View Full Version : My 1960 SII Ute.

Taking Shonky's advice I have placed some photos here of my recently acquired project.

Whilst I've done a lot of reading and admiring, I finally have convinced myself to jump in the deep end and buy a real landy. I don't know a hellavu lot about older landies so I'll have lot's of questions for all you guru's.

It's a nice 1960 Series II. All the original bits work (except the wipers....sorry wiper.)- got it from a farmer in Lancfield Vic. The FOXTON blinker is a classic. My kids love it (The nob on the end flashes :o).

The motor runs sweeeeeeet and all mechanicals seem to be ok with no strange noises or smoke.

The chassis has rust - mostly in the outriggers but driver side main rail also is bad - I would say I need another chassis but will try and rescue this one to keep it 'riginal. I will know once I strip it. Bulkhead seems ok except a little patch of under drivers windscreen.

So a the moment I am still without driveway as I have got a little out of order with my priorities ;) So the next month or so I will be getting the driveway finished and then I can christen it with a few SII oil stains

Being a newbie to posting I have only worked out how to attach the pictures rather than insert them as larger images....

So I have a couple of months of waiting, spraying penetrating oil, making lists. I'll put some more photos up when I get going.

Also I need a name for the ol' girl so if anyone has any ideas speak up.
(I had thought Kaptain Kaos to match the number plates:rolleyes: )

Repositioned KKS today. Motor running ok but feels like the front left wheel is not rotating too well - proabably just the brakes binding. I'll try not to drive it too much.;)
My list of "to do's" is growing. Itching to get going but must finish driveway first.
More penetrating spray and getting to know the ol' girl better. :)

It's gonna be a helluva job to pull this bugger apart. Underside is coated with an inch of clay and oily bits. Better add a dremel to my xmas list .

Just worked out how to post some bigger pictures so hope this works.

Looks to be a great project. I just sold an almost perfect ser 3 lwb firewall/chassis for $250 to a guy from Lancefield. He only bought it for the front diff. I could chase him up thru ebay if you want. ( A pic of it is in my projects thread).

Also,
The reg is more like mid 1969.
Look at the reg of my first Landie reg in Nov 1969;)

Paul great pics.

The chassis is a bit scary - a chassis swap would be my preference, but if it were the S3 version you would have to have all the S3 ADR spec parts. So I would look around for something closer to its real age.

Replacement door tops are available new - but they are usually S3 types with the hole for the window lock. (The hole is in sort of the same place as the holes in your doortop but smaller with regular shape! :D:D:D )

Keep the pics coming.

Sleepy,

Well done, I saw that vehicle on e-bay IIRC, the engine bay looked in good order with even the spark plug covers still present.

Drive way will help but you might need a bit of cover as well. I have been doing some work on an 80" in the drive and the weather does its best to discourage progress.

All the best with a great project.

Thanks all,

I'm looking forward to ......the challenge. Took the skin of my knuckles today.:o.first of many I bet!!;)

Dismantled a few after market things - fm 2 way and radio. Just cleaning and spraying with penetrating fluid.

I'm surprised how good the vinyl seats are. I'm not an expert but it looks like the original "elephant's hide" finish.:) (Or perhaps just a more recent retrim:p.)

The safety levels in this vehicle is amazing.......ly bad. No seat belts, bad lights, little drum brakes, one wiper...even the seats are only held down with little leather tabs:o. I love it.;)

I have also purchased a 67ish SIIa tray back with no engine.
It has a sound chassis. Wooden tray back and also a Spare ute tub/firewall/seatbox thrown in. (What a bargain.:D:D). I hope to be able to use the door tops, chassis and whatever else I need then place some bits back into circulation.
Unfortunately its was a 6 cyl so the guru's tell me I will need to move the engine mounts.

I also need to find out how a more recent chassis effects it status as a "1960 Model". ie new chassis number.

Slug,

Agree about getting it out of the weather.

Hope to have shelter (carport) soon (3 OR 4 months) with room enough. Probably not as cosy as a garage but I keep spending all my $$$ on land rovers.:blush:

Diana,

Yes the chassis is quite sad. It's mostly the outriggers and rear x member but I'm sure it'll get worse as I do the reveal. Haven't got the donor vehicle home yet but hope to be able to use the IIa's door tops.

More pics soon

Thanks Dejay, I think i'll be right as I have purchased a SIIa 6cyl with a spare bulkhead thrown in. (Hope the spare is a 4 cyl SII - haven't really had a good look yet.) I also hope I will be able to salvage the original firewall as the only rust (that I have found!) is under the drivers windscreen.

I agree with you on the date of the rego. We had a 1969 kingswood in the "K" rego range. But using CALVIN on the ser number on the bulkhead gave me 1960 SII. (Ser 153001102 Eng RMC 22398B ). But, hey, I'm certainly not an expert! Just a punter who reads too many Land Rover mags!!:D:D

Nice colour on your Landie - do you still have it?

Dee Jay

Is the red 109" the one you are talking about?

The first civilian rego may have been 1969 - however that vehicle looks like it was military, so it would have been wearing an Army Rego Number for at least 5 years before 1969.

Paul

It has to be a 1960 Series II in the years up to the Series 2a the year of manufacture is included in the car/chassis number and in your case the "0" after the "153" is the code for 1960. Another hint is the fact that there is no suffix letter which were introduced with the series IIa.

BTW - do you know when/which previous owner fitted the radio and what frequency band it operates? I may know someone who could use it to restore a 1960 Land Rover Fire Engine. (that is of course if you don't want it.)

