only stupid badly engineered problems like oil in harness and light switch.
1984 RRC, very reliable only wear and tear for a car of its age. CV joints were an issue.
XE Fairmont, fairly reliable.
Toyota BJ55, absolutely bullet proof.

Unreliable
1984 Mitsubishi Pajero, more form prro design and previous maintenance, head, gearbox. Very comfy seats though.
XD Falcon ute, nothing but trouble.

We have a 1987 Volvo 245 with over 550000 km on it. One auto transmission rebuild and one fuel pump replaced and a small area of rust removed in all that time.Paint work is starting to fail, but it still goes well and I expect it to last a little while yet.130man

These are the vehicles I've owned so far

1) Sigma Chrysler (reliable , although I only had it for a short time)

2) VL Calais with a 3.0 L Nissan Engine (Had problems with the Gear Box)

3) Ford Laser ghia Hatchback (was always overheating and refused to go with Aircon on ) Later I found out there was nothing wrong with the cooling system , it was just brake callipers that had seized around the Discs and it was causing the brake pads press hard on them , almost like driving with your foot on the brake result ->engine working hard and overheating all the time

4) Dihatsu charade ( reliable )

5) Honda CRV ( Reliable )

6) and Finally my Land Rover Discovery Tdi ( Reliable )

Hmm, reliable.

Owned a Toyota Corolla wagon. Didn't even put petrol into it. It was that good.

Didn't own it for a full week, got pinched from out the front of the house.

Subaru L wagon. Replaced gearbox and clutch after a couple of years, but knew that was coming when I bought it. Other than that, one CV and the fuel pump needed a whack with a hammer every once in a while.

Only problem was that everybody else hated it. One time some one broke in and snapped off literally everything inside and outside the car that could be snapped off. Another time someone ran into it so hard that it was turned 90 degrees from parked outside the front door, to backed up against the front door. Eventually some fool ran up the back of it and I bought a Land Rover.

I bought it because it came with a full year of rego and cost almost nothing, and only planned to keep it for a year, but it just wouldn't die.

Cheers

Renault 12 - not reliable
Datsun Bluebird - very reliable
Datsun 120Y - reliable, but could overheat
VW Beetle - not reliable
Toyota sprinter (AE86) - very reliable
Hyundai Lantra - very reliable
Holden Frontera V6 - reliable in the short term, but antipating auto probs
Holden VT - very reliable
Subaru H6 (initial) - very reliable
Subaru H6 (current) - very reliable
LandRover Disco TD5 - reliable... except for the bits I've played with!
LAndRover IIa ute - unreliable but very modified.

My 2 cents worth....

VW1500 beetle - very reliable, as a uni student bought it with lots of Km and it just went and went (had it regularly serviced)
Patrol G60 - bulletproof and absolutely reliable; went all over the place, including Uluru
Cortina TD 4.1L - unbelievably badly put together; bought it new and sold it before the warranty ran out, it would have sent me broke
Mini Moke - great fun but a few problems
Renault 12 Virage - magnificent car, had it for lots of Km, just went and went
Honda CRV - another reliable piece of engineering
Alfa 33 broke down on average once every 3 weeks. I was my had-to-have-an-Alfa-once-in-my-life car, and I now have it out of my system.
Morgan 4/4 Series 1 (1948) a bit dicky, but it was over 50 years old
Morgan 4/4 1981 - a sweet thing that started first time every time and brought a smile to the dial just going for a drive
Citroen CX 2400 Pallas - bought it with high mileage, and it needed fairly regular attention, but was sheer pleasure to drive. The faster it went, the better it rode and handled
....
a few others that made no real impact
....
Now have an 83 Skyline 2.4L as my daily driver - bought it for $2K as a stopgap measure, with 160K km on it, now has 263K km and it just won't die
2000 Td5 110 goes well but has oil in the harness which will need attention soon (not happy!)
BMW 323i E36 - no problems at all; beautifully engineered

So generally, I have had a variety of vehicles over 30 years and most have been reliable. I am no mechanic, and believe in preventative maintenance

As a young lad in the RAF I was always driving up and down the country most weekends and needed something reliable..so I bought a 1967 Vauxhall Viva at an auction for 15 pounds !!..had done 20,000 miles and was an ex police car..came with 1 years tax and MOT as well.

In 3 years and about 80,000 miles later..it never let me down :D

Just the usual oil changes and spark plug cleaning ..and it never broke down or failed to start..even in the deep snow of a scottish winter , we'd have to dig it out and defrost the door locks ..but it would always start first time..we did start to think it might have been possessed ..sold it to an RAF mate when I got posted overseas for 25 pounds ..and it lasted another 2 years until the drivers side floorpan fell out when he was doing 50mph on the motorway..:o..it was scrapped after that with about 130,000 miles on the clock ..he got 10 pounds from the scrappy as well..

