Anyone have one of these?
Cheap, small, light, solid state. Seems just the ticket for using in the car to run ozexplorer and store a bit of music and my RAVE CD etc.
What do you think?

Don't these only have a 4.5g zip type flash drive built in as the hard drive. Will this be enough to run the O/S other software, oziexplorer, maps, music, etc.
Otherwise why not - but for less than $150 more you can buy a new full on laptop - there are options.

I was looking at one of these just this morning on the web - as my MD needs something simple (to match his PC skills :D:D:D) just to get email etc., when overseas.
I could see it had USB ports - and in the spec it mentioned it was wired network ready but I couldnt see a RJ45 socket
I need to look at one in the flesh - so to speak.

It was mostly the solid state drive that appealled as being durable in a 4WD, but yes I take your point that it is very small and limiting. I thought I'd use a jump drive for whatever I needed to run but that might be asking for trouble too, sticking out the side begging to be knocked.

I've bought and configured two for work as mobile 'puters to access work through 3's mobile broadband.
No problems so far - work a treat. If you don't need Windows (and let's face it *most* of the time it's not actually required to do what we need to do) you are ready to go out of the box - email, web browser, word proc, s/sheet (OpenOffice) etc. If Windows is required to run OziExplorer etc then you can load XP onto it if you have a licence - just check that the hard disk space is adequate and that you can live with a 7" screen.
Not much cheaper than a laptop but much more portable. Yes, they have an Ethernet port.
3 Mobile Broadband works just fine under the Eee's Linux though 3 will deny all knowledge of this and only support Windows and Mac.
Rumour has it that Asus are bringing out a larger screen version with XP preloaded soon(ish). HP and Dell among others have also announced entrants in this small computer market. Depends in how much of a hurry you are.

They also have a tablet model with same size screen - much better for running your oziexplorer in car than a hinged screen laptop.
One of the guys had one on our recent VicHigh Trip - had 80Gb memory and was running oziexplorer with Hema, Rooftop, Topo and RFS maps. Worked a treat and IMHO was just the right size screen for in car nav.
Not sure of price though - any info on this model Incisor?
Pics attached.

Ahh. Now that's what I need, Roger. I had been looking at getting a 7" VGA touch screen for my laptop but the Asus may be the way to go.
Is it the Asus R2 with in-built GPS

I have been thinking of buying one for a while however there is a 9" screen model coming with a 20gig solid drive for around $650.00 There is a few being advertised on Ebay selling out of Hong Kong at present. I would wait until the new model arrives.

how funny
i was looking at these last night as i had an email sebt through from shopping square think it was a smidge under 500 i think
i thought they looked ok and i too liked the idea of the solid state drive......i suppose you might be able to put an external drive on if space was an issue
but if they take off just hang around because they will only get better and better.......
i dont know how correct this is but solid state drives are still extremely expemsive per gig hence why sony's top range viao laptop with the (30g i think) solid state is over 3000 dollars

i have one for about 6 weeks.i bought it with the idea of gps.no matter how hard i tried i could not work out the linux system.i am sure more computer literate people will have no trouble.i have just today loaded xp onto it as well as the free open office word processing program and together they have taken up about half of the drivespace.it is a cut down version of xp that loads in about 25 seconds from the time power is turned on.mine cost $470 from a local electrical store.it runs an external hard drive and external dvd burner as well as my you beaut speaker system,i will try to load oziexplorer on through the week to see how it works.

The review (see link I posted on page 1) says this not very flattering statement:
The name of the game with the R2H is obviously not performance, the talk should focus more on usability and portability for this device. Unfortunately, it is important to talk about the fairly dire performance you'll tend to get from the R2H. The Celeron M 900MHz processor is just a drag, a Pentium M low voltage processor would have been so much better. Frequently there is lots of lag when using even basic applications or navigating menus. You can watch the screen redraw itself at times. Sometimes when inputting text with the stylus and poking the on screen keyboard you'll tap a letter and it'll register a couple of seconds later. You really have to make sure to stop as many background processes as possible, free up memory and don't run multiple applications at once to make a single program usable. Having said that, Asus included a bunch of software utilities that run in the background, aggravating and stealing resources from an already power starved processor. The very poor processor and overall performance really sinks the usability of this device.

The review (see link I posted on page 1) says this not very flattering statement:
There are good reasons, apart from cost, why the original Eee did not use XP - compared to the Linux system used originally, XP is very resource hungry.
The whole concept of the Eee is that for a lot of uses, you simply do not need either XP nor the other bloated software that it runs, nor the high powered processor that they demand. And if you do not need these, why have them?
Of course, there will be applications where XP really is necessary, and you will need the extra power. But a faster processor means more power consumption, which means either less battery life or a bigger battery, meaning less portability.

If you think of it as a better PDA, rather than a smaller laptop, it looks a lot more appealing.
Can the linux ones install windows programs straight up or do they need something like WINE?
