Bottle jack???

I have a Defender Td5 110 CSW (2005). The jack I have is the original one, sort of “high lift”.

I wonder if it’s a good idea to buy a bottle jack. Seems it would be convenient and easy to use on flat firm ground (e.g. highway).

Should I buy one, and if so, what capacity, bearing in mind that the vehicle is likely to be fully loaded? A crucial matter that I have doubts about: will the typical bottle jack lift a Defender high enough to be able to change a tyre?

Please advise.

Noting that a bottle jack is usually placed under an axle, it only has to lift the axle an inch or so to get the tyre off the ground.

Where were you intending to place the jack?

the jack youd be after would be the red bottle jack from the disco its a 2 stage hydraulic thats good for 2t and has a curved sadle on it for lifting the axle tube.

You can assume the bottle jack will have to lift the inch or so - plus the difference between a dead flat tyre and the inflated one you are replacing it with. Say a total lift of eight inches.

I have always used one with my 110, which came (second hand) with this rather than the original jack (and never wished I had it in fifteen years). Capacity needs to be at least two tonnes, and you should carry a flat plate to put under it on soft ground. A two stage jack would be more useful, as you get a lower closed height and more lift.