Most unreliable has to be a 1982 Rover SD1 2600..:o..it cost me a fortune to keep going..
Sold that to my brother and he's still not talking to me ! :p

Had the 85 Isuzu county for 12 years, 520,000 on clock.
Had normal bits wear out but it has never let me down. Even when I blew the transfer case bearings I still managed to limp home.
Our Rav 4 is 6 years old, and not one single thing has ever gone wrong in 130,000. :D

Most reliable...
Datsun 240K - gave it heaps and took it all
Subaru Forester - brilliant to drive and never did a thing wrong anywhere
D1 - was great but the V8 was too thirsty
NG Pajero - many will laugh but I don't have a single issue with these, started, stopped took me everywhere I wanted to go and never gave a moments trouble in 4 years - so good a mate bought it and loves it (he's camping this weekend - sod!)
D2 - aftere fixing things others ignored no - problem, no leaks, but I must do the starter motor brushes, lol!
Wrangler - well don't get much more basic these days, fuel injection and that's about it!

not that you would of heard of them....

Rover metro GTI 1.4mpi, bought with 41,000 miles on at 3 years old sold with 170,000 miles on 5 years later with £0 spent 1 radiator and 1 subframe mount replaced under warranty... wicked car that was evilly quick ex rover car that i think was 'played' with would wheel spin in 3rd gear and used to do 99mph in 3rd 120 mph in 4th before having to go into 5th! bugger in the wet tho trying to keep traction in 3rd and 4th gear.... oh also got 56mpg too at 90mph (not that i ever went over 70!)

rover 220gsi bought at 62,000 miles, sold with 250,000 miles after 1 gearbox cause i ran it for 30,000 miles with no oil in... and a head gasket that weeped oil and i was fed up of cleaning (total cost £250!) oh it got through a few tyres too... wickedly quick also and handled like it was on rails... faster you went the lower it got... always wanted a turbo one in case anyone has one for sale... im sure they came here!

now im on the td5 disco, 1 oil pump bolt during a service and the oil in the harness plus a temperamental instument cluster and 'something' wrong intermittently with the engine / turbo / egr etc etc.. still runs tho :) and runs well

Thanks

I had a 98 Holden Frontera for 10 years, just recently sold it. Sad to see it go as it never once let me down, in ten years it started first time every time, only spent minimal dollars on it for general service stuff. Prior to that I had a VN commondore for about 10 years and apart from 1 alternator and a fuel pump it never stopped either and I tried to kill it on numerous occassions.

However, I once owned a Rover Vandenplas (yep, just like James BOND) it used to break down even if i just looked at it. Yet I still loved it coz it was different. I've had my Disco for about 12 months, replaced the fuel pump recently but everything else seems to be going alright (touch wood - my head)...

A 1964 volkswagon beetle gave me a good run in my early years as did a Datsun 120Y station wagon.
A G60 Nissan patrol was tuff as they come and uncomfortable as it was soft top and rode poorly,so I sold it to get a Defender with power steering and aircon(the aircon has never worked for more than six months at a time)and I am always under the Defender.
I am still doing a long term love hate reliablity test with a 1960 Aussie manufactured Willys Jeep.
About Twenty Five years ago now I purchased a totally worn out and run down rust bucket Jeep.
In that time it has done a fantastic amount of miles(I cant give you the exact figure as it is now on its third engine and speedo since I have had it)
The jeep does breakdown once every now and then, but due to its simple design I always find a way to get it home under its own power.
Its still on its original transmission, but it does talk to you and has been reraced a few times.
The spring leafs are half worn through with wear and the bog is holding the body together and the fibre glass replacement mud guards.
The thing is it was nackkered when I got it through wear and tear and it will be around for more hard work in the next Forty Five years as it will not roll over a die due to simple design and cheap replacement parts with the great off road ability in its designed roll.
I know of a 2a Landrover with a Holden red motor........been around the world three times , just replace the motors as they wear out and the thing keeps going.

I don't think I have ever had a really reliable motor :( , the nearest would be a Mitsi L200 that had done just shy of 380,000 k's when I 'traded' it and my old V-dub which had done about as many in miles (I came across it several years ago, still looking the same as it did when I sold it off :)).

I think mine would have to be a 78 200b wagon. Purchased off my brother in law as he was going to scap it, rebuilt the motor and then drove it for years.
Dont know about reliable but I over heated a 186 in a HR Holden, it was night time and when the bonnet was lifted the engine bay just glowed red (ever looked at a turbo glow red, get the picture), filled it back up with water to cool it down, fixed the radiator and drove it for 12 months more. Bet ya cant do that with a modern motor

SWMBO's GU Patrol ute has just clocked over 280,000km towing horses and farm work and general run around/run everywhere vehicle and we have had to change a fuel transfer pump for the second fuel tank (under warranty) and that's it. One set of brake pads, two sets of belts (cautionary) one battery and fuel and oil.
Bloody brilliant. The GQ (petrol) was just as good, too.

