Electric Brake Controllers

I have a Discovery 3 and am just purchasing a Kimberly Kamper with electric brakes. I was planning on a Prodigy brake controller, but the Kimberly agent reckons a Redarc is better because it needs less adjustment and can me mounted in more positions, but he is not a Land Rover expert so am unsure of his advice for my car. Does anyone have any thoughts?

I'm no expert on comparing but have been using the top sec prodigy with disco and swan outback for a couple of years and all I can say is brilliant. The variable G force type sensor is very accurate so I suspect other units will have the same / similar electronics to complete the job. I did find that it was more about getting a bargain price. There is a wide range of prices and I got a 145 cash price from repco a few years ago on one of their 20 percent flyers whereas some other areas were up to 279 and beyond. Problem is people believe 300 is cheap!

So if the buy price is correct and you can squeese 80 to 100 dollars off then put the money to better wiring loom for the voltage lines to the van.

There is very little adjustment required for the Prodigy.

You do manually adjust the desired voltage applied to the trailer (less for light/empty trailers more for heavy trailers) however that is a good thing and very easy with a thumb wheel while driving.

I don't know the Redarc so can't comment on the ease of fitting, however you would be hard pressed to find a controller that is easier to use and better than the Prodigy.

I have this same question. The general consensus is that the Prodigy is the best on the market. There are, however, some hydraulic control units that it was potentially not compatible with when it first came on the market. One of these was the Carlisle HydraStar that is used on the Kimberley. I'm still looking into this as everything I've read about the Tekonsha Prodigy is very good including the Off-Road aspect. The Redarc, seems to be a good solid basic unit but is in a different league to the Prodigy.

I've just ordered the new tekonsha P3 from the USA via evilbay. Appears to be the same as the old prodigy unit with mucho blingo LCD matrix display. Main reason I wanted this unit as it will fit my overhead console much better with it's outward facing display (as apposed to upward facing) $150au at my door.
