Hey Everyone...i have read and been told that LR Factory OAT coolant eats aluminium and can cause radiators to leak and even eat pin holes in the head (td5) (Sandtoyz had this problem thats where i read it, took ages to eat through apparently) so i was wondering if anyone knows if aftermarket OAT stuff has a taste for aluminium ?? and why the factory stuff does ??
Dont really want to put it in my Td5 if there is a fear of it corroding something.
Cheers Adrian

I thought it was the Non OAT coolant that did the damage to the TD5 radiators/coolant system?
The LR manual and the warning sticker under the bonnet clearly state to use only OAT coolant.

Using non oat causes problems via increased electolisys of the various metals, some parts of the engine act like zinc sacraficial anodes on ships hulls.
Using oat is a cool answer untill you get into the nitty gritty of it... if you get the concentration wrong its either harmfull or more or less useless, if you contamintate it its useless, if you mix it with some of the older coolants it gets serious about the acid part of its job. If you use it in the wrong concentration in the wrong temperature environment it can cause problems, If you use it in an engine that has hat electrolisys begin in it eats it out.
Fun stuff hey....
chances are that something else started the problem and the OAT's killed it.

I use the original Caltex LLC stuff.
300tdi, had it in there since new (it was the one of the last Tdi's off the line) and touch wood everything's OK.
Been running the same stuff in the Patrol for the last four years (had an acid flush before using) and still fine. (aluminium radiator)

You have already seen my other thread about my coolant issues. But someone (forget who) recomended taking the top hose of the radiator and flushing that way to.... Do it, I did it, and found a new pool of old coolant hiding in the radiator. I also changed all those hose clips to normal hose clamps. Be careful with the bottom radiator hose clip, you will pull extend it to get it off the flange, and release it onto the hose and it will pull the hose tight across the flange.

Have used the GMH orange coolant (50:50) in my 1999 RRHSE (same as I always use in my aged but utterly reliable 2000 Commodore 5.7L LS1). Radiator squeaky clean in both vehicles -not a trace of sludge. I mix it with distilled water (bulk 5 litre from Woolies).

if its a TD5 it should be running OAT,,
IF you decide to change it, flush it VERY well.

yer mine is a Td5 and has been running a green coolant of some sort since i have owned it..i was think of changing it to OAT but have herd about the factory stuff eating /corroding radiators and wasnt sure if the aftermarket stuff was any better ?? or if that has a habbit of eating aluminium also..
So should i chage it to OAT ?
Thanks

the V8 (and I would guess td5) manual AND COOLANT TOP UP LID states to use OAT only.