I do have to change a rear axle seal when I get a chance, it's started to weep and is a pain in the backside being a semi-floater. (exxy bearing kit, etc)

Some very interesting stories in this thread :D

Looks like Subaru, Honda and Toyota build goos units!

I had two Subaru Sherpa's, until recently.
One for daily driving and a yellow one for future spares.
The little red one was a beast :D
Cheap to run, could do 120kph and was a ton of fun.

I sold it last year, then repainted the yellow one and sold it to the kid next door for a paltry $400. I noticed two weeks later that it was making horrid rattling noises, so I queried him about it. He told me that the oil light won't go off until 5 minutes of driving! (Obviously a stuck pressure relief valve)

I was horrified  but obviously it was too late, the damage had been done, so I gave him the spare engine I had. It took a month of daily driving before the poor thing finally died!! The other motor is currently being reconditioned.

For those of you who have not seen a Sherpa, pics below :D

Valiants with either of the six cylinder engines. The most nearly maintenance free motor cars I ever operated either as an owner or fleet manager. The slant sixes in particular had a lower overall cost per mile than Holdens and Falcons in spite of a higher purchase price and higher fuel usage. Unfortunately the good ones left are pretty well all in collectors hands.

Been a couple of mentions of the Holden Frontera ( which is an Isuzu of course - so Jap engineered but built in the US ). We had one for a few years. It just "felt" dependable. I sorta miss it. The V6 petrol was thirsty however.

We had a Daihatsu Applause for many years, that thing was amazingly reliable. I loved that little car.

I have had two ripper cars for reliability - '75 RR 2 door, sold with 590,000 k's up and still going beautifully and a Series 3 Jaguar with well over 300,000 k's. Neither ever missed a beat, and neither were given a lazy life.

I have found all Jag and Land Rover products to be fabulous if properly maintained.

85 (?) Daihatsu Charade 5 Speed and Aircon! Great Car Very reliable despite no money spent... not even oil except the odd top up in 2 years
70 something Toyota Crown very noisy timing chain when traded...
85 Jackaroo 2.3 TD 4 Speed great vehicle very reliable over 3 years (just over 85K in that time)
BJ40 SWB replaced alternator, master and slave brake cylinders, clutch and several oither bits, Drove it between Adeliade and Darwin 4 times during a very hot summer. Remember cruising along at about 80 (thats where the temp gauge was happy) being overtaken by commodores etc then half an hour later they would be stopped somewhere with the bonnets up cooling. 10 mins later they would go flying past again.. Died of rust in the chassis but swapped for a Sierra!
88 ish Sierra hardtop, as mentioned above swapped BJ40 for it at a yard as it wasn't driveable, common on these the 4x4 selector had a rubber "ball" to locate it and these break down with the heat, drop and you can't select 4x4 or 4x2 ($50) genuine for a new gear stick. Used a screwdriver to select 4x2 high and drove it for about a week before replacing
TP Magna - After too much teasing from friends swapped for a Lada Niva with fiat (231?) 2 litre twin overhead cam engine. LOVED IT! rebuilt the gearbox (cost about $60 in parts) Drove it off road whenever possible and plenty of highway driving nearly every weekend between Adelaide and Whyalla for over a year) did I mention I loved it???
84 MQ Patrol SWB 3.3 Diesel, Great vehicle but twins on the way it had to go
1990 (ish) 2.8TD Jackaroo, Great vehicle travelled every where and including an NT trip in the wet season. Very reliable and economical.
1994 Disco 300Tdi been good so far... Water pump, alternator and some leaks

Also had 2x Feroza's (great vehicles 1 had a corroded head gasket which I replaced)
1x 85 Rocky 2.8 Diesel, still launches a boat in Cowell most days, great vehicle

And a couple of others.

Most reliable probably was the Jackaroo considering the km's we did in it although the Disco is close as it has done lots of work. probably 40% off road over 90K km's

Hey Ron,
Do I recall seeing the bottom picture in a 4x4 magazine once upon a time.
;);)

Yep. My son, Lee, won a winch with it.

I reviewed his letter, edited it slightly, then rode down to Silverwater (ahh, I still had the CBR1000F at that time) and dropped it in at $WD Monthly's offices on the last day of the comp.

Now I have that winch, still unused, in my garage. I looked at it the other day and thought what am I gunna do with that (I have a Warn winch of my own).

The FJ55 had a winch but it was useless there - it was a PTO winch.

Believe it or not, but this has been one helluva reliable car...

http://img138.imageshack.us/img138/8200/060913alfansquarterdw2.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

The poor Alfa has been sadly neglected since the new Defender arrived, but even after a week or two just sitting there it still starts and runs like a clock. Sum total of breakdowns (not including flat batteries) = three in 15 years of ownership.