Don't know a helluva lot about original owner..........yet. I bought KKS from Lancefield farmer who bought it as part of a farm deceased estate auction in Kilmore VIC "a couple of years back".
(I have a box full of gaskets and bits and pieces; some in envelopes addressed to original owner. I'll chase that up.)

Is there a way of finding out the history of a landy by serial/engine numbers alone?

I presume the radio is a VHF radio (based on shorter antenna in roof of about 30cm - too early for UHF) which would suggest it is CFA (Vic Country Fire Authority) which a lot of farmers/cfa volunteers have. Although I’m only guessing - it could be an amateur radio too(144 Mhz?)

I would be happy to pass it on to someone who has a use for it - no idea if it works.

Goodness Paul! I feel a lot better about my chassis now!

Like I said before though it's a great looking truck and I'm sure that it will come out looking as schmick as the day it rolled off the line!

Look forward to seeing it transform!

Yes, I was just pointing out that KKS reg would have been 1969. My red Landie might still be out there. I sold it after 7 years & 150,000 miles. It was a 1958 sigs wagon - 24volt - yuk.

Vacuumed out the dirt on the weekend. I think the farmer who owned KKS was a chicken farmer. Cab was covered in a layer of chook ****!:eek2:
Maybe this was preserving the vehicle?

Over the weekend I unpacked the box of goodies that came with the vehicle to see what I've got:

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2008/04/265.jpg

Don't you just love farmers! New bits ready for when you need them; all the replaced bits kept - just in case. New Gaskets (Gearbox and Rear end, Exhaust,) Brake parts, Indicator and Brake light lenses. Number plate light. Points, Condensers, the list goes on.
Some rather serious pieces of gearbox (Hey I'm an amateur - I don't know their names - but they look new!) It was like xmas

I also unpacked the cabin of other interesting bits.
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2008/04/292.jpg

As an newbie I'm not exactly sure what is original and what is not.

The bits are:

1. Wooden Handle (Jack?)
2. 2 bits of water pipe carefully wrapped in hessian
3. Coach bolt and a flat bracket (??)
4. Spare wheel bracket
5. Jack (Is this authentic? Looks like the one out of our old Kingswood)
6. A piece of rope with small wooden handle (pull start????)
7. Neatly fashioned lump of wood - rounded on one side. (??)
8. Tool with bolt heads bronzed onto each end (??)
9. I know this one - crank handle.
10. Plastic tube (1inch diameter)
11. Wheel brace (I've got the rest of it in the shed)
12. Old beach towel ( :) )
13. Large bolt with square nut on end (Spare wheel ??)
14. Jack Handle

Please let me know what's what.

I also found some interesting chalk notes under the seats.

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2008/04/293.jpg
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2008/04/294.jpg

Lastly I found an envelope dated 1967 addressed to:

M F Chumley (esq.)
Marreba
Sydenham Vic.

Rich farmer? Mmmmmm? More investigating required.:D

Great little collection you have there, it may have been a case of Gunna - bought the bits gunna get around to fitting them one day.

If you were to buy that lot on the bay you would be up for quite a bit of loot.

Looks like the collection I got with mine, still haven't fully sorted mine out. Got 3 milk crates of stuff like gaskets, bearings & little things.
Then there is the wooden box.................

Amazing the stuff that gets collected over the years.

On holidays at the mo....:D:D:D

Spent last week down at Apollo Bay for the Music Festival

Love the Otways - can't believe how green it is down there:o...pity much of the 4wd tracks are now closed:angrylock:

Nonetheless I managed to get the Defender dirty on some back roads:D...not real serious 4wd left but fun all the same - especially after the rain.

This week I am getting ready for driveway....moving rubbish, stacking bricks, wood...geez I keep some cr@p.

I need to make room for donor vehicle (67 SII)....I envy you blokes with more than 1/4 acre block...it's like a Chinese puzzle in my yard at the moment!

Once I get the donor I will dismantle it and start working on the chassis.

Should be here next week, I'll post some more pictures then.

Shonky

Yarr... the closing of tracks is very grr.

I'll give you another 1/4 acre if you give me all your spare bits...?

I envy people who don't have to travel 3 hours to work on their Landys!

Well, despite the best of my intentions I have decided to sell the ute. When Olmate (Troy) listed his series 1 (ol ute) I just couldn't say no. So with only a quater acre block in the burbs I have decided to move the Series 2 on.(Well maybe SWMBO also had some input too :p)
I have thought of breaking it and using some of the bits in the S1 but it's just too complete to pull apart.
So there you go, if you thinking of a good project or perhaps you have a series 2 that needs a few original bits - make me an offer. (All the parts and tools come with the vehicle!)
Don't be too scared by the chassis rust, I reckon outriggers and a rear cross member are the main issues - or maybe just transplant it onto a new chassis.

More info in the markets section. I leave it there for a couple of weeks and then stick it on flea bay.

Well it's time to say Goodbye to Kaptain Kaos my 1960 S2.

Shannon (aka Supermodel) turned up with the right amount of cash and she's now passed on to a new owner.

Started her up again today and I can't get over how original she looks and sounds - running a bit rich but she idles beautifully. Shannon has also taken the donor S2a too so he now has the ingredients of a fine vehicle.

It's kind of sad but, having bought Olute, I was a little bit over-commited.

Now I can concentrate on one landy at a time. (Not counting the Disco and Defender;))

(Although I of like the look of that red S2 satation wagon on fleabay..........I must resist, I must resist!)

Good luck Shannon - make sure you keep us posted!