A distributor rotor cap burnt out.
Clutch master cylinder dumped its fluid (still driveable)
and last week... wait for it...
Loose battery terminal connection. Only counts as a breakdown since SWMBO was driving and didn't know what was going on so she couldn't fix it herself.

It's now 38 years old and just keeps going and going. Performance to shame many new cars and not bad economy either.

I hate to say it but the two most reliabe cars I ever owned were both Hyundai's an Excel and and a Sonata. The later being a nice car to drive but it had a large "H" on the back :(

Now have a Falcon I wish I had never bought !
Even makes me think I should go get another Sonata :o
Seriously !

What ever you do don't "Trade up" to the BA

Funny you should mention that :)
I was talking to a mechanical shop who did the roadworthy certificates for our local Ford dealer, a few years ago.

He said most AUIII cars came in, got the seal of approval and went back to be sold. A lot of the newer BA models with very low miles, went back with a list of required repairs!!

First I had a 1964 IIA. Bought it when i was 18, and ran it into the ground. never stopped once.

1976 range Rover with a 4.4 leyland in it. That thing just went and went and went. It wa an absolute wreck, all dented and rusty, but it never broke down.

Then I bought a 1978 rangey that had the interior burnt out. Got a new interior, had everything reapholstered, and apart from finding out it had no reverse after we got it going, it never let me down either.... DID a flood story with Channel nine.. Emptied a can of WD 40 under the bonnet and drove with water over the grill and up to windscreen for a whole day and it never even coughed!

Then had a 1982 4 door rangey. It let me down at every oportunity! We had to roll down the range behind Tenterfield..... after blowing the three speed auto out of it. A guy who gave us a lift looked exactly like Ivan Milat. he pulled a huge bag of drugs out of the glove box and tried to sell it to us.

Then 1996 Disco V8... Beautiful machine. Never even looked like breaking down.

02 Disco.... The baby. it just purrs.

Most people who say land rovers are unreliable have neglected them, have thrashed them or have bought one that's got so many K on it you might as well not even bother.

Just my 2c worth.

I had a few Falcons before getting into 4bees
An XW 3.6, XC 4.1 and XD 4.1
the xw and xc were second hand and the xd was brand spankers, I had then for a total of about 14 years, the XD for 10 of those.
I replaces a clutch in the XW and in the XD. Never another issue.

In order my main cars...

1968 S11A Swb - Not too bad. few breakages but mainly my fault
1991 - Peugeot 205 1.9gti - Pretty much faultless over my ownership adn my brothers subsequently - probably 60k miles.
Peugeot 205 GTI 1986 - Very good, burst hose once and gear linkage.. remarkable as it was my work hack, I track dayed it and did about 50k miles in 2 years tharashing it mercilessly!
1993 Lancia Delta Integrale Evo - converted to a race car by me - nearly 400bhp. Amazingly reliable but I rebuilt it every season!
2001 Caterham Superlight R - Race car. Hardly used it and it broke once. Clutch operating fork snapped. 267bhp at 10k rpm! adn 500kgs :o
Peugeot 205 GTI 1989 - again very good....
2001 Defender 90 TD5 - We have had some* problems:angel:
1994 Range Rover Vogue SE Air sprung. - only one issue. new pressure sensor on air tank. very good.

Other cars in the family included an Alfa Romeo 147gta - brand new - no issues at all in 18k miles. (great car)
vectra 1.8 16v - amazing... 220k miles now and still going. only had a head gasket and the throttle potentiometer
300 tdi Disco 1 - Very good again. HEad gasket and couple or water pumps
1982 Range Rover classic. amazingly good. Only issue since we had it was a tight gear change on the auto and a broken choke cable.

Pete

ps.. by some* I mean lots... but mainly they were down to a screw holding the dash on being screwed through the throttle loom... Killed the throttle every time you drove through water.. try finding that with a diagnostics computer;)

pps I like Peugeot 205's

Definately most reliable,

1987 Toyota Camry wagon, had it for 200,000kms, had it offroad (tracks my FL wouldnt enjoy), gave it a flogging, crashed it, drowned it (hydraulic lock), everything. All for the cost of WD40 and oil. Bought it for $350 from an insurance company, sold it for $100 ( at 300,000kms).

Wow some of you have held cars with a huge amount of km's on it. Most Ive gotten to is around 140,000. Don't know if I have been lucky or not but have always had reliable cars. Had quite a few Commodores, from VC to VS, 3 Fords, an AU, current BA XR6 and Territory. At the time a new Merc C180, great handling and ride just not much poke under the bonnet, the D3 had a few warranty issues but never let me down and yet to see with the TD5. Have never owned a jap car, never been my cuppa tea,

Regards

Stevo
